MegaZzZeux Posted November 28, 2021 Thought not quite a "speed map" in the classical sense...The map I started recently is being built at least 10x faster than what I would do years ago...Now let's see if i can finish my first map in 15 years. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Thanks I Will look forward to a gameplay video then :-) Be advised that its a difficult map even on the lowest difficulty BTW! Maribo Posted November 29, 2021 Going through the stuff posted in this thread now (that is compatible with DSDA-Doom), with FDAs and max demos for fun. StrangerRanger: First room feels very Doom 1. The Pain Elemental is funny and completely helpless as long as he doesn't get hit by one of the imps, lol. strangerranger.zip DuckReconMajor: The chaingun room looks nice but wow it's cramped and painful to move around in. I found the secret using the map because I'm blind. :^). Too bad I fell in the pit and didn't actually get the exit. duckreconmajor.zip RataUnderground: Layout is neat but feels a little bit empty. That's a MEAN Archvile teleport for blind play, but not bad with foreknowledge. The final fight could be spruced up, it's a bit tedious and one note, especially compared to the vile right before it. Nausea.zip Stupid Bunny: I love red maps and I love the BFG, but the walkway that lowers is really awkward to play around and the Spider Mastermind is a non-threat. The ability to farm shotgun ammo is silly (in a fun way). After my FDA I swapped to OpenGL rendering so I was straining my eyes less, lol. angychair.zip - these were done in cl9 by accident but I don't think they make a real difference with the way the map plays, sorry though. Gibbon: Tyson-tastic. Found the secret by noticing an oddity with the wall and then the texture. beige.zip CBM: Very wooden. Probably a bit overblown on UV, it's like a really drawn out clean-up level. It makes playing it feel like a really weird puzzle, that's not a compliment or a derogatory statement, just stating how it felt while casually playing. The dedication to the pure wood-everything aesthetic is kind of admirable. Played on the latest link posted. woodcrawl.zip - the max here is only 100% kills and not 100% secrets, I didn't feel like doing secret hunting after, sorry. Dubbag: Very 5 minutes. 5mm.zip - the 2nd demo is a reality max Dusty_Rhodes: All of these were played on the upload titled RLT. Rhodes1: Like a trickier traditional level. I get softlocked in my FDA, lol. rhodes1.zip Rhodes2: Not blind, I remember watching Clippy's video on this, at least up until the red key room. I would have made this a full tyson map, I think, but also probably would have removed the barons since they really just serve as a time sink. The Archvile is pretty toothless since you can see him early, having to punch him out would be a nice finale. I like Rhodes3 the most, but really that's because I like two-shotting cyberdemons and using the bfg to clean things up. rhodes2.zip 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

I like Rhodes3 the most, but really that's because I like two-shotting cyberdemons and using the bfg to clean things up. rhodes2.zip Thanks for playing and the comments. The demos were great. On Rhodes1, sorry for the softlock. I have to admit it made me laugh when I saw it. Oh and the lifts in the last room are stupid, they shouldn't jut out. I don't know why I made them that way, 30 minute limits made my brain fry I guess. On Rhodes2, I gave the player too much ammo; I have a tendency to do so. I find I really like being flush with ammo as a player, a la Knee Deep in the Dead. That subconciously seeps into my maps, even when I try to add some ammo starvation. Tyson maps are a lot of fun, when I finish the Rhodes series, I plan on doing a redux wad where I make them into full levels, add visual details, better combat, etc. This one will probably be made into a full Tyson map. Map01 will certainly have to have less ammo too, so continuous players like myself are still challenged. The Archvile is lame, and just like the lifts in Map01, I didn't want to fix the mistake. I want to present the maps as is, feels more honest that way. I don't want to cheat on my own rules. The Barons were kinda dumb, but I felt like the level was short and that the Vile would be scarier if something big was revived. I'm proud of Rhodes3, and I'm excited to form it into a more refined level. I have too much ammo for someone like you (a much better player than me). But I want it to be fair for most players. I find this map a lot of fun and really enjoy telefrag secrets. Thanks again. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

