galileo31dos01 Posted October 31, 2021 (edited) Previous threads: 1 2 3 4 5 6 The idea is simple, you see screenshots of map layouts from the widest pool ever that is doom content, and you're free to guess as many maps as you can. Each will belong to a different wad to make things varied and interesting, and they can belong to Ultimate Doom/Doom 2, Final Doom, Heretic, pwads from those games, and total conversions as well. Unlike most previous threads, there won't be a difficulty curve by tiers this time, yet I sort of mixed it up so that it's more or less easier at the start and harder at the end. Like before, the screenshots will be accompanied by a hint for each one. New additional hints will be revealed on the 4th of November, and the answers on the 7th. So get guessing! 01 Spoiler - With a grand total of 8 barons, this old maze deserved its name - The southernmost section holds a secret yellow skull on a "tank" with lava 02 Spoiler - The leftmost area has balconies filled with revenants, and hallways filled with hardly visible pigs - Better treat those hell knights in the middle first before revealing more hell.... 03 Spoiler - Get running, get gearing up, and don't let the popes nuke you in a corner - It's also the start of an orange-themed 4th episode 04 Spoiler - In this TC's secret map, you meet with the puppies you rescued before - While the puppies follow you, the rabbits rather walk away from you 05 Spoiler - We all were once so madly confused by the switches in this map - That wide hallway at the bottom is full of lost souls and a blue skull 06 Spoiler - This lovely place was inspired by Doom City - You can enter a store, but you can't take the googles with you on your way out 07 Spoiler - A cacoward winner, with caco babies and a caco boss - Takes place in hell, an entirely stock-textured gargantuan hell, excepting a red fiery skybox 08 Spoiler - There may be no doom 2 baddies, but the blood and nukage trails really hurt here - Perhaps one notable feature from the get-go is a checkerboard-styled floor texture 09 Spoiler - Oh yeah, what you see is high detail perfection done in vanilla (but limit-removing) format - It won a cacoward on 2017 10 Spoiler - The eastern portion hides a powerful secret, among the many other secrets in this orange monster - The main area (or hub) gets flooded numerous times at key points, what a nightmare! 11 Spoiler - It's christmas! and it's also AAAAAAAAAA - Not joking, every corner is filled with agitation 12 Spoiler - A magnified tribute of a popularly acclaimed favorite classic of many people - The cyberdemons released periodically mark your progression 13 Spoiler - The opener of an award winning episode, currently under development after god knows how many years - If you explore in depth, you can meet green gargoyles 14 Spoiler - There are two [insert map title] here, so it's still in the spirit of the megawad - And if we speak of homages, the rows of bonuses forming an X in the middle of the northern [insert map title] is kind of there 15 Spoiler - The finale of a series of speedmapped-megawads, includes the works of the people you see in the picture - There's no right or wrong order to tackle each author's segment 16 Spoiler - Those pointy things in the middle must be raised to reach the exit - The flower-shaped bottom left area is entirely REDWALL1 and black 17 Spoiler - While working out how to destroy the brain, you gotta be wary of rocket troopers, imps shooting green, and whatever else that's summoned around - Despite the shen long in the titlepic, you never really fight any dragons in this wad 18 Spoiler - If you peek through the windows, you can see the baby spaceship orbiting around the mother - Each wing is color-coded to differ from each other, and the middle is the most colorful 19 Spoiler - The mapper is a self-proclaimed MM2's maniac - Oh yeah, that plasma rifle placement though, the bane of us demo recorders 20 Spoiler - Pumpkin keys! - By a joyful mapper 21 Spoiler - You arrived in your boat to a giant monstrosity, seriously what is that... - Surely the lord of the boat wasn't expecting to be exploring the inner parts of that thing... 22 Spoiler - The mapper wasn't fully satisfied with his contribution to a Plutonia project, so he crafted this big boy as a potential sequel to it - It's something else when you're given free radsuits for days, but the toxic doesn't hurt, as is the case here 23 Spoiler - This secret map may look like a hot dog, but you're actually in an iron lich sandwich - But the question is, will you finally become a believer after beating the map... 24 Spoiler - It's the author's most twisted, mazelike, brutal and sort of plutonic land - You get to decide whether you suffer hell to acquire an early SSG or sort it out with the SG for a good chunk, if on UV that is 25 Spoiler - After entering through the "wormhole" transition, you'll meet an Inferno-styled dungeon, with nazi soldiers among regular monsters - So basically you enter a dimensional portal, only it reads in spanish. Good luck! Edited November 5, 2021 by galileo31dos01 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Wavy Posted October 31, 2021 Here's my guesses: Spoiler 1: TNT Evilution - MAP25: Baron's Den 4: REKKR - E4M1 (Don't recall the actual map name) 5: Doom - E3M4: House of Pain 7: HURT.wad 12: Containment Area by J.C. Bengtson 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
