Rudolph Posted September 30, 2021 (edited) So I only recently found about Heretic II, which was honestly a surprised to me, as for the longest time, I was convinced that Hexen was the real sequel to Heretic. However, much to my dismay, Heretic II is not a first-person shooter, but apparently a Tomb Raider clone - which I do not care much for. I tried looking up to see if there have been attempts to remake/demake Heretic II as a Heretic PWAD, but I did not find anything. Is that because people simply do not care enough about Heretic II to do so or is it because to remake Heretic II as a FPS would be akin of making a whole new game? Walter confetti Posted September 30, 2021 Well, a Heretic 2 texture pack exist on Realm 667 so... Some people can try doing it. I know a very little of the levels in the game expect what was shown on the Civvie11 review of the game, plus some cutscenes from the game. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Asphalt Posted October 1, 2021 (edited) Basically I think it would be impossible. 100% impossible to make it vanilla compatible, no question. Heretic 2 was a completely different game, focusing a lot more on the platforming than on the shooter elements. There was a completely 3D world with multiple different overlapping planes that as far as I know would be not feasible to replicate on the Doom engine. The combat was hack and slash for the most part, with multiple moves, combos and acrobatics which I think would suck from a first-person perspective. Then there was a lot of climbing, swimming, cartwheeling, even a special pole jumping maneuver with the staff... and all of those things would definitely not work well into an old school FPS like the original game. Maybe the maps could be "adapted" in some ways, but I think it would take a lot of trimming, and result in a watered down compromise of both games.
