4shockblast Posted January 1, 2022 (edited) It's that time of year again! And this time, we're closing out a positively insane year for demos. In 2020, we beat the record count for demos by a fairly slim margin (4910 vs 2011's 4157). In 2021, we absolutely smashed all previous demo counts with over 8 thousand demos recorded in a year. That's over 22 demos average per day, and we don't even get the leap year advantage 2020 benefited from. Whether it's latent effects from Karl Jobst's and other speedrun analysis videos, the development of DSDA-Doom reducing barrier to entry to demo recording to the bare minimum, the still ongoing pandemic, all of the above, or something else, demo activity is on another level this year. But that's hardly all. This year featured crazy highlights such as: The highest demo count ever by a single player in a year, achieved by @Bdubzzz, as far as I can tell (1000 demos, a whopping 74% of all of Dubzzz' demos on DSDA). The previous top count from what I could tell seems to have been 809 by @Cyberdemon531. The most massive demo month yet seen; with 902 demos beaten out of a total of 1000 choices, and 55 players (an average of 30 demos per day), won by Dubzzz (the other demo month this year was, incidentally, also won by Dubzzz). An astounding number of new players; I don't know of the stats on this since DSDA doesn't track it, but at least anecdotally, it seems the number of new names that pop up on DSDA pages and the DoomSpeedDemos channel from 2021 is unlike any other year. Even more awesome is just how many of these players have stuck around, very different from the usual "just submit one or two E1M1 PBs and never come back again" kind of thing in the past. As such, welcome to: @Abelicio, @aconfusedhuman, @akolai, @AxeL, @Billa, @Blip, @BoxY, @Colossus, @cryoniq, @Daniel, the NCR Veteran, @Decay, @Dogmachine, @General Roasterock, @Gosu_Noob, @El juancho, @KineticBeverage, @kvothesixstring, @liveincity, @Maribo, @Master Medi, @megasphere308, @Meowgi and his cat Petrie, @mhrz, @Mikolah, @Napsalm, @Obscursed, @PBeGood4, @Professor Soundman, @RockyGaming4725, @Soul_Runner, and @Spendoragon (some of you started in 2020, but were mostly active in 2021)! Sorry if I missed anyone, hard to find all the new names. :p On the opposite end of the spectrum, welcome back to some temporarily or newly unretired veteran players, who dusted off their ball mice, and returned with some new demos this year: @Altima, @dew, @doomdaniel95, @skogsto09, @Jonathan, and @Zahid And last but not least, speaking of new players, this year we saw the first ever demo from a non-human animal ever in the history of Doom runs (maybe even speedruns in general?), that being the aforementioned Petrie. It's really a testament to Doom and this community to see continued speedrun activity from so many veteran and newcomer players! But now for the actual demos; as usual, I will aim to pick stuff that was not mentioned in the Cacowards to shine some spotlight on other cool stuff. Normally, I've made these in a simpler list format, but I think it's cool to add some comments to demos you pick (like this cool thread from j4rio noted by rd recently), so I'll add some of my comments to all of my picks and encourage others to do the same! Of course, it's totally optional anyway, I'm not your boss. :^) Feel free to mention any favorite events and happenings from this year in Doom speedruns as well! My picks: Spoiler 2002: A Doom Odyssey E1M2 Pacifist in 48:48 by @kmc (demo) You know it's a good pacifist run where you have absolutely no idea what's going on unless you read the textfile. Really goes to show that sometimes, the best pacifist approaches are the most ridiculous. :) Alien Vendetta Map 01 UV-Max in 1:01 by @TomatoTom (demo, video) I've never tried this particular max myself, but as a map 1 maxer, I can tell just by watching how many frustrating fails would happen to SSG or SG shots not doing enough damage or not targeting or other nonsense. Because of that,iIt's incredibly difficult and frustrating to produce clean-looking runs on maps like this, so kudos on that! Doom E1M1 Reality Pacifist in 0:08.97 by @depr4vity (demo, video) The E1M1 madman at it again. Take the precision of doing 8 seconds on