Doom Mandela Effect

I was reading through the "Things you Just learned about Doom" Thread and I read about some Mandela Effect moments.

The Mandela effect is when a large group of people misremember something.

For example alot of people remember the maze section in e1m6 having a sky as a ceiling, but its a normal ceiling.

I want to know if there are more examples of the Mandela effect for anything doom.

In E1M4, some (including me) always remember the central area with the blue key having a sky.

Interesting thing about this is that the Jaguar version of the map actually has a sky, so there you go.

What's up with people remembering a sky texture where one isn't? There was a guy I saw a while back who thought for the longest time that Doom II map 12's cyberdemon room had a dark blue starry sky

Edit: Map 10, not 12.

I never played Jag Doom, and yet I also wasn’t sure if that area had a sky or not.. Sitting there pondering over details like this is why I had to hand it off to you for the “from memory” project!

Map12 doesn’t even have a Cyberdemon, let alone a dedicated room with starry sky!

Well here's Jaguar's E1M4 central area just to confirm ;)

Given that there's been so many different ports of Doom on numerous different platforms, it wouldn't surprise me to see a "Mandela Effect" just be some case of thinking something was in the PC version but really it was in some console port, which seemingly has already happened here

Here is another one I just found

That actually makes sense. Initially I was like "No, it's holding one gun and his other hand is grabbed by the demon".

But I have forgotten, the exact same marine with the same pose and different background, holding also a shotgun is actually the title menu.

So it's two images that are similar in pose, in one it's true, the other not.

Haven't found any mandela effect to convince me. I was hoping for something I am very familiar with, to shock my brain. But even Doom, most of them are like "yeah, I remember that could be a ceiling but it could also not be, it's higher up it makes sense to be a ceiling but I don't know for sure".

The gun thing was cool though. Somehow I entered the Doom menu and never noticed the marine pose is the same as the box, I haven't connected the dots. I was just looking at menu options or jumping forward into the game without noticing too much. At one point I was like, "wait was there a marine in the title menu? I thought it was just hellish background and the menu". Your mind plays tricks.

I always remembered it having a ceiling. I was actually playing PSX Doom CE yesterday and that area having a sky stuck out like a sore thumb to me.

Way back when, I always remembered Plutonia's final map having a sky that was fleshy-looking but gray/beige in color. Turns out the sky was still fleshy-looking but it was red instead.

I do a similar "imagine there's sky when there's none" thing for MAP09's starting room. I went like a full decade before realizing the lift pit is indoors.

I thought for the longest time that Doom II had a shareware version that was like the first 9 or 10 levels or something, but only after rewatching LGR's Doom II retrospective it occurred to me that it was only released as a full game.

This is understandable since even back in the 90s very few people had ever seen the box art. The title screen shows him with 2 guns.

Not quite the same thing, but every time I play Wolfenstein 3D Episode 1 Floor 1 or a game that recreates the level I keep expecting the Doom II secret area to be there, or at least some other easter egg in the same place, and it's always a dead-end.

Not to mention the demon's fireball in the boxart looks a lot like a muzzleflash at a glance

It also sort of looks like he's pinching it between his thumb and forefinger.

I think it's also entirely possible that people are getting it mixed up with the cover for Duke 3D:

I'm sure I've had some here and there but none really come to mind; but I did have a reverse-Mandela like effect for quite a while. For the longest time I was absolutely convinced that there was a swastika in E1M4 when I first played it on the shareware version. However when I finally got Ultimate Doom a few years later, there was no swastika. It bugged me for the longest time, wondering if I was remembering wrong. Well, years later I finally decided to look it up, and realized that the swastika was removed in v 1.4.

It does exist in the console/Mac version, which I assume the Doom 2 secret is a reference to.  On the other hand the extra/moved secret in MAP32 has no analog so could also just be a coincidence that was put in the same place.

I remember the blue carpet in e1m1 being water and the player starting up the stairs

Of course now I know better but I remember my first time playing it that way

I remember map29s music being getting to tense

I remember there being 31 normal levels

My main misrememberance being that deep into the code was in episode 1

I played Doom a lot in the 90s, but didn't touch it again for over a decade. When I first played a modern official port of the game and saw the "pill" medkit design, I was like "I'M SURE THAT USED TO BE A RED CROSS... RIGHT?!" But I honestly wasn't sure until I looked it up. To a lesser extent, I had the same reaction when I found a secret and it flashed up a notification/played a sound. (To date, I turn that feature off in source ports because it feels wrong to me.)

Tangentially related: I had a Mandela moment in Duke3D just recently... I was so sure the strippers showed actual nudity and that it was only the censored version that gave them orange tassels. I remember it being a big controversy in the 90s. But nope, the tassels have been there from the start.

I remember the inside of the two Baron rooms in E1M8 having those hanged, cut in half corpse textures.

I also remember the red key room in E1M2 being similarly bloody.

When I got back into Doomin' about 10 years ago I made it a mission to take a real deep dive on the classic games and root out ALL the misremembered stuff that haunted the back of my mind, by seriously studying all the maps and hitting sites like Doom Wikia, The Other Doom Wikia (don't judge me) and this very site.  I wanted to have all the levels of Ultimate Doom, Doom II and Final Doom locked in my head with any questions about them definitively answered.  And then I got into Maximum Doom, but that's another story...

So I have no Mandela effect these days (and what does that term actually mean, by the way?  Did people used to think that Nelson Mandela had a hand in developing Doom or something?)

It means when a group of people share the same false memory. It got its name after the shared false memory people had of Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 80s, even though he didn't die until 2013

Should've called it the Vanilla Ice effect then - I could've sworn HE died ages ago, I couldn't believe it when he put out another album like last year

My Doom False memories that linger my head would be like

- baron of hell appearing early in the secret level E1M9 being one of the demons that teleport from the red star after you walk over it to pick up the rocket launcher

- the dark area where you get the plasma in E2M1 being much much larger

- there being lava in E2M1

- TNT Map21 Administration Center having a night space sky, Infact I seem to remember a lot more TNT maps having the night space sky in general

- There being a completely different 5th episode of Doom before Sigil was a thing, that had a orange-green techbase like theme
