Is Doomguy Left-Handed?

I never even thought about this until I noticed this while digging for assets

 

Is Doomguy left-handed? Ambidextrous? I feel like my life is a lie now...

He’s definitely ambidextrous based on the sprites. Punches and shoots the pistol as a lefty, but fires the shotguns and plasma like a righty!

I wonder if Adrian did that to show Doomguy is a badass, or just to mess with people like me who notice these things?

Some people learn to shoot sidearms with their off hand so as to prevent risking injury to their primary hand. This is also incidentally why a plot point of suicides being faked in murder mysteries because of gun handiness is not frankly well thought out. :V

Gotta have to echo @Doomkid here, Doomguy seems to be ambidextrous. He's mostly a lefty, but could adapt to use both arms.

 

On the other hand (no pun intended), he loads shells into the 12g Hand Cannon Super Shotgun with his left hand.

Usually it has to do with eye dominance. For example, I am right handed. But I am left eye dominant. I shoot shotguns/rifles left handed (left hand on trigger) and pistols right handed. Most shooters are right/right, and as such most guns are built for right handed shooters (ejection port on the right). Left handed guns (ejection port on the left so spent casings/hulls don't cross your body/face) have a premium cost added to them because they are less common. It's a video game, but I'd guess Doom guy being left handed but right eye dominant.

I've been playing this game for 5 years. I suppose it is just weird I didn't notice that

Doomguy is left handed but he is right eye dominant. This is why he uses the long guns against his right shoulder instead of his left and also because most long guns are designed with right handed shooters in mind anyhow. If he used these guns on his left he would have to deal with casings flying into his face, dealing with safeties awkwardly, and he’d have to close his right eye to make his left eye focus more on the sights, which limits his peripheral vision against his foes. Keeping these guns on his right side allows for him to use these guns easier and to view the sights with his strong eye. He would reload all of these guns with his left hand. 
 

The Beretta M9 pistol he uses has an ambidextrous design by default, the gun is designed this way to be used left or right handed. You can switch the mag release to either side and most of the controls are on both sides of the gun, and since he shoots it one handed he has more control with his dominant hand, his left hand. He can position the pistol to where he can view the sights with his right eye, which allows him to keep his left eye open to enhance his peripheral vision. Most people hold pistols with their stronger hand because they feel it is easier to control when firing and reloading.
 

He doesn’t need to switch hands to reload his pistol. It’s as simple as slapping in a magazine and he’s likely been trained to reload before the gun is empty in the chamber, so very unlikely to usually need to rack the slide. He would want to keep his shooting hand on the gun to retain his firing grip as well as to keep his eyes trained on his sights and target. 
 

edit: also just realized a few others share similar view on this, but it’s true. Doomguy would not want to shoot with one eye closed in his situation.

I will, however, say the cyberdemon is right-handed, because I’d hope it can keep its dominant hand for writing and drawing and tennis and things and just teach itself to fire rockets with its non-dominant hand. I think the formers are all right handed (not counting reflected-sprite nonsense) and all the monsters I can think of seem to prefer attacking with their right hands/claws, where relevant of course.

One thing I've heard from those who are left-handed is that, since a lot of things are designed for right-handed use, they often become a bit ambidextrous to some extent out of necessity. So I could see him using his left hand by default for pistols and the such but right hand for things that would be awkward to handle otherwise.