E1M1, and add the pure RNG factor of praying nothing ever shoots, and you have one fucked up IL. Notably, it's pretty much a perfect Lemmings run too; I don't even think anything takes damage in this run. The only question I have is after getting 8 seconds on E1M1 30 times, can you even feel anything anymore? :^) Doom 2 Map 18 UV-Speed in 0:12 by @ZeroMaster010 (demo, video) Of course, this run had to be mentioned; Zero-Master further and further finding ever more ridiculous approaches to go through barriers you're not supposed to; this time, an actual solid door. What has speedrunning come to? :^) Noye Map 09 UV-Max/Tyson in 0:24 by @kraflab (demo) YOLO berserking two HKs out of four, who would think that anyone would go for something so crazy. Not me at any rate. :) Perdition's Gate Map 16 UV-Max in 2:59 by @NightTerror (demo) It's like one of two demos this year for perdgate that weren't by me (or didn't involve me in some other way). You know I had to mention it. :^) But anyway, it's also just a solid run; there's not a lot of max minute barriers left to beat for perdgate, at least from my analysis, so it's good to see any. It's also quite an action-packed map I think, one of the better maps in perdgate with one of the better midis IMO. And yes, NT, it really is better than sc05. :^) Scythe maps 27 (1:07:56) and 29 (1:42:50) Tysons by @j4rio (demo for 27, demo for 29) I think over the past few years, the hardcore Tysoning advances from j4rio, Aqfaq, and other Tyson experts have almost been taken for granted, but it's truly astounding to see how far this artform has gone. I think these two runs exemplify the level of ingenuity and cheese expertise needed for the top-level runs in this category, and it's quite a marvel to see such complex maps totally deconstructed this way. The runs feature really cool strategizing spanning pretty much the full breadth of Tysoning strats, like tactical monster luring, bullet farming, AV blast damage abuse, stuck cybs, and a bit of good old-fashioned yoloing here and there too. Shoutouts to the textfiles too, it's really cool to read an in-depth description of the routing that went into the runs. Scythe map 31 secret exit Nomo in 0:07.97 by @aconfusedhuman (demo, video) Confused has went on one of the fastest trajectories from complete Doom newcomer to top-tier movement expert I've ever seen in the community, and this run is a clear demonstration of the level of mastery he has reached. It may be just under 8 seconds long and basically just a straight line to the exit, but this run is no joke; from personal experience, the path from 8.1x and even 8.0x to 7 here is extremely tough. E1M1 is ezpz compared to this one tbh; this run is truly peak nomoing. Sunlust Map 01 Stroller in 1:36 by @Bdubzzz (demo) I may be somewhat biased here since this was one of my bounties, but this really is a non-trivial map to complete on Stroller, even if it is just map 1 of the wad. There's no trickery you can rely on, and slow approaches are as much of a struggle as the bold yolo tactics taken by this run, as there is quite a lot of opposition to deal with on this map. In any case, I will always stan for Stroller, and IMO, runs like this show that it doesn't have to be a boring meme run. It may be no less exciting than any other category. :) Toilet of the Gods Map 04 UV-Max by @Lucky_Edie (demo, video) As a fan of platforming myself, I have to mention this run. It may not be the fastest completion of this map possible, but as much as I appreciate this map's visuals and midi, and even the idea behind it, it is a nightmare and a half to complete any run of this at all, and it's awesome to see someone give it even a table fill. Of course, it had to be from probably the only other person other than me who would ever consider running this map. :) As usual, I'll include a personal pick, for which I'll choose a demo that I don't really expect anyone to mention: Spoiler Perdition's Gate Map 23 Stroller in 4:34 by @GarrettChan and me (demo, video) I was thinking to pick one of my ILs, but then I decided that this was a far more worthy pick. This year was my first foray co-op demos, something I always wanted to do but never really tried because of the lag concerns plus having to use