SiFi270 Posted October 31, 2021 (edited) Spoiler 3. Valiant Map19: The Popes of Roam 4. REKKR E4M9: home.wad 5. Doom E3M4: House of Pain 6. Kuchitsu Map07: Doom Town 7. Hurt 11. H2HMUD01, H2HMud CE Map01, H2HMud FE Map01, H2H Xmas Map12 12. Containment Area Map12: Containment Area 13. Mordeth Map01 (I wonder if it's still there and recognizable?) 17. Obituary Map16: Conclusion 18. Mothership 19. Pumpkin Hell 20. Kamikaze Suicidal EDIT: I looked at the above guesses and I can't believe I didn't recognize number 1. For some reason I was so dead set on it being a variation of Gate to Limbo. I was like "maybe it's an alpha version that Tom Hall made too complex and someone had to simplify it for the final version?" so I went to the wiki page for the 0.5 alpha to see if that had a version of E3M7, and it turned out to be the version that's flipping us off. >:| Edited October 31, 2021 by SiFi270 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
vdgg Posted October 31, 2021 No hints Spoiler 1. Evilution MAP25. I found it familiar from the first second, but it took about a minute of thinking to actually pick what I think is the correct map. 17. Obituary the boss map, which is, I think, MAP16. 19. I know this one, but whoever guesses that correctly is a superhuman in my eyes With hints Spoiler 5. This zigzag ledge in the centre... 8. NEIS perhaps? 12. This might be Containment Area, a Sailor Scout WAD which was in 100 WADs of all time 16. Sharp Things? Probably not, but let's half-blind guess 21. Lost Civilization MAP... emm.03? 24. No idea, but with the hints my blind guess is Skepland MAP03 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
NuMetalManiak Posted October 31, 2021 (edited) Spoiler 1. TNT MAP25 Barons Den 2. Hell Revealed 2 MAP27 Resistance Remains 3. Valiant MAP19 The Popes of Roam 4. Something from Boaty Mcboat...wait, TC. Maybe REKKR but I haven't got the clue. 5. Doom E3M4 House of Pain 6. Kuchitsu MAP05 Doom Town (just did secrets for the wad not too long ago even though this map didn't have any) 7. Cacoboss? Cacobabies? My best guess is BTSXE2 MAP15 but that doesn't have either 8. No End In Sight E2M3 9. Looks like Mechadon but doesn't have his signature logo with it. Just had to stare at it long enough, it's Brigandine. 10. Tangerine Nightmare MAP07 (author logo kind of a giveaway) 11. H2H-XMAS MAP12 12. SailorScout's Containment Area 13. Something something Mordeth MAP01 perhaps? 14. D2INO MAP18 15. One of those weird amalgamation MAP30s for 3 heures d'agonie 3 or L'agonie Finale, one of the two. (again author logos help) 16. Sharp Things 17. and then the simple one gets me. 18. This looks like that one 32in24 that had the 3-way CTF but I'm probably way off. 19. vdgg made maps?! 20. I recognize something on the left, maybe a 50 monsters map? really no clue now that I think about it. 21. the fleshboat level from Boaty McBoatwad, can't remember which slot. 22. no clue but looks like a valkiriforce level. (decided to do an idgames search, it must be Kamikaze Suicidal based on the hints, I played that once) 23. Really tempted to say Cyberdreams MAP22 but your hint says Heretic so... 24. Skepland MAP02 or MAP03 25. *runs away* Got 12, maybe 13 here, edit after clarifying. Edited November 1, 2021 by NuMetalManiak 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
RjY Posted November 1, 2021 (edited) Only the maps I recognise on sight. No research, just colourful commentary! Spoiler 01 This is Baron's Den from TNT. I think it's map25? Not to be confused with Baron's Lair, that's Plutonia. 02 Isn't this a late map from Hell Revealed 2? I forgot the slot exactly. 24 at least, probably higher. 03 No idea whatsoever 04 No idea, I don't tend to play TCs. 05 Passing through the human body in House Of Pain! Doom E3M4. 06 "Inspired by Doom City" ? Memfis' Kuchitsu? 07 No idea, too modern 08 I think I recognise this but I can't name it 09 Looks like Mechadon/Skillsaw/Xaser etc. but don't think I've played it 10 Orange and by Roofi, not sure, let's guess at Tangerine Nightmare? 11 One of the MUD wads, by Dave Swift, MUDRAM or MUDVAT or some such. Also in H2H-Xmas, fairly early slot, map06-ish? 12 Containment Area by Sailorscout, the first Boom wad I ever played, in late 1999 when DIY implemented support for them. 13 Looks vaguely familiar but no name occurs Oh, of course, this is Mordeth E1 MAP01. It came to me immediately on review after three days. Fascinating how the memory works. 14 Argh I could immediately visualise the map but had to stare at it for ages trying to think of megawads I'd played until the name came to me. D2ino map18, The Courtyard(s). 15 Never played it but the clue suggests 3 Heures D'Agonie Final? 