nameht Posted November 30, 2021 (edited) Hello fellow DOOMers!! If you're new but also semi-experienced in doom map design, here are some tips that I think would help people who are starting out! Heads up, I mostly used tips from DoomKid's deathmatch map design tips, and I know thats pretty much different map design to regular DOOM, I think it still feels great! So without further ado, here we go! -Multiple ways to get to a certain area, rather than just PA > PB make more point to get to PB & vice versa. -Avoid dead ends, this ones sorta a no-brainer but making a player turn around in a spot that goes nowhere makes that spot useless so I'd reccommend avoiding them! -Smooth corners might seem strange when going for linear-style maps, but it feells nicer to circle strafe in that environment! -Hallways should be atleast 128 or 192 MU wide to avoid cramped areas, if an area is cramped, the fun is eliminated and players can't get to areas fast! -Avoiding doors, this ones a little strange but doors stop momentum and I feel that it's a core part of DOOm map design. After all, DOOM is about fast, pump-action! -You should probably give a player a weapon around where they spawn. I'd reccomend either SSG, Shotgun or Beserk! Hopefully, these tips help you with your map, and thanks for reading this short post! -Happy mapping ^^ Edited November 30, 2021 by nameht circle strafe 6 Quote Share this post Link to post
Ashurion Neonix Posted December 1, 2021 A little extra tip is to place small impassable lines around small pillars on walls and corners, and over small gaps in walls. (Don't do this for things larger than 16*16) This stops players from getting stuck on walls. While this is optional on single player maps, (look at sigil e5m6) you should always do this for Deathmatch. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
