Scythe *Sigh* Syke!

Yeah, like I said, MAP30 is essentially Plutonia's Go 2 It on steroids. I still think it is more interesting than just another Icon of Sin fight.

This thread got me to finally play Scythe for the first time too. I was having a great time until Map 28 personally. I don't understand how you make it to the end. I always end up starting to take the lethal crushing damage in the last hallway of the level and die a few feet away from the exit. But I don't get how you go faster.

This level could have been neat to play but the execution as is was really, really bad.

I only recently played Scythe for the first time and I totally share the sentiment. The final batch of maps, starting from MAP22 or so are, of course, difficult, but as the maps are short and concise, it’s not an issue. I like to be challenged.

But curse upon MAP28, which I tried beating for a time and ended up hating the whole concept. If MAP10 wasn’t such low-effort filler, I’d call MAP28 easily the worst map of the bunch. Now it’s debatable. I beat it, too, but only after I turned difficulty to HNTR. Edited later: it also occured that upon finishing MAP28, I started MAP29 with zero health. Pistol start time, then. Not that it mattered, I was PS’ing anyway. But still.

MAP30 I haven’t beaten, it’s clearly well above my skill level, even with saves. I wouldn’t call it a blemish in an otherwise great wad, but it’s certainly an exception. (To be fair, MAP29 wasn’t that small either).

Elaborate on map28

Wait, what? When I beat MAP28, I started MAP29 with full health but only the pistol.

EDIT: I just went back and noclip my way to the ending, and all the stuff I had picked up carried over to MAP29. What the fuck?

Sounds like you pulled off a death exit the first time, dying but still managing to cross the exit.

I've yet to actually play through MAP30 in its entirety, in my playthrough I just did the speedrun trick of rushing for the yellow key and climbing over the other gates as the yellow gate lowers.

Wow... Then MAP28 is simply impossible on UV, as even starting the level with health and armor maxed out is not enough to make it to the exit. I have to wonder if Erik Alm even bothered having it playtested to begin with.

Nah, it's possible, you just have to understand the quirks of Doom movement. Here's a run that finishes before the crusher damage begins, and goes for kills and secrets too:

I've been meaning to ask this and this thread seems a good enough place to do so... where does the music for map29 come from? I always liked that track.

It’s Symphony X, and I think the track is called Lady of the Snow (either that, or Winter’s Dream) from one of the late 90s albums (either Twilight in Olympus or the one before that, I can’t remember all of a sudden).

Edit: the other possible album is Divine Wings of Tragedy. Thanks, middle-agedness.

I've wanted to get into their music from their use in Alm's wads. Any good starting place?

I used to listen to them in the late 90s and early 00s, so I don’t know about their more recent stuff. Those two albums plus V and Odyssey (I think it was called) were great. The Damnation Game has couple of decent songs.

MAP28 is a great opportunity to practice movement skills, maybe even give SR50 a try (though it's not needed to finish in time)

The vid in Shepardus' post is from 4shockblast, but you don't need near his level of skill to consistently get out alive

One thing that helped for me was killing as many monsters as I could from the starting room so I wouldn't have to worry about them when the timer actually started. Yes, I realize how unhelpful that advice is to speedrunners.

I think Bigmacdavis has a video that I watched for map28. Scythe was one of the first pwads I played through after the original games (and certainly the hardest at that point) and really enjoyed having a different goal for that map. Took me 6-8 tries but I loved it.

I also enjoyed the challenge of map30, but I, like Shepardus above, cheated by hopping the gate to the end as the yellow gate was lowering. I want to go back and 100% it.
