What are some WADs that deserve a new MIDI Pack?

Recommended Posts

I think, of all WADs, I'd like to see Aliens TC get a musical makeover. The atmosphere of those maps really helps carry the 1994 level design, and it always felt a bit off to start the famously empty opening level with "I Sawed the Demons" rocking in the background. 9 maps would keep it a relatively short project as well.

The thing is, to make an Aliens TC MIDI pack work, you're asking composers here to imitate James Horner. Really tough!

Even though it's Aliens, not Alien TC, Jerry Goldsmith would probably suit it better. Although that would be even tougher.

NO.

not Hell Revealed, and definitely not Going Down which was a popular suggestion last time we had a thread like this iirc. Out of the big names that are left, I could see a pack for Scythe 1. Maybe D2TWID too.

I totally agree. It's soundtrack is iconic and shouldn't be changed. People associate so many maps with so many songs from RoTT that it wouldn't work without them.

It could be argued, though, that maps 20-30 of HR would greatly benefit from new midis since these maps only use their default Doom 2 tracks. I mean, Alien Vendetta didn't have a lot of custom tracks but at least it didn't default to the stock Doom 2 midis. It doesn't get more bare bone than that. And everybody knows those last 10 maps contain a lot of the highlights of the wad. Not a replacement soundtrack then as much as a completion of the existing one.

Who could want a new soundtrack for Going Down??

me, i think that the midis in going down have rather dry or random instrumentation, and certain tracks can be really repetitive and have rather unpleasant notes at times. that being said, there are definitely some nice tracks in the wad, like the intermission theme or the music in going up

I can see that for sure, though as a long time cyriak fan his style is wonderful. Suppose it's personal taste which I can't rag on too much, lol

I remember suggesting a Fragport MIDI pack once upon a time. That megawad has some fun maps and ideas (like Map17's laser tag building and Map32's being based on the show "Crystal Maze") but no custom music to really elevate it.

I respect the work of composers and new midis are always welcomed among the community !

However, unless a wad doesn't include new music because the author didn't care about replacing midis, I don't see why a wad would deserves a midipack.

If a mapper decides to use a music from an iwad, the map will be adapted most of the time to it for instance. I see for example Doom 2 The way Id did being named. Keeping the original music is a pure choice from the authors.

I do think that Hell Revealed II could use a MIDI pack a lot more than the first HR now that I think about it. Most of the music is very dark and moody and doesn't exactly have the HR spirit in it.

I vote for TNT Blood (TeamTNT's Bloodlands) as it's one of my favorite old DM Wads, but leave the intermission music intact as it's the only song currently replaced with something by David Shaw. One reason many DM Wads likely skip level music is because there are several players who play DM exclusively with no music on though.

What? The HRII music is awesome.

It is good, but not fitting in my opinion. From what I've heard many share that sentiment

Hell Revealed needs a midi pack, and maybe also Kama Sutra. While new HR music doesn't necessarily need to sound ROTT-esque, they could do with intense, heavy metal tunes to fit the gameplay.

I’d love one for No End in Sight, personally.

That's one that could use it the most!

I just played through Speed of Doom and I think that it could use a MIDI pack, honestly. It has great MIDIs from stewboy but they and the various other songs it uses I can't say that they match the gameplay at all. So I would love to see a pack for it (maybe with a remix of Stars since it's iconic!).

Fava Beans.

That would be a great choice. I'd really like to see that happen.

Definitely Community Chest 1 and 2. Only really to replace the IWAD music. The others are fine as they are, especially Mucus Flow!

YES! I love the CC wads, CC1 and 2 could use some new tracks for sure, maybe if you contacted BPRD and Stephen Clark you could do some remixes of their original midis. I could see some great improvements to maps if they had new music.

@Omniarch, resident No End in Sight enjoyer, what do you think?

I think a bespoke OST would benefit the set immensely, provided it were any good of course. The exclusive use of Ultimate Doom tracks, while understandable, is NEIS' greatest shortcoming in my view, one which I compensate for via the use of a custom OST pack, compiled from the discography of my favourite Doom musicians.

That said, there are some tracks that I'd have a hard time dissociating from their parent maps, such as "They're Going To Get You" for both E2M4 and E4M6, along with the set's one deviation from the original lineup (D_E3M6 being replaced with the text-screen track), which is quite successful.

Mind sharing what tracks you used? I’ve put one together as well but it could use some work in some places and so I’d love to see what you came up with.

I actually used Agony Rhapsody in E2M4 because I feel it evokes the same atmosphere as Going to Get You but I immensely prefer Agony Rhapsody as a song haha.

kinda wanna do some solo packs for some of these wads. i like when community level sets get community midi packs, and love hearing new stuff, but things that are largely by one author should get music that's largely by one author. just imo

re: an NEIS pack, that one may be a weird one to pull off because both of the primary authors are active on the forums and at least one of them (me) is very very picky about music. I don't want to ruin the project by being an omnipresent ogre and nitpicking everyone's tracks to death, but it would also be weird to just hang around and ignore its existence like I'm not here. :P

I appreciate the enthusiasm, but I dunno how I feel about the idea -- unless NT says do it, in which case go for it. :p