Crispy Doom. Having tried it, it's been really fun and opened up a totally new path to explore for future demo recording opportunities; all of the concerns proved really minor in the end. :) Out of all the runs, this one remains as the one that's most memorable for me at least. It's the first Stroller co-op run I'm pretty sure, and it was super fun to map this one out and execute it, plus the strategies it relies on are really fun. Hopefully, 2022 will bring more co-op from GarrettChan and me (and hopefully others!). Spoiler For anyone interested, the IL I was going to go for myself is AVJ map 20 NM-Speed. For me, this year has definitely been the year of the AVJ, and I feel like there are so many runs I did that relied on ridiculous and sometimes pretty absurd AVJs. This is one of the ones that I think was more nuts from this year; it is really tough to manage those mid-air jumps backwards, and the last vilejump, surprisingly, is no cakewalk either. kvothesixstring Posted January 1, 2022 (edited) Spoiler Firstly, thanks for mentioning me. Getting into Doom Speedrunning has been a big benefit to me this year. From just giving me something external to focus on that is within my control to improve, to the community providing me with friends and friendly competition, Doom Speedrunning has made this last year far better than it had any right being for me. I may not have the best movement, know all the tricks, or have the best combat efficiency but I think I bring one thing to the table and that is blind determination. When I have wanted a demo, I ran it until I got it. Even if that took 18,997 attempts... Some of the demos that I found particularly impressive this year. Spoiler Community Chest 2 Map 24 (The Mucus Flow) UV Max in 17:14.89 by @Vile c224m1714.zip Vile took what seemed to me as already impressive demo and shaved nearly 5 minutes off of it. Watching him route it and fine tune the run on stream was truly educational and proves why he has been and still is a pillar of the Doom Speedrunning community. Stardate 20x7 Map 06 Pacifist in 00:14.69 by @Gosu_Noob st706p14.zip Gosu is a man after my own heart, he finds a trick and no matter how cursed it is, if it can be implemented into a time save in a run, he will do it. Death exits, double AVJ and just faceplanting RNG. This is a RUN. Rush UV Max D2All in 1:44:02 by @Master Medi rud2allm10402.zip Medi has been a man of singular focus this year. A D2all is not an insignificant feat, it takes patience and perseverance that not everyone has. Watching his attempts this year has been a treat and I was so glad that he got his exit. Ancient Aliens Map 16 Pacifist in 03:27.34 by @Napsalm aa16p327.zip Napsalm has been a good friend and great speedrunner this year. I am especially proud of this effort. 16 is not a map most people would think to try to run pacifist, lots of hitscan, tight corridors, and just a rather long run. However Naps wanted it and went after it. Cheers mate. Sunlust Map 17 UV Speed in 00:58.54 by @Maribosl17-058.zip Maribo is a runner with a wide range of skills, from pacifist to UV max. This run however is where I took notice, the two consecutive AVJs at the start and the casual stroll past the cyber were enough to earn my respect. I look forward to seeing more from Maribo. Vanguard Map 03 Pacifist in 00:20.17 by @kmc vg03p020 (2).zip Who doesn't love a good void glide? KMC has been extremely helpful to me in my growth as a speedrunner and this run is a good example of why. He has control over monster manipulation, great movement, and a cool trick. If that's not what makes a notable demo I don't know what is. There are more runs that I was impressed to see and I may add more later but this list will do for now. Here is the demo I am most happy with that I did this year. Spoiler Valiant 09 UV Speed in 02:18.23va09-218.zip This is the highest effort tablefill I have done. I really loved this map when I played it casually and it was really confusing that it didn't have a UV Speed demo. So I routed one out, I learned a lot from the experience and I think this run made me improve the most of any I did this year. There are jumps, thing runs, linedef skips, AVJs, surprisingly annoying platforming and a fair amount of combat for a UV speed. I didn't get the double AVJ I had planned on at the last key room with the rising pillars but it didn't lose much time because I was immediately yeeted out of the pit anyway. I learned a lot by routing and attempting this run. Edited January 1, 2022 by kvothesixstring 18 Quote Share this post Link to post
