how do i do online coop

so my friend just got all the classic doom games and i want to do coop with him for his first time play though but how do i get a gzdoom online coop server going

You should use Zandronum, ZDaemon or Odamex, not GZDoom. Here's a tutorial:
 

 

If you want to start a Zandronum server, it's possible using Doom Explorer but the most reliable method is using TSPG to host: https://allfearthesentinel.net/

Do you know if it's possible to use TSPG to host a custom WAD? I would assume it'd need to be uploaded for the session.

You definitely can! When you make an account, use the “uploads” section to get the wad hosted, then as you’re starting your server, just make sure to add it (has to be uploaded before you start the server, just to be clear.)