LOL :-) I guess that description could kinda fit the UV setting. The level is intended to be designed to become more and more slaughter the higher the difficulty selected. I did spot a texture error at the exit though.. the red door was supposed to the same on each side Any recommendations for improvements? Stupid Bunny Posted November 29, 2021 (edited) @CBM I love the wood textures in Doom so as soon as I saw the screenshots I was like "I gotta try this at some point". I confess I haven't beaten it yet, it's not for the faint of heart heh. The layout is branching, surprisingly sprawling and well-interconnected, which is good, and the fact that a lot of the rooms look exactly the same as each other means it's easy to get lost, which is less good especially coupled with the fact that there's so many monsters emerging from the floor that I don't have much of a chance to find my bearings at any given time. So many arch-viles...it's easy to get trapped and mauled to death almost anywhere in the map, but from how far I've gotten I suspect there's an approach to it (or maybe a few) by which I can get them all whaling on each other and then start picking them off with the BFG. Will probably play it on an easier difficulty for starters though :p Nice work! Edited November 29, 2021 by Stupid Bunny 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Clippy Posted November 29, 2021 I couldn't do commentary with my wife working from home in the next room on this snowy day - so I decided to make saveless runs of these maps instead of my usual FDAs Each in the vid represents my first successful run of each map - I'm one and done I don't go try to do better after I succeed once @Dusty_Rhodes start - This one was frustrating to blind run - so I chimed in with @Biodegradable to learn the map a bit - most annoying part was the start with the pistol dudes and especially the pain in the ass elementals - not so bad after that especially with that final secret. PS you can fall off at the end area and get soft locked and not die @CBM 3:06 - This as the hardest & longest in the bunch. I had a few lengthy failed runs and I was starting to think I couldn't do it ... then I did it - never found the best strategy but I got er done. Too many Archviles - impressive fast map with the right amount of resources - it was an amazing feeling to UV max this. This gave me a harder time then when I tried to UV saveless my own map Malevolent Murder Machine today @Dubbag 22:22 - How is it going buddy. I don't think I could make a 5 min map I am slow at mapping haha - it's short - it functions - not much to say @Stupid Bunny 22:55 - I am not sure if it's possible to UV max this one - I even looked in the editor - can't see a way to get the megasphere. Making an archie blast you onto a pillar of cells is mean - I did find it interesting how the switches were guarded - spiders essentially useless on too small ledges maybe - there's a frustrating softlocking inescapable pit in this map that's not fun to fall in. Maxed it the most I could 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Stupid Bunny Posted November 29, 2021 @Clippy crap the map isn’t working the way it’s supposed to for you…there aren’t supposed to be any inescapable pits, everything should be available without archie jumps and that megasphere is very freely accessible when everything raises/lowers like it should. I guess this is what I get for trying weird donut sector madness lol. I’m removing the download links until I can make it work in all source ports. Sorry you had to deal with that! 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

I will admit, it comes off as a clumsy Plutonia - wannabe (The Omen, specifically), but with only 30 minutes I think I did okay. @Dubbag honestly not bad for 5 minutes, I did a run through myself. Dubbag Posted November 29, 2021 (edited) Thanks @Clippy. Yeah the Rev part didn't really pan out the way I wanted. Oh well it's a throw away map anyways. Dusty_Rhodes Posted November 30, 2021 Hey all! Hot off the node builder: here's Rhodes4! Map 04 on RTL.wad, make sure to idclev or warp if you want to pistol start. Keep it on complevel 9 or Boom (Strict). This marks some Dusty Doom history, my first city map ever. I might've been too ambitious for a one hour build time, as there's a few empty looking areas. I think this one is really fun and has the potential to be a really great level with some refinement. The music is Going Down the Fast Way by the wonderful Lee Jackson. In the starting room, make sure to look at the computers behind you. There may or may not be a shootable switch (wink wink). In general, keep an eye out for candles and don't step backwards on indoors staircases, looking at you @Clippy! @Arrowhead you expressed some interest, so come and get it. I also