xdude_gamer Posted December 30, 2021 Holy Hell Revealed was considered on the wiki to contain the most monsters ever at over 41,000. Well, that's been topped by Cosmogenesis [MAP05], at 74,774. (JESUS CHRIST) This number has never been achieved in a serious manner for a DOOM wad ever, as far as I know. So this should probably be addressed on the wiki, or at least in some other fashion. 6 Quote Share this post Link to post
Dusty_Rhodes Posted December 30, 2021 Wow 75,000 monsters. That's mind blowing to both map for and play. The skill required for either must be crazy. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
DannyMan Posted December 30, 2021 Jesus Christ, that's a lot of enemies. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Captain POLAND Posted December 30, 2021 I couldn't add it to my list though because not all of the levels in that WAD have all of their monsters listed on the wiki, last time I checked. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Maribo Posted December 30, 2021 Worth noting that this is a case like Deus Vult, where MAP05 of the wad is the first 4 maps all pieced together into a single one. Ancalagon has also done runs for the individual maps, but not the combined one. Most likely because it would be near three hours long. 7 Quote Share this post Link to post
Shepardus Posted December 30, 2021 I think Antaresian Reliquary MAP31 also has more monsters than Holy Hell Revealed, but not as many as Cosmogenesis. Cosmogenesis is also a good demonstration of how much a REJECT table can help with performance in extreme cases - the initial versions without the REJECT table were unplayable in the combined form (MAP05), which is why the split versions (MAP01-04) exist. With the REJECT table, however, it runs surprisingly well in dsda-doom and PrBoom+. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Cammy Posted December 30, 2021 It's generally accepted that it's a joke wad, but I'd still be remiss not to mention how thoroughly this record is shattered by Experiencing Nirvana MAP17... 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

Murdoch Posted December 30, 2021 Sounds like a painful slog. Do any.of these maps run ok? 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Shepardus Posted December 30, 2021 Cosmogenesis is less of a slog than Holy Hell (Revealed), less painful than Okuplok's map (Okuplok's notoriously stingy with health pickups, Cosmogenesis significantly less so), and more enjoyable than either in my opinion. There aren't many videos of the WAD on YouTube, and even fewer that aren't TAS or with OP weapon mods, so if you'd rather watch someone else play than play it yourself, check out Ancalagon's demos of the individual parts on DSDA. I think his Twitch VODs have expired unfortunately, or I would link those too. They're for maps 1-4, not MAP05 (the one with 74k enemies), but MAP05 is just 1-4 combined into a single map so if you watch the demos for maps 1-4 back to back you can imagine it's MAP05. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
Maribo Posted December 30, 2021 If by "run ok" you mean whether they tank your FPS or whatever, I'll back up Shepardus saying that Cosmogenesis runs surprisingly well thanks to the REJECT table. I get some stutters in the more demanding areas, but it's mostly playable with my hardware, even @ 1080p using software renderer, and you can always lower the res and change to OpenGL for significant boosts. The only other issue I've encountered is that Map05 takes a solid 30 seconds to load (for me at least) when launching DSDA-Doom, but after that it's just like playing them individually, performance-wise. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
