Ed Posted December 8, 2022 I decided to dust off this rework again. I contemplated just taking the assets and starting a whole new map, but so much work had already been done. It's best to just see it through. This was supposed to be bug-fixes and a visual update only, but time just wasn't kind to this map - and there was just a ton of sloppy editing throughout. One cool technique I was thinking about turned out way more useful than I had initially thought it would; Exporting the entire map as an OBJ, then importing into Blender and making little detail scenes and flair. Everything stays to scale, and I export the new geometry, add it to the project, and it drops right in and uses the same texture resources as the rest of the map. You can't even tell it's a model, save for geometry that would otherwise be impossible in GZDoom - or, way too time consuming to do with 3d floors and slopes. 36 Share this post Link to post

Ed Posted December 18, 2022 It's been a while since I really sank my teeth into mapping. There are so many new GZDoom mapping features I'm finding out about, but transparent 3d floors are still not a thing. I've got a really nice work-flow keeping the .obj map export opened in Blender. If something is out of reach, I model something quick, export/import and drop it in. The volumetrics were modeled in a few minutes, with the shadows and light being a mix of spotlight, 3d floors limited to light only, and some sector lighting. Almost all of the textures have been upscaled, with normal/spec shaders, and some PBR and parallax here and there. I'm trying to go for big, chunky details instead of micro-detailing every little bit of the map. It takes too long, and larger areas with lots of room to move are better for gameplay. 40 Share this post Link to post