16 Well I guess it's a Xaser wad but beyond that I have no idea. 17 Don't know, if it has custom monsters I would have avoided it 18 No idea 19 Shamefully I wouldn't have got this without the clue, but it's Explanada, the fail-the-plasma-gun-jump-24-times-in-a-row map. vdgg even credited me in the text file for inspiration and I had absolutely no idea why. I have a demo if he wants a laugh. 20 Pumpkin Hell by Jimmy. 21 Seriously what is that indeed? 22 I feel like I should get this one from the clue but I don't 23 Oh well if it has iron liches I have no idea 24 That's Skepland isn't it? Third map? 25 It looks vaguely familiar. I've played a few of these dual world maps. No... no idea. Wait. You said Spanish. Garrulo has a dual world map. It's Garrulo MAP21. Edited November 5, 2021 by RjY Added guesses for #13 and #25, hopefully our quizmaster will notice without my having to make a second post 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Shepardus Posted November 1, 2021 Here's what I got this time: Spoiler 1. TNT MAP25 - Baron's Den (I don't know TNT well enough to have gotten this without the hint...) 3. Valiant MAP19 - The Popes of Roam (thanks to the hint for this one) 5. E3M4 - House of Pain (I replayed this quite recently and I still don't understand the switches) 10. Tangerine Nightmare MAP07 - Goetia (the "orange" in the hint and the "Roofi" in the automap allowed me to figure this out despite not having played the map. It also helps that TN was fresh in my mind from having watched MtPain27's video on it.) 12. Containment Area (SailorScout's map, not E2M2. Nice touch putting this as #12, as the map occupies the MAP12 slot.) 15. L'agonie Finale (no way I would have gotten this without perusing Doom Wiki's articles on 3 heures d'agonie, I didn't even know this existed) 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
ReaperAA Posted November 1, 2021 The ones I recognize Spoiler 1: Baron's Den (Map25) from TNT: Evilution 3: The Popes of Roam (Map19) from Valiant - I didn't recognize this at first, but reading the "don't let the popes nuke you in a corner" gave it away 7: Hurt.wad by Elend - Again only realised from the hint of baby-cacos 8: E2M3 from NEIS 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
RHhe82 Posted November 1, 2021 Let’s see… Spoiler 1. This is a guess based on the hint, but could it be TNT Evilution’s Baron’s Den? 5. This one’s gotta be E3M4, House of Pain. and that’s all :-( I have played so little. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
galileo31dos01 Posted November 5, 2021 Just added extra hints like promised (heh, better than late than never). I was quite generous with the former hints that I struggled to come up with new ones, so hopefully they do help. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
RHhe82 Posted November 5, 2021 Additional guesses: Spoiler 07: New hint helped, and the fact that I randomly watched Decino’s video on this yesterday. Hurt.wad. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

erzboesewicht Posted November 6, 2021 Spoiler 1. TNT Evilution MAP25 (Baron's Den) 3. Valiant MAP19 (The Popes of Roam) 5. E3M4 House of pain 6. maybe one of the "Holocaust" maps in Kama Sutra? 14. MAP18: The Courtyard(s) in Doom 2 in Name Only I'm still bad at this due to limited experience outside of the big classics, but let's go ^ 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

vdgg Posted November 8, 2021 Featuring my map was quite unexpected. Also, @RjY actually guessed, wow. Old FDAs are welcome! If it were someone else's map, who knows, maybe I would be swearing at the stupid mapper and his plasma gun placement. As the author I will still claim it was brilliant. By the way, it is worth checking how @Bdubzzz dealt with that in his UV Max Spoiler skip it, come back with rocket launcher and health and armor, rocket jump 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
RjY Posted November 8, 2021 I was vaguely disappointed by the lack of who-guessed-what in the answers. Sorry for any mistakes. Uncertain cases were given benefit of the doubt.@vdgg Just let me write a text file okay here you go, xplanada-hntr-1828.lmp (sorry for continuing to use hosts that do not preserve filenames). No cursing here, I fully agree it is a great secret. It just seems to need superlatively precise movement direction and speed control to avoid bouncing off a vertex, or P_TryMove-ing too far into a thin staircase to keep one's momentum intact, while still moving fast enough to clear the gap. There must be a trick to it that is beyond my skill as a player. Spoiler 2021-11-08: Demo originally recorded 2014-06-09 to highlight my struggle with the plasma gun jump, in the hope the author would be amused, take pity, and explain the trick of it. As defeating the monsters and conquering the map was not the point, I intentionally lowered the skill setting, and took various non- optimal actions, such as stopping to read the skill-adjusted farewell message. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
