Quill Posted January 26, 2022 (edited) Whenever I play Doom, I always avoid flats that look like they're dangerous, whether it be blood, nukage, or mud. However, in some WADs, they're safe to walk on, yet my instincts tell me they hurt. Do you do the same? I'm curious. Edited January 26, 2022 by dotQLL added poll 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Dusty_Rhodes Posted January 26, 2022 Totally. Mud, less so, but nukage is always to be avoided. Same with lava and blood too. Blood seems to have 50/50 split on whether it should do damage. 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
Thelokk Posted January 26, 2022 Oh yes. Just like in real life - the colored tile is lava, if you touch it you die. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Arrowhead Posted January 26, 2022 Mud and blood I don't really try to avoid, as often they're harmless - nukage and lava I'm always careful w/, though. In multiplayer, I don't worry at all - as more often than not, (at least in newer packs) there are often no hurtfloors... 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lippeth Posted January 26, 2022 I tend to just go over it quickly and don't give the damage much thought. Usually the damage is minimal or nonexistent if only running over it for a brief second. I mean, I won't hang out in damaging slime while picking off distant monsters or anything, and I'm always aware of what textures are commonly tagged as damaging, but I usually don't even try to avoid it unless it's completely separated from where I'm going or if it already caused me to die. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Teo Slayer Posted January 26, 2022 I never trusted those type of floors. Sometimes they do damage, sometimes don't 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
thiccyosh Posted January 26, 2022 Only nukage and lava really. I don't understand why blood should hurt, or mud heck or even water. Is it a biohazard that seeps through boots and through an inconveniently small scratch on Doomguys foot? 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Major Arlene Posted January 26, 2022 I blame @Bridgeburner56 for completely solidifying my fear of stepping in blood. Otherwise I have been cautious to step in anything that's not blue liquid on principle, which even got me a tad stuck in a recent Elementalism testing session. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Yumheart Posted January 26, 2022 (edited) I just try if they damage me or not. Worst case I take 5-20 undeserved points of damage, but whatever. Edited January 26, 2022 by Yumheart 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
GraphicBleeder Posted January 26, 2022 Aren't you supposed to do that? 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Luleta Posted January 26, 2022 i tend to avoid them but end up dipping my toes in to check temperature. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post
leodoom85 Posted January 26, 2022 My decision to avoid the liquid surfaces, especially those three liquids, is if it does damage or not. Well, at some wads, water ALSO does damage. Ozonia is a good example of that. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

7Mahonin Posted January 26, 2022 I usually don't avoid water or mud but do for the rest without 200/200 health and armor and/or a bio-suit. It's also good to avoid walking in these hazards in deathmatch because your grunts of pain will alert other players of your location on the map. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Wavy Posted January 27, 2022 Of course, else I'll die :V However, mud and blood are the only two that I really "trust" as different mappers have their own rules as to if they hurt or not. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

rzh Posted January 27, 2022 Yes, always. And afterwards I go home and start playing Doom. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomkid Posted January 27, 2022 I always avoid them other than water and mud! Ususally the process is: Save --> Check the liquid --> If it hurts, just reload and keep it in mind. When mud ends up being damaging, it doesn't bother me - after all, it could just as well be sewage or brown chemical waste.. so that's fine. BUTT, when blue water is damaging, it's so damn annoying. But then I think about what kind of hardships the mapper must have suffered to turn their heart into such a cold, unfeeling shell of its former self, and that perspective reminds me to count my blessings and calm down. RDETalus Posted January 27, 2022 (edited) You guys are looking at this all wrong, blue water is damaging because you’re like drowning Except when the water is shallow, then it’s safe Edited January 27, 2022 by RDETalus 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Major Arlene Posted January 27, 2022 I've also seen people use the lighter blue water in OTEX as "ice water". It's super cold! 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Understandable cause you can't get out (but like, maybe make those pits escapable then they're right at the start) 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
King Know-Nothing Posted January 27, 2022 People who don't make lava damaging are the reason I have trust issues. Honestly though I will usually dip a toe to make sure. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

The early Requiem maps do this. Water shouldn't hurt lol. Even if it was real life, water wouldn't immediately kill you just because it's cold. lol 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
