You know, looking back on this thread, it kinda gave me an idea. Maybe I'll try posting something here eventually.

Sure! I'd love to see more speed maps. I'll try and make one when I get home today. We'll see. Maybe I'll allow an hour so I can make it a bit prettier. Maybe add some traps. We'll see.

Sorry - didn't mean to tag you there - I see you linked to some maps in a set of 53. I tend to avoid huge sets like this cause I simply do not have time to take that many maps on. However, if there is a particular map you would like to see me play let me know and I'll have a look :) PM me

I will throw my hat into the ring with my own speedmap.  I confess my perfectionism made me go over the time limit: I duly spent 30 minutes on the layout, but spent so much time texturing and balancing and then tweaking that the total time jumped from 50 to 100 minutes (so 30 minutes for layout, an hour for everything else); which is sad because it's a tiny map and probably more of a pain in the ass than anything.  But god damn it I had fun making this, it's nice to see a map done in under a couple hours.  Look forward to trying some speedmapping again.

That's what matters. I'm behind on the last two wads posted here. I'll give them a spin this afternoon. Might make Rhodes2 as well . . . .

We'll see.

You should. Your first map there is really well-made and appealing to look at, and after my effort I’m amazed you completed your whole one in half the time o_O

I have ideas for a second too. This has the makings of an addiction I tell you what

It really does haha. Also the texturing and things placement happened and lighting happened after the 30 minutes. So I really appreciate that but I'm unhappy with the looks myself. I didn't have time for all my lighting and windows and outdoor areas and the like. Oh well, it wouldn't be a speedmap otherwise. Thank you!

I had quite the amazing experience playing this - so good I played it twice! This is certainly not a map for the blind player - but something very fun to practice on!

Let me start with my horrible first attemp with saves + commentary:

I complained a lot at the difficulty haha - but I commend the design - it's very well crafted and you can tell thought was put into this. This is definately doable without saves - I know I can after this second attempt

I decided to play again to see how far I could get without saves, no commentary and more focus - I always record myself because you never know when something cool can happen. Oh man the stress trying to beat this but I ultimately failed by succumbing to the last monster - it was still an amazing experience

kudos!

@Clippy thanks for the videos and commentary!  Yeah, I intended it to be kind of an evil bastard level but figured the shortness would offset the evil somewhat...I'm glad you liked it, bastardness aside, and that my concept seems to have paid off for the most part.  Distracting the archies with the spider mastermind was a really good idea, and I'm glad you discovered the shotgun farm on the second playthrough ;)  Glad I added the candle too, it was a last-minute afterthought after I'd even uploaded the link but it occurred to me that the lift should be telegraphed...you know, with something.

@CBM Neat concept for a map, although it was so murky that I could barely tell what I was doing without cranking the gamma up to max--you can probably go a bit lighter on the underwater color filtering :p Once I fixed that, it was fun to pop in and out of bits of E1M1 and kill stuff from a novel perspective.  The added details around the hangar itself were cool, too.  It might be worthwhile to make the exit a key door, or something, or maybe to seal off the ceiling hole in the last room, since as it is it's really easy to just drop in on the imp and zombie party at the end and finish the map in 30 seconds, and it could be fun to make the player explore the hangar and its periphery a bit more.  Anyway it's a fun idea for a speedmap, and nice to see speedmapping in UDMF anyway

Thanks for playing, for the kind words and for the suggestions :-)

I could try to make another version of the map and post it again.

EDIT:

here is a version with the suggested changes, making it a bit more challenging to complete than before:

@Stupid Bunny glad you liked the videos. I still want to practice some more and try to do a really perfect run. On that second run I was so nervous I forgot I had the super shotgun

Haha and I rarely replay maps. I always had fun. This time I got the spider to kill the Archie's. Great times - so many interesting possibilities in this bite sized map. It's fantastic!!

I watched @Clippy's playthrough video above, and boy was this savage. Really loved the layout. Well done.

I like how you said "don't jump," and I figured that this is because the archviles will be jumping you around, no need for you to use your own legs like a sucker.

@Stupid Bunny I thought up one more thing I just had to try lol - took me a few times on my break working from home 😄

Hah I love it <3 You've found more ways to approach this tiny map than I imagined there were, which is great since player flexibility, replayability, nonlinearity etc. are all things I try and build into my maps

Hello everybody, here's Rhodes02.

Here's my plan for upcoming speed map releases: even numbered maps are Boom compatible and are allowed an hour of construction. They also have to have less than 100 monsters.

Odd numbered levels are vanilla and have only 20 monsters and 30 minute build time. Oh and I added par times through an embedded BEX patch.

So come and get it, another Dusty Speedmap.

That's an interesting experiment, thank you for sharing. I think it can easily apply to any form of art, to force something out of yourself and continue working on it with more interest and motivation. I'll make sure to try time limitation one day to get at least something done, I often just sit and feel like I have no good ideas and leave

I played your map and I think it's not that bad for thirty minutes, I just wish it was a bit more challenging. I'm not a speedrunner at all but did it in 22 seconds on second attempt
