Guardsoul Posted October 5, 2021 Not the first map I made but probably the 3rd/4th back in 2011 (super shitty quality image, I had to take a screenshot from a video since I no longer have that map) Newest map in progress: 26 Quote Share this post Link to post
SilverMiner Posted October 5, 2021 (edited) I'm showing not my first and not the latest maps cuz the first one is pretty boring, and the latest one is built not quite the way I'd like it to be. So the first one could be my second ever map using map07special it's around or more than 8 years old and it was intended to be map20 in a 79 level Zdoom megawad. I remember it used sky4 from Ultimate Doom in its first iteration but I had switched it to hexen boggy sky and I dunno why. Spoiler Here's a screen from my third "magnum opus" (Prboom+ and Zdoom compatible map, not sure about GZ) EDIT: I was wrong with build time, the sketch was made in 20s of November and the map finished on 2 dec. Still fast Edited October 5, 2021 by SilverMiner 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Velvetic Posted October 5, 2021 This is the oldest screenshot I could find, from 2013. And this one is my most recent. 13 Quote Share this post Link to post

DMPhobos Posted October 6, 2021 Here's my very first map, before doing this one i used to edit other existing maps, (you can play it here and watch how it barely works at all) Spoiler Here's the last map i completed, (you can download it here if you want to try it out) Spoiler As a bonus not so long ago i remade my first map, which i interpreted as a first map in a doom 2 set, screens are from the same areas (download here) Spoiler 10 Quote Share this post Link to post

MFG38 Posted October 7, 2021 Funnily enough, I did a stream last weekend where I played through (almost) every released wad I've made during my Doom mapping "career". Eight and a half hours' worth of map to play through in a single sitting. There's a small chance that I talked a lot about the more... questionable design choices that were made back in the day. @Insane_Gazebo even dropped by the stream and commented at one point that I seemed to be a big detailer in my early days. I admittedly was, that is when I actually learned what detail was and how I could add it to my maps. That's one thing that stuck with me over the years - I love shoving detail into my maps, almost to the point of being extravagant rather than tasteful. :P I don't know if I've ever talked about this in other threads, but with my mapping history spanning almost 13 years at this point, I feel sort of bad about how little I feel my maps have improved. You do see the occasional attempt at exploring a new gameplay concept or style of layout, but there was never any conscious will to learn from those experiments and adapt those learnings to my later works. Not up until very recently anyway. It was only when I started working on Gomorrah that I consciously and actively sought to break out of those bad mapping habits I'd developed at that point. Which is also why I've taken it upon myself to join (and host) community projects lately, because I find that the extra perspective brought by other people's feedback is helping me more than personal experimentation ever did in the long run. Anyway, enough rambling. Here are editor screenshots of an old and recent map of mine (should be obvious which is which): Spoiler 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Apprentice Posted October 7, 2021 One of my first and very much unreleased maps: Yes, it's a doomed version of the Millennium Falcon-ish, made a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away . . . The following was a concept that I devised years ago ... ... that I altered into this: Taken from my upcoming Doom multiplayer map. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Astronomical Posted October 8, 2021 I think it's interesting to see how a majority of the maps, while more detailed in their own right, tend to use more (most likely gzdoom) features. I've only been seriously mapping since may but I might as well throw my hat into the ring. The first map I ever made that wasn't a test Spoiler Spoiler 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Archanhell Posted October 8, 2021 I sadly do not have the screenshots at hand, however, you can check my "Entering the Impending Chaos" thread for the first map, and https://www.doomworld.com/forum/post/2374166 this for the last one. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

War.wad, circa 1995: Spoiler Actually I think my only backup of this was saved to a hardrive that's now sadly dead, but this is an accurate reconstruction. I think the only difference is that I probably had a lot of bodies strewn around the floor to imply they'd been fighting for some time already. And judging by my attempt to play this just now probably a bunch of medikits around the "arena" as well. Neoplasm, 2021: Spoiler 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Stupid Bunny Posted October 8, 2021 From my first set of maps, make sometime around 2006 I think Spoiler Screenshots you've probably all seen by now of the last map I actually worked on (I started it in 2010, but most of it was done earlier this year) Spoiler The moral of the story is, my maps 15 years ago were shit but at least I finished more than one a decade 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Phobus Posted October 8, 2021 I read the title as “The first screenshot you took versus the last one you took of your maps” and did a bit of Googling. Turns out, back in 2005, my first publicly posted screenshot was a map editor shot of Warpzone, posted on the ZDoom forums. Way more impressive than the 6-10 hour maps I’m churning out for NaNoWADMo… So I’d actually look like I’ve gone backwards! Comparing a view of my earliest available map to one of the aforementioned NaNoWADMo efforts would be a lot more flattering, but far from impressive compared to what people are posting here. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Bauul Posted October 9, 2021 Looking back through my Imgur account, I found this screenshot of my first map, circa 2016. Not only is it a pretty basic limit-removing map, but for some god-forsaken reason I clearly though Risen3D was the best source port for taking screenshots. So please enjoy this in all its weird texture-filtered glory! By comparison, the latest thing I made is also a corridor, so it makes for a nice comparison point. It's for this. 6 Quote Share this post Link to post

Tristan Posted October 9, 2021 This is from my second map, but close enough. October 2012 Spoiler Bonus shot: rebuild of the same area from 2015 Spoiler I'm more or less completely done with mapping these days, once in a blue moon I'll fire up UDB to try making some dumb gimmick but my last serious attempt at a map was in 2019, after Eviternity I was going to make my own WAD using OTEX, it would have had remakes of some of my old maps and some that I never finished. I did, as always, post a single screenshot before abandoning the project though: Spoiler 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
