Came here originally cause I was just about to get into speedrunning and fan made doom wads, so first place I went to and noticed was the Speed Demos forum.

I found people on here to be extremely rude at the time so I left for a while. These days this place is ALOT less toxic than it used to be.

Well, one of the earliest things I noticed was ACE Engine (Arbitrary Code Execution in Doom) which went on to tell me that this community has a lot of very talented people.

I remember checking out the forums but not talking to anyone. I got into this forum in like May 2021, just checking around in February lol

When I joined it was only to ask questions about maps and editing, so I just zeroed in on that. I later remember making a very embarrassing post complimenting esselfortium's music, not knowing who they were or who anybody was really, and getting dog-piled for it. Then joining one of many fights about Brutal Doom, and finally signing up for a midi project while still learning how to do it. Then I left for a long time, only returning occasionally to browse for new maps people made and to read post hell.

 

It was awesome.

I first registered on my old account in I think 2001? Somewhere around then. So the first thing I noticed was probably "yep, this sure is a forum about Doom". The place could be rather less... civilised back then. Didn't post much compared to some others. Disappeared around 2007 though I occasionally stuck my head in out of nostalgia. Came back in 2019 when I noticed someone posting about Caverns of Darkness in the Eternity forum. Registered a new account cause I could not for the life of me remember my old password. Stuck around and found that on the whole this is definitely a rare bastion of relative sanity in the online world now, so decided to stick around more and make a nuisance of myself.

Wow... People still play Doom. Thought they'd all be concentrating on Half-Life, Quake 3, UT, what have you.

 

20 years later, people are still playing Doom. And not just playing, but constantly making new content for it, expanding it, and new generations are coming in.

 

It's kind of neat.
