ClackL Posted December 22, 2021 Can someone tell me why the gzdoom builder said it was gonna delete all my files? 0 Share this post Link to post
Borg Posted December 22, 2021 Did you try posting this over at zdoom.org? 0 Share this post Link to post

What GZDB version were you using? Since your first call to action was to delete GZDB outright it will be difficult if not impossible to reproduce your situation. You could have posted GZbuilder.cfg as that would show the parameters set by GZDoom Builder. 1 Share this post Link to post
Dragonfly Posted December 23, 2021 (edited) Never heard of this... "functionality" before; but surprised nobody's suggested moving onto the successor of GZDB, Ultimate Doom Builder. In my numerous years of using doom tools, not one application has ever threatened to delete all files. The closest is the now-ancient XWE corrupting a WAD I was working on, but that application is very old and instead of XWE most authors use SLADE3 to manage WAD contents. Gez Posted December 23, 2021 (edited) 19 hours ago, ClackL said: Can someone tell me why the gzdoom builder said it was gonna delete all my files? The message appears in the exception handler. https://github.com/m-x-d/GZDoom-Builder/blob/b3442f4f5e6e0f3a864ad925ee8fb6e8671c6d6b/Source/Core/Windows/ExceptionDialog.cs Long story short: there was a problem (for whatever reason) that the program couldn't solve on its own. As a result it displayed an error message. Due to the programmer having a weird sense of humor, the error message is introduced by a sentence chosen randomly from a long list of jokes about computer bugs and Doom-related stuff. So it was not actually deleting all files. Edited December 23, 2021 by Gez 6 Share this post Link to post
Dragonfly Posted December 23, 2021 Well, that's certainly a questionable way to do error messaging... 0 Share this post Link to post
ClackL Posted December 23, 2021 (edited) im using latest version of gzdb also it scared me saying it was gonna delete files so the creator of gzdb is bad cuz he makes some bad jokes that scare people Edited December 23, 2021 by ClackL misspelled something 0 Share this post Link to post
ClackL Posted December 23, 2021 it said "Now deleting all files. Goodbye" and that scared me super much 0 Share this post Link to post
ClackL Posted December 23, 2021 So like why does the creator make these scary jokes though? 0 Share this post Link to post
inkoalawetrust Posted December 24, 2021 (edited) Well it's not hard to figure out that the error message titles are not serious, almost all of them read like very obvious jokes like "You picked up the Random Exception." or "This function is only available in the retail version of GZDoom Builder". Besides, even if GZDB did ever actually delete all the files in system in any circumstance. Then you wouldn't be using it because nobody would've recommended it to you or anyone else in the first place. Its like these things should be super super super obvious but somehow we end up seriously explaining these things because somewhere, someone will see that error message, freak out and then think ''I should sign up to DoomWorld and tell others!'' jk. Just being in jest ofcourse. I can imagine that, especially if you aren't tech savvy, such messages will throw you off. The creator assumes people using that software will get the joke, which is a very slippery slope to rely on. Then again tech savvy people wouldn't normally download a software called GZDoom Builder. So its anyone's guess. Adding a warning ruins the joke, but not making any indication that your files aren't actually deleted isn't great either. 0 Share this post Link to post

Dragonfly Posted December 28, 2021 I think if you need to censor the word stupid as you type it, you're far too young to be here... 🤔 4 Share this post Link to post
