a new megawad by Lubba - and maybe you!

hey doomworld!

 

that title was pretentious lol. anyways, I'm working on a new megawad, called UNTO THE DIRT. the theme of the wad is descending into the earth, looking for a way out, but only going deeper into the demonic caverns.

 

the wad is far from finished, and before I get started on making more maps for it, I was wondering if there is anyone here that would like to submit a map to it. I'm not asking to make a community project, I'm just wondering if anyone has any underground maps that they'd want to submit for fun.

with that out of the way, here are some details and requirements about the gameplay of the wad. if I'm missing anything, please point something out in the replies.

 

THE BASICS:

primary source port: Boom v2.02

IWAD: doom2

 

WHAT TO INCLUDE:

multiple difficulties: yes

new sounds: no

new music: yes

new textures: yes

new monsters: no, but I've retextured the nazi as a dead doomguy, so if you want to use him in combat you can. he is virtually the same aside from the reskin.

dehacked: no

demos: yes, if you want to

 

GAMEPLAY:

keep the map difficulty at a medium range under UV

must be playable in vanilla ports. if you can't check if it's compatible, I'll test it for you

maps must be minimum 2min maximum 30min

hide secrets

no slaughter, but big arenas are fine. (keep the map from being BFG spam)

boss fights are a maybe, you can do one as long as its not icon of sin

single player: yes

co-op: yes

deathmatch: yes, but don't prioritize it

 

BUILD INFO:

specify map builder if necessary (if you need help)

specify known bugs

specify whether or not your map is in another WAD (if you made a map for [insert community project] I will not accept)

make your own maps, so don't take from other wads and reskin them for this wad.

have fun!

credit yourself in a .txt file

(optional, but if you want to go into greater detail as to how your map was made, use this template https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Doom_file_template)

submissions will end by November 11th, 2021 (remembrance day in Canada) I will keep updating this thread when necessary, and I'll respond to your comments/emails when I see them. 

 

if no one wants to contribute, thats cool! at least I'll know it'll be a standalone effort. have a great day, and happy dooming!

Alright so I've updated my post. hopefully I've made sufficient additions for people to see if they want to contribute or not. the pinned threads on this forum are also very helpful lol.

I have a lot of Doom stuff I'm working on lately, so sllt me down for a MAYBE. I hate to be that way, but I don't know if I can fully commit.

Ah, damn me! Another interesting community project!

Actually, i have a cavernous map made for the 96 kb challenge that i left unfinished, maybe it can have it's new home here...

 

Yes, this means sign me up for this.

 

Just a question: You said that this project have new graphics used, is there a texture wad that needs to be used or we bring our own textures? (Like CC4-TEX or OTEX for example)

great question! I have no particular texture pack in mind, personally I'm just using stock doom2 assets and maybe a carpet that I'll make soon. add what you want to your map, but don't go too crazy and bloat the file size beyond what you need. hopefully this helps, but if you have more questions feel free to ask!

I have some time to kill, might make a map for it.

 

Does it have to be a specific topic for a cave? Like lava-caves or like map 26 from Doom 2?

feel free to make it unique, I'm not just looking for generic caves because that gets old really quickly. for some ideas of the top of my head, I'd say think of cave cities or overgrown caverns. don't have to make those, just ideas. hope this helps!

Does this have some time limit? I like natural areas, so might wanna make something ...

 

EDIT: Come think of it, I do have an underground map/base, but would it be a problem if I released it separately later as a part of my own MegaWad? What does DW community think of this practice?

there is a time limit, at the bottom of the post. November 11th is the due date. take as much time as you need otherwise!

and if you want to release that map in a future megawad be my guest. it'll be cool to have a first version debut as a guest map! I'm not sure what anyone else thinks of this practice, but as long as you made the map and it debuts here then its valid. hope this clears things up!

Do you have a playtime range / limit in mind? Like 5/15 minutes for completion or more / less?

maximum playtime 30 minutes, preferable playtime 10 minutes. great question!

May I ask is the undead marine the same as the Nazi or is it something unique attack-wise?

And what do you mean by 'stolen material'? Whole maps? Enemy placement? Level names? Midis? Visuals inside levels? I want to sample some of Going Downs visuals (Mainly maps 28 visuals) and 'stolen matrial' is a bit too spongy of a defenition for me.

 

Not to pump flak against your project, but please explain some of these rules and aspects! Misunderstanding in a wad project with multiple map makers is fatal for a wad!

I think by stolen material he means don't just copy and paste Entryway and change a few textures, make your own "from-scratch" project

Wouldn't you think it would be better if he provided some examples?

 

A simple sentence like 'i.e. don't copy map XY and change a few textures' is enough for everyone to understand what he means by 'stolen material'. Guessing rules should not be an option for a map maker or project leader in the first place!

 

There is a reason why they say communication is key.

these are very valuable points! like what xdude said, I just mean make your own maps, I do not care if you "steal" textures and music from other wads. and as for the nazis, they are literally the same, just retextured. I will continue to edit my post with these answers, hope this clears things up in the meantime

wow. that was incredible! thank you so much for this submission! sorry it's taken me so long to return to this thread, schools been busy for me as well.

 

my only feedback is that the yellow key is obtainable without lowering/getting onto the pedestal, which I don't know if you want that fixed or not. you have to really ram into the pedestal to get the key, though. otherwise your map is fun, moody, and total eye candy. again, thank you for your submission! I will be uploading a demo version of the WAD soon, possibly this weekend, so hopefully I can get some feedback on what I've created too.

Shouldn't be that big of a problem to fix. I have nothing important to do until for a day and can easily fix the issue.

I fixed the issues you brought up as well as some other ones that I found while refining the map. Also thanks for the compliments! I should have mentioned that in my last post but social skills are a bit of a challenge for me

perfect, good fixes. also no need to worry about your social skills here bro, I'm pretty socially inept myself sometimes, and I always forget to mention things in my posts lol. but yeah your map is a masterpiece, and you've fixed all of the bugs I could find. if you want to submit another map, let me know, but otherwise thank you and have a great rest of your day :D
