OVERTURE - My first map ever

Recommended Posts

Hello Guys.
I´m new here.
During this pandemic, I rediscover the fun of playing Doom, and though I'm not a very skilled player I wanted to try and make my own maps.

So Here's my first attempt. It took me a long time, but it's a pretty short map.
I'll hope I can count on your feedback and make more and better maps in the future.
Hope you have a great day!

Welcome to the community I hope you had lots of fun making this map. I might play this later if I have the time. It does look very good and certainly for a first map.

Thank you so much. It was a ton of fun, but I'm certain I'll have a lot to improve.

Small less than 5 minute map. perfect for speedrunning.

I did find only one of the 2 secrets. Otherwise seems a solid start. Good job!

I've put a signal for both secrets, but one it's a bit hard to spot.

Nice to see you join the ranks of mappers. Have fun improving your skills. Also being a beginner, I've been helping with a community project but I wish to release a small map of my own soon too, but I have much to learn. I wanted to remark that if you publish a map, you might want to give information on its compatibility format, e.g. UMDF, Boom, limit-removing, or other.

For a starter map, it's pretty fun! i loved the bit of challenge it posed, the layout was quick and simple and worked very well. I really loved the detailing and height variations within the map, i think for your first map this is a pretty good start! Also the Music for the level was really good.

I would say the next thing you need to try is variation with the lighting, a map with no variation in light level fells flat, playing with light, even small variations will make you design pop.

Not a bad first map.  I agree there needs to be more variation with lighting.  Another thing I noticed (and I notice this a lot in beginner GZDoom maps) is the usage of wall textures on floors on ceilings.  This is my opinion of course, but some wall textures just don't look good on floors and ceilings, or the other way around.  Works all right in this level, but with some textures it just looks kind of odd.  But that's me nitpicking.

Really solid for a first map honestly. I enjoyed the monster variety and the placement feels solid for the most part, though the placement of the two revenants makes that section feel a bit "campy"; I think I'd probably have preferred those revs being hidden and revealed when you pass the spot there on so you aren't encouraged to just cheese them. The soulsphere and megaarmor in the first room feel a bit too generous for me, and make the level feel perhaps a bit too easy relative to the monster density. Also, I'm not sure I'm sold on how you marked the red key door; I went through the level and wasn't sure what the red key had even been for until I backtracked and spotted it. I don't hate it per se, especially because you're likely to grab the key before you need it anyway, but I'd be careful of confusing people with stuff like that in the future. Overall these are minor critiques though and I had good fun playing through this and looking around a couple times. Thanks for sharing!

Damn this actually REALLY good! :D

The MIDI used is one heck of a rockin' awesome guitar solo (not sure who made it) and I love the detailing used in this map. Quite nice to give the player a soulsphere and mega-armour right at the start as there's no more health in the rest of the level. Good choice if I'm forced to be careful throughout a map.

There are a couple things that did bug me however. For one, ammo is a bit on the tighter side for HMP difficulty, mainly bullets. Sure, most of the time the shotgun is good but when you start creeping into Hell Knights and revenants, the chaingun does become a better choice weapon wise since it can dish out continuous damage. Speaking of Revenants, the first two revenants are literally no threat at all and if you position yourself just right, then both (or at least the right side one) can be punched to death with no penalties.

Lastly, this is definitely more of a me thing, but texture composition and alignment is a bit weird in several spots, especially the ceiling before the bridge.

Overall this is a REALLY well made map. PLEASE make more! :D

I really like the blue FLAT22 'lights' in your first image. For some reason, I've never thought of using that texture that way. Looks cool.
