Playing through Punish2.wad 28 years after making it

Hey Dario great to see you on Doomworld. I actually just finished Memento Mori and thought your map (map24) on that was one of the highlights, if you can remember that one.

Fun video to watch. Your Plutonia maps were a big influence on me and are still an inspiration for me to make maps today. Cheers!

A lot of members of the original Team TNT are coming back lately.
Its such a joy that i can't express properly how i feel to have one of the most beloved designers of Doom maps here with us :)
Its a great to see you well, @DCasali!

Yes, we need more Plutonia/Urania-likes.

Benjogami is making a vanilla compatible slaughter set... but i been told it isn't :/

Dunno if it's you, but what are you doing in Valve?

He was one of the devs of HL: Alyx, I guess he is part of the mapdev team as usual, as it was since the first Half Life.

Hello Mr. Casali. You don't know me, but your work in the Half Life and Team Fortress franchises, and your design on Plutonia, TNT, and Requiem have influenced and inspired me for years. Your work has touched me in a multitude of ways, and this may seem silly, but I just want to say thank you. Welcome back. I'd love to see more work from you or your brother. Maybe some other TNT members or Valve designers can make some wads. Who knows? Probably wishful thinking. What are our thoughts on the advanced level editors nowadays?

Welcome back Dario! I don't know how you found the time to post here (I know Milo's basically a Ubi Soft design monkey at this point, I've read NOTHING about his involvement with Far Cry for instance) but it's nice of you to drop by!

Holy shit, glad I checked this thread.

I want you to know that your work was very influential to me. I know you caught a lot of flak for wow.wad, but you really upped your game with DOOM: Rampage Edition. That was a truly heroic redemption. You'll always be a legend to me <3.

Good fun watching you swear yourself through this wad. Certainly wouldn't have made a lot of my maps if it weren't for Plutonia and Go2It! Cool to see you back in the community again :D

We get at least one Plutonia derivative a year, right now there’s a community project going on in the same vein, “Plutonia Revisited Community Project 2.” Not to mention Cydonia,  a wonderful Plutonic set that released this year, as well as the upcoming Plutonia 3. I don’t think anyone should be starving for Plutonia esque mapsets.

That being said, it’s really cool to see a Casali on the forum, I wonder what he thinks of the vast array of Plutonia derivatives and sequels the community has cooked up over the years.

It's often said that everybody comes back to Doom... It seems that get proved steadily more true with time! What a way to return, too!

Now we wait for the inevitable Eric Alm return

I think if I came back to Doom mapping I'd revisit the 90's style and scale of maps but who knows?

I know there's no guaranteed anything from this sentence, but I would love to play maps from you.

Plutonia is the only 10/10 WAD in my mind as its special influence. Not only Map32 is a prototype of slaughtermaps, but it also spawned a lot of this style of maps using Map01 segments to form a map as a super secret level. Usually I'll play Plutonia during my birthday to feel the joy of it :p

Personally I think compact challenging (well, maybe not very challenging in modern standards, but still) levels like Plutonia are still very favorable among the community despite the tool allowing mappers to produce huge adventure maps, or highly detailed open area maps. I personally would prefer playing shorter maps (IGT less than 20min) as I don't really like stop in the middle, and it's easier to get back into it after a short break or saving it for tomorrow.

Thanks for creating Plutonia! Your knowledge of Doom theory is very impressive and it has inspired me to understand the game more. Hopefully we get more content from you in the future. Lots of people would be thrilled to play it, I'm sure.

Dusty_Rhodes: "What are our thoughts on the advanced level editors nowadays?" - Firstly thanks, I appreciate what you said about my brother's and my work. I haven't loaded up the editor, but I looked at a couple of YouTube videos and they look like they've come a long way. Also, we can make HUGE maps now with basically no limits. I think if I came back to Doom mapping I'd revisit the 90's style and scale of maps but who knows?

I'd love to see something like Map31 of TNT, I think it's commonly forgotten that you and your brother made some excellent maps for that wad as well. Maybe TNT is overshadowed by Plutonia, since Plutonia is much more straight forward, and arguably more consistent in quality. TNT, as much as I enjoy it, had some real stinkers near the end. Nowadays, that secret map from TNT is considered the start of the adventure mapping style, who knows if we'd have Epic 1 and 2, Eternal Doom, Phocas Island, Earth, Grove, or the many other great adventure wads without it. So, it would be great to see one of the creators of the genre (whether you know it or not, pyramids made a big impact on Doom fans :) go back to that style, whether it be limit removing or Boom or MBF.

Also, unrelated, but have you seen the Casali Construction signs that are in some of the TF2 maps? Always thought it was rather funny, since I recognized your name from Final Doom and Half Life. Did you make those or was it someone else?

Yep, that sign was made for Goldrush, my first TF2 map. I put it in all the others I built.

Speaking of Valve games, which parts/levels of HL1 did you make? Just wondering.
