Doom 1 remake maps by me

Recommended Posts

I decided to recreate a few Doom 1 maps. So here they are. Hope you enjoy them. Maybe some more in the future. You can also request a specific level.

IWAD doom.wad. Tested in GZDoom. Only ultra-violence configured.

The levels are slightly larger and harder than the original ones.

It's possible I played an older version.

I think you played the right version, buddy. Thanks for the video!

I also played the wad and I recommend you renaming it to "E1M1_remake.wad", since Zdoom (and other games) can't deal that well with spaces in filenames.

That being said: although I applaud the effort, I find that the map was not to my liking. For starters I feel that the map it too big and though it (may) work for seasoned players, as a re-imagined introduction map it's a bit overwhelming. The strength of the original E1M1 was that the size was large enough for new and inexperienced players yet small enough for seasoned players.

When I look at the way you used and applied the textures, I feel that it is somewhat lacking. The original E1M1 had a wider palette in both textures and colour by the way it used various textures & light levels and that is something I do feel missing in your level. It's all so grey and dark :/

As for the monsters, right out of the bat you introduce the pinky demon, the baron of hell and the cacodemon. If I compare it to the original game, many of them were introduced later in the episode, one even in the episode that followed which had a more natural progression. I also believe that the pinky demon and the cacodemon were introduced way too soon in the map.

I also believe that you introduce too many of Doom's interactive mechanics, such as lifts, monsters emerging from hidden compartments and monsters teleporting in (in my playthough, a baron popped near the blue key), the radiation suit to enter large section of nukage, all in quite quick succession of each other. For new players it may be a bit overwhelming, seasoned players can take a punch but with every other re-imagined or remade E1M1, I tend to look at those maps as a first introduction to the game, as I did with yours . . .

Just finished E1M1 (I will check the others later) and I had a good time. Love the concept of retaking the original maps and give them more spaces and different mechanics.

Nice so far !

  • 3 weeks later...

it could be cool to do a megawad that is just a remake of doom 1 and/or doom 2

the levels look very cool

Thank you, @CBM!

I find it a cool idea and all, but I also wonder who'd play 32 Doom II maps reimagined by some random dude like me when the same people don't even play original and unique maps made by me? Anyway, thanks again.

true

however, people seem to like the ones you already (re-)made and making levels that are remixes are fun

Also there are CPs that remade the entirety of doom 1 and people seemed to like it, same with doom 2 IIRC

I once did a E1M1 remake that had bits of Doom E1M1, Doom 2 MAP01, FreeDOOM E1M1 and FreeDOOM MAP01... It was really fun (I just copy-pasted parts of the actual levels together and made it work as a single level)...

But that idea would also work in a reimagined edition, where each bit is remade instead and I think it would work for 32 levels

I started to make maps because I always wanted to, and just recently got the opportunity to do so. I'd love to recreate all Doom commercial maps tbh. Make them even more enjoyable yet nostalgic.

But on the other hand, seeing that my megawad Astroverse - which I put a lot of effort on, including compatibility and custom additions - does not get much people to play it makes me don't feel like re-building maps that already exist just to get the same results - three or four people play it and that's it. I think there are some very unique maps in there that it could offer a memorable experience to people who play it thoroughly.

Anyway, I stated here I could accept suggestions on the levels to be remade by me. You can be the first one to request a map :) maybe this thread goes a long way to the point nearly all slots are requested and the "megawad" is done.
