Halloween themed mods

Recommended Posts

Are there any mods that replace textures, monsters, items, weapons, etc with Halloween-themed sprites and textures? I am talking about thing like giving levels a graveyard or hautend house aesthetic and giving imps pumpkin heads or turning cacodemons into jack-o-lanterns. Anything that puts the spirit Halloween into Doom would be great, but am hoping for more options for Doom 2.

Torture maps. Not entirely my thing, but definitely Halloweeny.

What exactly makes any of those maps torturous?

I see those types of maps as the Super Mario Maker of Doom maps. They're what happens when Doom modders get bored of the traditional tactical map design and decide to take it up a hundred notches on the difficulty scale just for the sake of it. With these maps, it's a safe bet that they'll be chock-full of cyberdemons and archviles.

I'm not knocking your taste if you like them, though. I'm more of a casual Doom player who doesn't fare too well in those types of maps. I prefer the type of atmosphere and challenge you'd find in BTSX which I am currently playing again. Also, that Pumpkin HELL up above was also good, though the music was not.

been searching for something like this for quite a time, too.
wonder why there are soo many christmass themed project but almost non haloween themed.
Maybe all thought that Doom is alredy scary enough for a haloween re-skining.

Actually, those maps are the ones that have most time spent on making them, as they need lots of playtesting and redesigning to be what they are. Drawing and making all those details its not out of boredom, but passion.

Since you made the comparison with the kaizo mario style levels or those really hard fan made, both the mario community and doom community have something in common.
They both have a really huge and lively speedrunning community.
These kind of maps are usually meant for those speedrunners to play.
The speedrunning community always seeks greater challenge, and the mappers always make harder maps.
That way, the design of the game evolves, to the point that the actual gaming companies behind them, look at the community in search of new ideas an designing choices.

I was going to recommend Wormwood by Ribbiks and Grain of Salt, but seeing as you think a level being difficult is a sign of the mapper's lack of skill rather than your own maybe you should steer clear.

Anyway, it's not Halloween themed, but if you want some fun, spooky maps that are closer to Plutonia's difficulty, check out Hellground

That could be why indeed. However, the spirit of Halloween is something entirely different. That's the symbolic and festive side of the holiday, the jack-o-lanterns, candy, witches, skeletons, cobwebs, etc. I think a good Halloween mod would be Doom Monster Mash that would feature all the traditional horror icons like Dracula, mummies, Frankenstein's monster, fish guy, wolf man, etc. Add flaming pumpkins as someone mentioned above, bags of candy of varying size for health, and some comically spook music and that would be a fun mod indeed, though ambitious.

Okay, so I didn't think about the speedrun community. Maybe my comment doesn't apply to that, but there are still a lot of maps that are just ridiculously hard for the hell of it. I wasn't aware of the speedrun maps, so I just thought those above were your typical hard-just-bcuz maps. I played them for a bit and didn't see anything "speedrunny" about them, though. I guess they're just really hard maps that you're supposed to complete really fast???

top hue. I didn't even say anything that could be remotely construed as that. I will check out the wad you linked, though.

May not be intentional, but definitely seems disrespectful to mappers who pour hours and hours into getting an encounter just right. I've only just started getting into the harder stuff myself, and a lot of it is well beyond my skill level - but even so the dedication and skill put into making these clockwork death machines is staggering. It's definitely not out of boredom. They're made because there's a certain rush in facing down hordes of monsters, or overcoming a tricky combat puzzle, and quite a few people enjoy it.

Anyway I'll stop being a pedantic dick now and recommend another set you might enjoy: Spooktober. It's a bit uneven in places, but it's probably closest to what you're looking for.

Most of us were complete newbies when we mapped for that thing, and it shows. But there ARE some gems nevertheless.

/vr/'s own Halloween project, Ad Mortem, should be due very soon. Has some new monsters, reskinned guns, and a spooky (yet also somewhat lighthearted) theme. The levels seem nice (I have yet to playtest them myself).

It's in MBF21, using some of the new DeHacked, so you'll want to use it in a port such as DSDA. GzDoom doesn't yet have proper support for the new monsters, but hopefully it will soon.

There are different categories for speedrunning, like pacifist run, where you don't shoot or punch unless it is to activate a switch or (i think) detonate some barrels.
Tyson run, where you complete the level only punching your enemies, and many others.
The premise is simple, usually, UV max in the shortest time possible.
The ''speedrunny'' thing you mentioned, are things the normal or casual player never realise or even think about.
Designing choices, little map tricks to avoid or secuence break part of the maps.

All that is on the mind of the designer at the moment of making the map.
