Do you guys know a good horror movie?

Recommended Posts

I plan to watch with my friends a horror movie at 31st October to celebrate Halloween. But the problem is that I don't know a good movie so I want to hear your suggestions. Send a trailer of a horror movie that you like and I'll choose one, happy Spooktober btw :D

-Seconding 'The Babadook'
Its more psychological horror than anything out there.
And probably the best out there of the genre.

-Hereditary is also good. Toni Collette acting is outstanding for sure.
Midsommar by the same director is also good, not as good as Hereditary, but it shines for moments.

-The Wailing, a korean horror film.

At first is seems like a joke, but it gradually evolves into a terrifying experience of outstanding proportions.

The best horror film i saw in quite a while.

Then the classics that are still marevelous.
-Jacob's Ladder.

The inspiration for many films and games to come, especially the whole Silent Hill Serie.

-The Wicker Man Director's Cut.

Mistery meets Twin Peaks meets phallic centric rural town meets some of the best acting of the time.

Those are my top 5, probably if i am not forgetting something.

The question is what is a "good" horror movie? I myself am pretty easily scared so when I watched Nightcrawler I pissed my pants even though it's nowhere near a horror movie. On the other hand the Purge 2 was quite funny I dunno. So do you want to be spooked or just laugh, I thoroughly enjoyed the Night of the Living Dead (1968), I almost laughed. But then the scene with the trowel came. Ohh, brr. So overall not a scary movie, but I enjoyed it. (Once again, I don't really like horror movies.)

Can't go wrong with Antonio Fulci's 'Zombi'

(it's hard to find a decent trailer but this one does it justice)

John Carpenter's "Halloween", not the Rob Zombie remake or the 2018 semi-reboot.

George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead.

The Last of UsThe Girl With All The Gifts.

Jordan Peele's "Get Out" and "Us".

A Quiet Place I & II are masterclasses in using sound design to create genuine tension, plus protagonists that are incredibly strong, relatable, and badass.

The film that scared me the most was probably The Descent, especially if you are claustrophobic.

The best horror film I ever saw, in terms of pacing, atmosphere and just a thoroughly well crafted story, is the The Orphanage (aka El orfanato). Probably the best straight-up haunted house type ghost story I've ever seen.

Otherwise all of the above are great suggestions!

Phantasm was great. I really loved It Followed. Some others listed here I like were The Shining, The Fog, The Witch, and The Wailing. Zombie was listed here too; The Beyond was another great 70s Italian horror movie. It Comes at Night was dreadful (dread-filled) and brutal.

Some horror films I like (I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch of stuff, this is just top of my head)...

* = personal favorites aka pure classics

Dead of Night (1945)

Eyes Without a Face (1960)

Psycho (1960)*

The Innocents (1961)

The Haunting (1963)

Night of the Living Dead (1968)

Don't Look Now

The Exorcist*

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)*

Deep Red (1975)

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Alien*

The Shining*

Poltergeist (1982)

The Entity (1982 -- this is a bad movie overall, but the first 30 minutes are legit scary)

The Thing (1982)*

Come and See* (technically a "war" film but probably the most psychologically horrifying movie ever made)

The Fly (1986)

Hellraiser (1987 original)

Spoorloos (avoid the 90s remake The Vanishing)*

The Exorcist III (flawed but good)

The Silence of the Lambs*

Candyman (1992)

The Sixth Sense*

What Lies Beneath (always liked this one, some great trick shots)

The Devil's Backbone

Pulse (2001)

Signs (#DemonTheory)*

The Ring (2002) -- I actually prefer the remake here

The Descent

1408 (not amazing but fun)

The Orphanage

REC 1&2 (best found footage ever IMO)

Insidious 1&2

The Conjuring

It Follows* (my favorite American horror film of the 2010s)

The Wailing*

Get Out

Ghost Stories (2017)

It (2017)

The Nightingale

The Haunting of Hill House (Netflix series)*

Doctor Sleep

The old classic horror movies from the 30s are worth a watch too, especially Frankenstein. And the 50s had a lot of great stuff too, like Them!, Creature from the Black Lagoon and The Incredible Shrinking Man.

Look up the movie "1 Man 1 Jar" Starring Nicholas Cage. An epic body horror thriller film for the ages.

The cabin in the woods is a VERY clever take on the classical "teens go to cabin/ monsters or zombies turn up and kill everyone " genre. Seriously, I was both highly entertained and intellectually satisfied by this one. And there's an AWESOME last second actor cameo...

You can't go wrong with the original Halloween. I would also recommend Halloween II, 4 through 6, the 2018 one and Halloween Kills (though these last two disregard everything except the first movie.)