Maribo Posted January 1, 2022 I'm certain I'll come back with more, but these came to mind from my cursory glances at some DSDA pages:Italo-Doom Map01 UV-Pacifist in 1:14 by @4shockblast I might be a bit biased because I came up with the AVJs used in this run, but the run feels just as silly as the map itself... It's so fitting. And the platforming jump at the end is so smooth. Vanguard Map01 UV-Pacifist in 0:23 by @kvothesixstring This jump is downright awful to do even in NoMo (imo), the run is essentially resetting every 10 or so seconds to get one chance to line it up (with imps and pinkies running around near the jump spot), and kvothe grinded this for 19k attempts. It's just dedication. There's time to save still but man... who would want to? Dimensions Map31 UV-Pacifist in 0:58 by @Gosu_Noob I originally was grinding for this a while ago and eventually gave up and shifted my priorities to the UV-Speed run after seeing David's NM-Speed run. Gosu apparently had the same vision and never stopped. Very cool run, great to see the first Pacifist for Dimensions. :) Stardate 20x6 Map01 UV-Pacifist by @kmc This jump fucking sucks too and it was really satisfying to see it done outside of danne's TAS. Rush D2ALL in 1:44:02 by @Master Medi Can't leave it out. Dedication to the slaughter dream. Some misc shoutouts: I don't have any specifics, but it feels like every time I turn around, there's a new sick TAS from @RockyGaming4725 or @almostmatt1 waiting. It's so cool to see.@BiZ is killing it by becoming the designated UV-Fast runner, or at least a counterpart to Dubz. @Decay's quest to table fill Bourg has been a treat to watch, as has @ZeroMaster010's effort on bringing down Sunder UV-Maxes. @Ancalagon and @David Asaad's fight over the Dimensions Map01 Max was very very fun to watch. @Andromeda has done their best to drop a steady stream of high quality Pacifist and UV-Speed runs this year, I don't know if I could pick a single one but they're prime watching material (and most are 2 minutes or less!) 24 Quote Share this post Link to post
cryoniq Posted January 1, 2022 (edited) Thank you for mentioning me and other newcomers. It's a pleasure to be in that great and nice community. I also honestly did laugh after "just submit one or two E1M1 PBs and never come back again". As there are way too many levels and demos that can be beaten. Here comes short story (sort of). I started to record demo attempts in the september 2021 which was a "beat 1000 table fillers month". And I actually liked it. It's fun to grind maps for perfect results and also very satisfying when you actually beat the record (or just map itself if it's too hard). Some time before I did some TAS demos but that stuff was ugly. For those who can't understand the spirit of competition I have only one advice - jusy go and try. Seriously, it's fun. I was that guy who never really got into that. But the last demo month actually pushed me into this and I'm glad that I tried. Speaking about personal demo picks - the most notable ones are (probably) already mentioned but I also want to pick Hell Revealed 2 UV-Max D2ALL by @NightTerror. As @kvothesixstring said D2ALLs take patience and perseverance that not everyone has. Outstanding work! Some other picks and shoutouts: @Daerik - for outstanding dedication and grinding really difficult maps such as Stardate 20X7 Map09, Criticality, Entropy, and even D2ALL of Going Down. There are more demos by him but those were already mentioned, for example, on cacowards page. @Ancalagon - for all Cosmogenesis demos, superior works on NoSP series, Bastion of Chaos UV-Max, etc. Many more to be done I guess :) @KineticBeverage - for current WR of dimensions map03. He's grinding that map for sub 12 minutes time. He also has more sick demos. Edited January 1, 2022 by cryoniq typos...sorry for that 18 Quote Share this post Link to post
