Sergeant G Posted October 24, 2021 I only got into metal during grad school, 2008-2010. And whoa did I get into it. I was older than the undergrads at that point, there weren't many people to hang out with and the professors weren't crazy about me. Everything was manifestly wussy, and proudly so. So for three years metal was really all I listened to. Hard Rock, 80's, Progressive, NWOBHM, Swedish Technical Death Metal, Norwegian Black, Operatic, Thrash.....................if it was published metal by that point I'd probably listened to it or heard of it. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Yeah before grad school I was into a lot of Industrial and Electronica. Metal is often more melodic and complicated to play, imho, at least part of the time. Not ripping on industrial, but I very quickly realized that I was coming across as just slightly less nuts at metal concerts than at industrial shows. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

act Posted October 29, 2021 For me, it was Call of Duty: Black Ops 3's trailer for the map Gorod Krovi; it had some Motorhead playing in the background as you had 4 guys falling out of a deus-ex machina portal. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
kalaeth Posted November 3, 2021 many many moons ago, a friend showed me this song on its Walkman (I did say it was many years ago) : when it ended I asked him what it was and he said "well , this is Manowar, the play metal" and I replied "then I like Manowar and I like metal." After that it was a slow discovery at first, faster when the Internet allowed for it and now I'm pretty much always listening to metal of one kind of another. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Coopersville Posted November 4, 2021 My parents and uncles always had stuff like AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, and Black Sabbath playing in the background since I was a baby; I was born in it, molded by it. I remember some older kid showing me Green Jellö when I was like six, and thinking it was pretty funny how a band was making metal songs about toys, cereal, and childrens fables that I liked. I wasn't very interested in music before I was a teenager though, and didn't get back into metal until Napster came out. Linkin Park's "Hybrid Theory" was the first CD that I owned, followed by Korn's "Life is Peachy". I discovered my favourite band, Iced Earth, through an AMV I found on some fansite back in like 2001. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
