Im looking for megawads recommendations

Hi all.

I would like to play a megawad with the "haunted moon base" feeling of the classic doom 1.

It's a very broad thing im asking, but i don't know that many megawads at all.

As a self-described Ultimate Doom connoisseur, I know of some wads that may be of interest to you:

Doom The Way id Did

Pretty much exactly what it says on the tin. Of everything I've played, this set comes the closest to replicating the design sensibilities of the original Doom (unsurprising, since that was the creators' goal), whilst maintaining a more modern level of polish. If you like the set, I would also recommend checking out DTWiD: The Lost Episodes, which is a collection of rejects from the main project that is well worth experiencing in its own right.

Lunar Catastrophy

Another retro set, somewhat less polished than DTWiD but far more experimental and unpredictable. Be warned, though, this one gets difficult towards the end, far more so than the original Doom.

Nihility: Infinite Teeth

While technically an episode-replacement rather than a megawad, this one is a must play for any fan of E2. Nihility is one of the most original and visionary OG Doom wads out there, with extensive and well-designed modifications to both the bestiary and arsenal, inspired by the Doom alphas. Most interestingly of all, the set eschews all music and instead relies on ambiet sound effects, giving it a uniquely haunting and oppressive atmosphere.

No End In Sight

My favourite wad of all time, NEIS is by far the biggest and baddest set ever released for Doom 1, a sprawling adventure spanning 38 maps, many of which can take an hour or more to beat. While the first episode (mostly) comes off as an extension of DTWiD, the maps only grow larger and more deranged as the set goes on, to the point that, after conquering E4M8, I could scarcely believe how humble the set's opening maps seemed in comparison. I cannot recommend this one highly enough.

Welcome to Doomworld!

May I recommend:

Doom the Way id Did (maps made in the style of the original Doom 1, there is an "Ultimate Doom the Way id Did" and it's added on seperately)
Classic Episode (replacement for Episode 1 of Doom 1)
Deus Vult (slaughtermaps but looks a lot like Doom 1's 2nd episode bases in the first map)
No End in Sight (really good)

Also use GZDoom for max vision, PRBoom+ for max speed, or Crispy Doom for a more optimized vanilla+ experience without all the hassle.

Infernovasion has some really strong atmosphere and fun combat encounters. It's a great Doom 1 set.

Somehow I think you skipped reading the opening post. Also, I see you mention these to every newcomer. Are you trying to scare them away?

I want people to see these difficult wads and then want to improve themselves at the game so they can enjoy them and then perhaps they might make their own maps in a similar vein. This may seem convoluted however it was and still is my motivation to improve at doom and wads such as these are my inspiration for the doom maps I make.

Also I find it a kind of funny.

That’s the point. Something beautiful to aspire to play later on. Something to keep in mind.

I don't think that would work out in the way that you think it will, maybe if you recommended Sunlust (or anything that had all skills properly implemented by both of the authors)  But I don't believe Sunder has skill levels implemented.  Some people like to play wads that are overwhelmingly difficult, but if a wad isn't fun, most people will just stop playing.  I personally have never had the desire to play overly difficult wads, I have played some of Ribbiks's work but I don't have a desire to play sunder nor Dimentions.  Both scythes would be better wads, not only for beginners, but for what you want.  Scythe's 2nd half is one of the best experiences.  And the first 15 maps are also quite good.  Scythe 2 is almost perfect all around, but it's final episodes also hold your feet to the fire.

Doom: Damnation is what you are looking for.

Also, Sinergy and Switcheroom are great Ultimate Doom mapsets that are often overlooked.
Way better on depicting the way Id did than the proper the way Id Did Serie
The Invasion is old, but is pretty good, too. Leaning more into TNT adventure style maps, but whith a great haunted moon and invasion theme going on.

I haven't played haunted moon base, so my recommendation are general.

If you like masochist megawads:

EDIT: oh, wow, do you mean e1 from Doom1? Base Ganimede... maybe

 Sinergy

Seconding Sinergy. Also if you end up digging that, make sure you check out Pathogen, a doom 1 episode by the same creator. Also because it somehow hasn't been recommended, Base Ganymede is also pretty spot on for what you're looking for.

I don't know whether to correct you on how Haunted Moon Base isn't a wad or congratulate you on a good joke.

Struggle is based on a demonic invasion of tech bases.

It goes on to have more spacey levels, and the combat is more frantic than Doom1, but may be worth a look. I really like it.

Deathless by Jimmy. "Very vanilla" megawad for Ultimate Doom. Episodes have their own themes instead of the usual Phobos, Deimos, Hell etc. Also try it's upcoming sequel, Earthless. It has 12 map demo available. Enjoyable stuff.

Enthusiastically seconded. I finished NEIS recently and count it one of the best megawads I've ever played. Yes, a jaw-dropping amount of ingenuity given the straight-up vanilla limitations but that's a kind of technical consideration. It has great set-pieces, incredible reconfiguring layouts, imaginative secrets; it's really fun. I was skeptical about playing a full Doom replacement since I think it needs more judicious monster usage than D2 to avoid clogging up the pace once the KDITD fodder roster is discarded.

Speaking specifically to the OP's desired atmosphere, I think NEIS ep 1 will have you well covered, but Derelict Vessel in ep 2 - the epitomy of the haunted hi-tech Shores of Hell style for me.
