Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (NES) "A Walk in the Town" midi pack for DOOM II

Recommended Posts

I've recently watched the Angry Video Game Nerd's "Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde (NES) Revisited" episode as something to burn time on my last free day of work. I've barely heard of the game but throughout the Nerd's review, I've noticed how similar the gameplay of that game is to a Stroller speedrun:
- You can only walk at a slow pace
- You can't attack anything a.k.a It's all Pacifist (with the exception of being able to kill harmless bees in the NES game)
- Everything is coming after you to kill you, and your only objective is to survive them and get to the end.

The game plays this repetitive, catchy track throughout this part a.k.a the Jekyll section, so I decided to make a midi pack that replaces ALL songs in Doom 2 with this one track, called "A Walk in the Town". Pretty simple stuff, actually. Just copied and pasted the same midi and renamed it to all of the doom song names, created a new wad with SLADE 3 and inserted all these midis. Probably not the most effective way to do this but it's my first time, so yeah. I've uploaded it to /idgames and I hope it gets accepted.
Jekyll.zip
This contains the wad and its txt file.

But, why?

Why is right, I've never been able to understand why some people cram midi tracks from games like Megaman, Final Fantasy or Castlevania in their maps, it feels ridiculously out of place in a game like Doom;  or Heretic and Hexen, for that matter.

There are some Castlevania tracks that work well, but I perfer new covers of the songs as opposed to just ripping them straight from their respective games. I just don't really understand why anyone would want to replace the music on every map with the same song. At least it isn't D_RUNNIN, otherwise I'd be tearing Daniel here a new Hyde!!

Primarily as a wad to use during Stroller speedruns, which makes sense if you read the quote above.
The whole idea of this is to use this wad with any iWAD or PWAD to have any level contain this music, since Stroller speedruns aren't done in full D2ALL runs (all 32 maps played in one sitting), that means it's mostly individual map runs.

Ugh, I detest that stupid track, it's the worst Doom "song" ever. And to think they assigned it to the very first map.

I need to get Rolling Rocks, a white coat, a pair of glasses, beat up Bugs Bunny and a basement full of shitty games to play this WAD. Good one btw

I released the Freedoom 2 Midi Pack over at ModDB awhile ago. Its MAP01 song is freaking awesome by comparison if you ever need a super easy replacement. Theres also MTWID was well. Both work on all source ports.

Just downloaded it, will try it out later. BTW, is that character in your avatar Strago, from Final Fantasy VI?

Yes, that is FF6 Strago Magus because I identity as a Blue Mage. I use General Kale from Willow on my ModDB avatar.

Best Final Fantasy game IMO. Square Enix needs to get off their ass and give this gem the remake it deserves, it's long, long overdue. Don't think it'll happen anytime soon, though.
