Chipper35 Posted December 24, 2021 Sorry if this is listed here (or elsewhere)......just couldn't seem to find it: Is there a Master list of names for the textures/flats contained within OTEX?? I am just trying to do random spot-checks to make sure I installed it for UDB correctly and that what I am seeing is actually 'new' textures. I haven't spent much time looking at the default names of textures that come with UDB, so....y'know............. I think everything is fine......but just trying to make certain I am right. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Borg Posted December 24, 2021 If I'm not mistaken, default textures come with the IWAD you are using. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Bauul Posted December 25, 2021 If you open OTEX.wad or OTEX.pk3 in Slade you'll be able to see the full list of textures in there. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Chipper35 Posted December 25, 2021 Doom 2................... the zip file becomes a cfg file........ but: I'm downloading the 'WAD' file from the OTEX site. Maybe I just need to back away for a while. This is so frustrating. I am just trying to get someone to give me the name of a few FLATS as they show up when you are working in UDB....that's all.......so I can see if its OTEX textures showing up or stuff that is just a part of Doom 2. I really think I'm trying to jump ahead too much. I swear to God, I think I need to freakin' pay someone to tutor me on this stuff a bit. I swear some days I don't know the freaking difference between a PWAD, an IWAD or my head! Let's try this.....in UDB.......what should be the total number of textures at my disposal, if I installed it correctly......? Right now (grand total) I have about 527 total textures at my disposal. Are some of those OTEX or just the the standard Doom 2 package?? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Chipper35 Posted December 25, 2021 Beggars can't be choosers......I get it: but........this is NOT a complex question........... Roughly-speaking.........approximately HOW MANY TEXTURES will OTEX provide one to work with? I started (as suggested to me) the 8-part mapping tutorial, and here I am trying to jump ahead!! I honestly think I need to step away for a little while. I am deeply frustrated. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Bauul Posted December 25, 2021 (edited) Ok, well first of all chill a bit please. Your original question (a master list of all OTEX textures) isn't that straightforward: that doesn't generally exist outside of just opening the wad itself and looking. However to your second question (are you loading it properly), the answer would be no. OTEX has over a thousand new textures in, and they all start with "O" something. Also they will appear in a folder called "OTEX" in your texture browser. When you create a new map in UDB, there'll be a screen with a button that lets you "add resources". Make sure you select that, click the "wad" format tab (or the pk3 format if you got that) and select the file you downloaded (OTEX.wad or OTEX.pk3). It should appear on the list of loaded resources alongside the IWAD of your choice (usually Doom2.wad). Edited December 25, 2021 by Bauul 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Chipper35 Posted December 25, 2021 OK.....lets try this: this indicates that I've 'added' OTEX properly. So, of course, I draw a room........go into 3d mode, click on a wall.........and only 527 textures are there for me to use.........AND I am unsure if any of those are from OTEX........... it seems to me that my list of textures has grown......but I'm not sure. See.......so I just need the name of a few flats........to see if those flats showing in that list are OTEX flats or just DOOM2.wad flats. Again: I think my list of textures has grown......but I'm not certain. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Chipper35 Posted December 25, 2021 You keep using the words WAD or PK3.......but the only file format I'm seeing on my end is ZIP or CFG.......see? On the OTEX site, I select "UDB WAD".....great, fine. It downloads zipped.......which contains 2 cfg files and one README.txt file.......... nothing seems to TRANSFORM into a WAD file. See my problem? I gotta unplug, man. I'm tired and frustrated. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Borg Posted December 25, 2021 OK. One newbie to another. When you set up your builder to begin mapping, you have to select a format. Then you select a resource. That resource (Doom2) contains the textures that you call default. It is called an IWAD. It contains the textures that you start with. 527 sounds about right. To add textures to your wad, which will be a PWAD, watch this video. Doomkid explains it perfectly: That is how you add textures one at a time. Now, to include an entire texture pack to your wad, others will have to chime in as I don't know how to do that. Nor would I want to. I use textures from GothicTX.wad but I only add the ones I want using the method Doomkid explains. Adding the whole texture pack will make your wad too big. Too much overhead and confusing when you search sidedefs. I hope this helps. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Borg Posted December 25, 2021 Baby steps. As you move along, the jargon starts to make sense. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

See my problem? I gotta unplug, man. I'm tired and frustrated. I see what you're doing. You are downloading an OTEX configuration file for UDB, which is simply a way for UDB to split up the textures into nice categories. You aren't actually downloading the textures themselves at all. You need to download the textures. The CFG file is entirely optional. You can get the textures in a .wad format here: https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/graphics/otex_1_1 (this is the first link on the OTEX download page). Download this file, then when you create a new map in UDB, click "add resources" and point to this file. Then they'll appear in your UDB. SiMpLeToNiUm Posted December 25, 2021 From the OTEX website: The green links are the ones that contain the textures themselves. They are split into WAD format and PK3 format for OTEX because of reasons outside of the scope of this thread and likely outside of the patience of all who would be involved in such a discussion. Explaining what each format is and why you might use one or the other is also out of the scope of this thread, but since you mentioned that you need a WAD, choose the first green link to get the textures themselves organized in WAD format. The red links are the configuration files, which come packed neatly into an archive file for convenience. These are NOT the textures. They are different files which create organization (folders in the Texture Browser) within Ultimate Doom Builder for the purposes of categorizing the textures when you add them into the map you're editing. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted December 25, 2021 11 hours ago, Chipper35 said: Roughly-speaking.........approximately HOW MANY TEXTURES will OTEX provide one to work with? https://doomwiki.org/wiki/OTEX Quote OTEX features 2624 textures made from 4042 patches, and 1309 flats. It provides a SWITCHES lump defining 26 new texture pairs, and an ANIMATED lump defining 77 new animations spread between 48 for textures and 29 for flats. Some of the switch textures are animated in their "ON" state. There are 51 skies, most of which are 1024-texel wide (one is 512-texel wide), and all of which are 200-, 240-, or 256-texel tall. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