really recommend playing the wad from Map01 - Map04, it's really fun and Map04 is a great romp with a nearly full inventory. Not nearly as frustrating as Map03, which annoys me even with the previous maps' inventory. Try it out. What's new: Fixed CWILV02 to be consistent with the rest Added CWILV03 Updated embedded CREDITS lump with new music Added Map04 DOWNLOAD: RLT.zip 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Arrowhead Posted November 30, 2021 Alright, so I actually played all 4 of the maps in that WAD. Wow, I'm very surprised these are speedmaps! Very cogent ideas for such a short time period! RHODES1: I really liked the infighting you could get started w/ the hellknights and the revenants behind them - I preferred that to having to fire rockets from those tight angles. Only thing I didn't like too much was that one startan hallway. Quite a fun time! RHODES2: I think R2 has a very cool secret - nice to see it looking nice, instead of just being a 64x64 closet like most secrets I encounter... I finished the map w/ an archvile blast - very fun. I played them so quickly together, that the maps are blending together in my head - that's my problem, not yours, haha - but I think this was the one that had that sweet Tyson gameplay at the start... Correct me, if I'm wrong! RHODES3: I got scared! Quite a mean crowd of demons in this one! I had to employ a lot of circle-strafing - I finally got up that elevator into the teleporter - dodged around that mean spidermomma - and actually death exited this one! (she cruelly shot me in the back as I was making a run for it, lol) RHODES4: I couldn't find out how to get the BFG in the first room - I liked how the demons appeared to be 'roaming around' in the distance the moment I spawned in. The cybie telefrag is awesome, (I included an optional one in one of my recent unreleased SP maps) - it is fun using the cybie to slaughter the other demons in this level. I liked the key system, too - very easy to understand your goals in this level. Fun stuff, keep it up - haven't had this much fun w/ speedmaps in ages! :D I can't even imagine what you'd be able to make in a longer time period! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

R1: Thanks, the infighting was intended. Glad you liked it. And yeah, the STARTAN hallway is very ugly, but this was my first go at speedmapping. And in 30 minutes, no less. I'm happy you enjoyed it. R2: I loved making the secret. It was inspired by a Jimmy map, I can't remember which. I was playing Doom on my Xbox months ago and he had a similar (much better executed) secret. I remember secret lifts and teleports leading to a sick outdoor fight with nice natural scenery. Mine was nowhere near as good, but again, I'm glad you liked it. Having appreciation for going beyond the "64x64 closet" really makes me want to continue mapping this way. I still think it's nice, Jimmy just did it better. :p R3: Yeah this one is terrible, too RNG based. I think it has a lot more potential to be a great level when further refined, unlike the first two maps. Those are pretty safe and easy to approach. Map03, on the other hand, is very abrasive but has the possibility to be very fun. It took a lot of inspiration from Plutonia's The Omen and I think it shows. Oh and I don't blame you for forgetting, I think the first two maps are very forgettable. This is where the wad gets memorable. Overall, this could use more work and would end up very fun. I think it's enjoyable, but only when the dice roll your way. For the secret, teleport to Spider Mama, then run right. The island with the candle is how you win. Very fun secret in my opinion. R4: Really proud of this. It's my most realized and ambitious speed map by far. I think the fights, especially when playing continuously, are awesome. My goal was to have gibbtastic, BFG - fueled carnage. I think Mr. Jackson's midi really helps, but this was overall super fun. Take a look the computer console to your left at the start of the level. Shoot the switch, then grab what comes down. Then you can really start slaughtering . . . . I'm really happy you enjoyed the Cyberdemon use. My goal was to do something in the vein of Odessey of Noises from Plutonia. Except this can be 100% hehe. It's good to see that the level was easy to understand and navigate, I was going for something a little non - linear. Did you like the room over room using Boom silent teleporters? I'm really happy with that. Definitely try it again and see if you can get all the secrets in the wad. I'm very proud of them, even if it's a silly, mediocre map I whipped up in an hour. Anyway, thanks. It means a lot coming from you, seeing how many great wads you've played over at the Wad Archeology thread.