almostmatt1 Posted January 1, 2022 Born too late to explore Earth, too early to explore space, but just in time to witness 8000 Doom demos in one year. :-) A lot of my favourite moments of the year have been mentioned already, like the Rush, Going Down & Hell Revealed 2 D2Alls, but something very awesome was Zero-Master beating all Plutonia UV-Max IL's in one post. Also, can't forget that Loopers 17:29 Doom 2 UV-Speed record happened! I've also really enjoyed seeing @RockyGaming4725 get into TASing and get good fast, keep up the good work! 19 Quote Share this post Link to post
Meowgi Posted January 2, 2022 (edited) There are LOTS of great demos mentioned already. In an effort not to repeat those already mentioned, I'll focus on what was my favorite part of this year: The summer of Ancient Aliens Pacifist runs. @Andromeda and @Billa seemed to take an interest in filling the (mostly barren) ancient aliens pacifist table, and their efforts influenced many runners to submit pacifist runs for various maps in the wad. I wonder if this "event" caused a few of these runners to become interested in Doom speedrunning in the first place :) There were almost 50 demos submitted for Ancient Aliens in the Pacifist category between July and September, by runners such as: @Andromeda @Billa @kvothesixstring @Napsalm @Gosu_Noob @4shockblast @Daerik @Colossus @Tobby_Happy @NoisyVelvet @Maribo as well as myself. Some of my favorite picks that came from this buzz were as follows: Spoiler All of the table filling done by @Billa, as I believe their runs were the progenitor that sparked a lot of the interest in this little shindig to begin with. Ancient Aliens MAP17 Pacifist in 0:50 by @Napsalm - Although this wasn't Naps' first demo, I believe it was quite early on in his Doom speedrunning career, and one I was around to watch my streamed attempts for. Very good times. Ancient Aliens MAP23 Pacifist in 3:05 by @kvothesixstring - Kvothe made several route improvements that shaved over a minute off of the previous time for this run. Another set of attempts I enjoyed watching on stream. Ancient Aliens MAP14 Pacifist in 0:58 by @Daerik - One, because Daerik Pacifists are a rare treat, but also because it seemed to be one of the hardest maps to route for the category. Which leads me to my final pick... My favorite demo that came from this buzz was hands-down Ancient Aliens MAP14 Pacifist in 0:34 by @4shockblast. It took me 1376 attempts to get a single exit on this map, which came out to 54 seconds. I continued to put in attempts to bring the time down with a final total of 3176 attempts before giving it up. 4shock continued the grind and saved an entire whole twenty seconds off my time. Watching the demo, things look pretty straight forward, but trust me when I say this run is absolutely F-U-C-K-E-D! I only began playing Doom again back in April of this year, and my first submitted speed demo was run on May 11th. I've absolutely loved the journey of experiencing Doom through going fast and am ecstatic that there are so many new runners just like myself this year. I'm more than excited for what the future holds for Doom Speedrunning and wish everyone smooth runs and blessed RNG in 2022. Edited January 2, 2022 by Meowgi 18 Quote Share this post Link to post
RockyGaming4725 Posted January 2, 2022 (edited) Thanks for mentioning me, it was fun to get into running source and the TAS side of Doom. I've met some really great people in the Doom community the past few months. Since there are many great RTA demos listed, I thought I'd leave some TASes here :) All links are videos, unless no video exists that I'm aware of Doom Episode 1 UV Speed in 3:08 by @ZeroMaster010, had to mention this TAS, it makes E1M5 look like it's being played on the GBA port and E1M8's instant rocket glide is also very cool. E1M6 features a fence clip and a linedef skip at the start, then uses a shotgunner to stop the door from being closed on the way back, impressive considering XDRE doesn't offer brute forcing for linedef skips (yet, how's that fork going Matt?) Doom E1M1 UV Speed TAS in 7.74 by @almostmatt1 and @alps, just an absolutely outstanding TAS to watch :) Doom 2 Map 2 NoMo in 11.51 by @alps, again another nice TAS Scythe Episode 1 UV Max Co-op in 2:43 by @Dimon12321 a very chaotic and fun watch Doom E1M1 UV Max in 18.97 by @almostmatt1 another E1M1 demo from Matt, another great TAS E1M8 NoMo in 14.29 by myself and @almostmatt1 which uses a new void glide I accidentally discovered to save quite a chunk of time over the previous TAS record, E1M8 NoMo in 21.97 by @Dimon12321 (which would have been officially listed if it were made two months later - it's a great TAS!) Matt built a 14.77 soon after he found about the glide which is worth a watch as well. Another one of my own demos, which coincidentally has a void glide as well, Doom E4M6 NoMo (Co-op) in 21.86. E4M6 has already been done without monsters in a co-op tas by @ZeroMaster010, but this ends up being faster with a different void glide being used. The switch was tricky to press, I needed to shoot the player and brute force the tic of the glide itself so that I could press the switch on the very next frame. There are of course many other TASes I would mention but I don't want to this to get too long - make sure to check out all these TASer's demos! I'd also like to give a quick thanks to Matt for all sorts of help with my TASes and questions. Edited January 2, 2022 by RockyGaming4725 Spelling 18 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gosu_Noob Posted January 2, 2022 (edited) First I just wanted to say thank you for the mentions above, and for welcoming me into this community. While I have played doom since it came out, I have only been captivated by speedrunning for about 2 years, and only started running myself about 5 months ago. I am the definition of a noob and consider myself lucky to be in a highly competitive and decorated community. My greatest asset as mentioned before, is my willingness to grind all the RNG out of a run, regardless of how many attempts it takes to find that perfect seed. In terms of runs and runners that I would like to point out: @Zddastan Very.... very quietly put together some unbelievable runs which need to get more attention. lv24p3246.zip By the time I started looking at doom speedrunning, I was all too familiar with the Karl Jobst video, as well as Looper and his command of this level. To see this record fall by someone who submitted his first demo in early 2020 is insane to me. lv24o031.zip While he's at it, I guess he thought he'd break the 31 second barrier on the same level with a nomo run. lv01p514.zip Three months later, he pushed the boundaries of Entryway, and leads me to believe we might even see 4.9x on this map in 2022. @Pleymo Once again, another runner who has been quietly crushing all of doom with 31 iwad records in 2021. pl27str139.zip A hat tip to strollers everywhere, what kind of a madman strolls Anti-Christ?!?! lv22p045.zip One of the most cursed maps in doom even when you can kill all the chaingunners, but this was done pacifist and improving a 20 year old record by almost 20 seconds. Unbelievable. aa06p3989.zip by @Meowgi This was one of the first records I set in my very short time running, and it was the first time I was challenged by another runner. I took me roughly 1100 attempts to get my original record, and meowgi dispatched me after only ~250 attempts. I spent the next 2 weeks, and over 20,000 attempts trying to get this record back, and failed. There is no Refueling Base, Focus, or anything in Doom that can prepare you for the bullet-hell that this level is when running it pacifist. If there was a level I would challenge someone to run to actually punish them, this would be it. st01p054.zip by @kmc This run was mentioned before, but I will mention it again. Completely by accident, I ran into Kyle streaming on Twitch in October, and I had recently been running Stardate 20x6. I mentioned to this "unknown runner" I bumped into that Map 01 only has a pacifist exit that is TAS only, and challenged him to take a look at it. Within roughly 15 minutes a route very similar to the TAS had not only been figured out, but was beginning to be executed. 300 attempts later it was completed. The end resulting run is a marvel to look at, has one of the longest AVJ's I've ever seen in a run, and uses a route that would actually make the TAS FASTER. I didn't know who Kyle was when I bumped into him, but apparently he makes TAS only runs humanly possible. Again, a big thank you to everyone for welcoming me into this community and for the small notice my head-butting rng runs get. Shout outs to Daerik, Meowgi, Kvo, Prof, 4shock, and many many others for helping me out when I needed it, and for answering my unending questions sparked by my curious nature. 2021 Speedrunning summed up in one phrase? He helped me with the zero press too. Edited January 2, 2022 by Gosu_Noob 18 Quote Share this post Link to post
NightTerror Posted January 2, 2022 Two very strong runs I haven't seen mentioned: @Andromeda's Stardate 20x7 map 4 pacifist in 1:41 : Since TNT map 05 pacifist made it to the thread last year it's a no-brainer that this demo made it as well since this is a lot harder and more time-consuming than the "doom challenge deemed impossible". Not to mention the madman skipped the much needed soulsphere! @Coincident's Ultimate Doom Episode 3 UV-max in 17:21 : This run was so insane that it was only 6 seconds slower than his sum of best times before the start of the run. A perfect example run of how fast you can get when you practice a lot in-between sessions. 19 Quote Share this post Link to post
aconfusedhuman Posted January 2, 2022 (edited) Thanks for the mention. Getting into doom speedrunning and interacting with you all has made this one hell of a year, and I hope next year's demos will be even better than this one's :^) I'd like to thank @NightTerror, @4shockblast, @Looper, @JCD, and many others for all their generous help with runs :p Anyway, as for the runs: Scythe Map04 NoMo in 0:12 by the aforementioned 4shockblast. I tried this run myself months ago, and it was definitely very tricky with all the tight corners and turns. The path from low 13 to 12 is very tight, and I think is a nice watch for NoMo :) Plutonia Episode 2 NM100s in 27:34 by the aforementioned JCD. An exit on this is already hard enough due to map12, map32 and the seemingly easy but inconsistent map18, but getting 27 minutes is definitely on another level, as getting times like 8 minutes on map31 and 6:30 on map32 for example, is very very hard to guarantee in an NM movie run where anything can happen Sunlust Map 32 NM-Speed in 2:56 (intended route) by @David Asaad. Gotta love them NMs which rely on something not respawning. Definitely a cool watch, especially with the infamous AV fight. (4shocks 1:28 with a huge skip is also just as great :) ). As for my personal pick, it is: Ultimate Doom E1M1 UV-Pacifist in 0:08.94 by aconfusedhuman (me). This run has definitely lost it's buzz for me, unfortunately, but it is definitely a great milestone to have, and was when I started improving a lot more :^) (I would pick sc31so, but its already mentioned) Edited January 2, 2022 by aconfusedhuman 19 Quote Share this post Link to post
blob1024 Posted January 2, 2022 at the beginning of the year i started taking note of demos, but i quickly turned inactive to list much sadly eheh anyway i'd like to mention: night terror - HR 30 uv max in 57seconds numberjuan77 - akeldama 32 - uv max in 12:10 zero master - okuplop's slaughter map - uv max+reality TAS in 02:45:00 (its just absurd to think such lvl under reality, have a look) j4rio - MM2 32 - tyson in 03:11 and el juancho + zero master AV 25 - uv speeds. SAV88 Posted January 4, 2022 The last dooming year was extremely impressive, just like the one before it. Naming all the outstanding records of 2021 is no easy task, so I'll just add several mega‑skillful demos by a few more players who should not be overlooked: Flotsam MAP05 UV Max in 4:04 by @mhrz. Hellbound MAP14 UV Max in 8:47 by @NeilK. SkePLand MAP03 UV Max in 25:39 by @Plut. Bloodstain MAP07 UV Max in 3:39 by @sapphics. Resurgence MAP31 UV Max in 14:39 by @Tezur0. NOVA III MAP22 UV Max in 6:36 by @TheV1perK1ller. KINDa MAP26 UV Max in 9:48 by @Veinen. Memento Mori II MAP10 NM100S in 8:01 by @xit-vono. 20 Quote Share this post Link to post
megasphere308 Posted January 5, 2022 Hi everyone, Thank you 4shock for mentioning me in this thread. Doom has been a lockdown revelation for me, I started to play in 2020 and quickly felt like joining the speedrun club :) I came to speedrunning rather late, since I was a teenager when Doom was released. But at that time I only played the SNES (yes...) and the Playstation versions in a casual way. I'd like to thank @4shockblast and @aconfusedhuman who have been really helpful, since I had (and still have) so many things to learn about Doom. About my personal achievements, beating all Ultimate Doom ILs on NM100S was my first motivation to record demos. Then I did all Scythe ILs on NM100S, which was a step up in difficulty, and a great way to improve (map 29 almost destroyed my sanity!). I know I still have pretty bad movement, so I guess I'll have to tackle it to raise my skills. For now I like to play on NM100S/Speed or Pacifist/Stroller. Here are some of the runs I really enjoyed watching this year : By @Pleymo : E4M9 Stroller https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1jmnbeSZXI E4M2 Pacifist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jK5_LlcTdVQ Doom II Map 22 UV Speed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytRjn_lbm5M By @4shockblast : Scythe 2 Map 32 in many categories https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUefOUwpNPk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8OHp6cyn-o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkDkajnlmAc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTxrblJ9IbQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qV060Nhxs-8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYVPRBkZHiM Sunlust Map 01 Pacifist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdpcB80WvSY By @Zeromaster : E2M3 TAS Pacifist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jx9VkSuRnE0 Doom II Map 10 TAS UV Speed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fI-Skyu1jyI And of course his recent Sunder runs By @aconfusedhuman : Scythe Map 29 NM100S https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQXsoXlFGy4&t=12s E1M1 NM Speed : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWydylQUgVk Also, @JCD's Master Levels NM100S runs were really cool to watch. I don't copy the links because there are too many videos, but they can be found on his channel. So yeah, happy to be welcomed in the community ;) 16 Quote Share this post Link to post
Napsalm Posted January 7, 2022 (edited) 2021 has been a ride. I began running in August with earnest, before that I only tried casual UD episode runs like maybe three years ago. It's been a trip so far and I wanna say thanks to everyone who has welcomed me into the fold and for the mentions above. My memory is a very short and terrible one, but some of the runs that stand out in my head from 2021 would have to be: MasterMedi's Rush02 UV-Max and his eventual Rush D2all of course. Meowgi's Rush03 Pacifist (Please go back to Noye runs). Professor Soundman's Plutonia2 22 UV-Max. Kvothe's Valiant 09 UV-Speed, Ancient Aliens Map 23 NM Pacifist and his 19000 attempt Vanguard 01 Pacifist. Maribo's DBP02 Map 01 Pacifist giving me my first taste of competition. Daerik's YES (this was this year. Bad Naps...) Going down d2all. Of my own runs I'd say I'm most proud of my Ancient Aliens 16 Pacifist and my Sigil 01 UVSpeed and Pacifist. El Juancho Posted January 8, 2022 (edited) Thank you so much for quoting me 4Shock, I really appreciate it, sorry it took me so long to reply :>. 2021 was an unruly year on my part, this year I'll try to be much better. Honestly, I don't watch many demos (and i forget most of them) but the ones I remember the most from last year are: @kvothesixstring Vanguard map01 Pacifist 19.000 attempts without going crazy, very inspirational. @ZeroMaster010 Okuplok Slaughter Map UV-Fast TAS Okuplok without recieving damage, amazing! And Nuts UV-Max TAS I thought it was impossible even with TAS, very cool. @TomatoTom Alien Vendetta map01 UV-Max Alien Vendetta is my fav wad so watching Tom speedrunning the first map was cool for me, it's very satisfying how the super shotgun gets all the shots right in this demo haha. @Looper Doom II D2ALL UV-Speed This run is super polished, I watch it from time to time. @depr4vity Doom E1M1 Pacifist E1M1 in 8 secs... HITLESS, amazing :D. @4shockblast Alien Vendetta map25 UV-Speed Amazing avj 4shock ;) The demo I'm most proud of from 2021 is E1M1 NoMo demo in 8 seconds :) Edited January 9, 2022 by El juancho 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
