I didn't search hard to find a 16 dollar version - it was the first link on googling when I bought it. By this kind of logic Linux isn't free because I can buy Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server for 349 dollars! Worth additionally noting, that like with previous versions you can still use 7, 8.1 and 10 keys to activate 11. If you have a Windows license already on anything, it can move forward. My current Windows 11 Pro install comes all the way from a DreamSpark 7 Pro key I ended up getting through university years back. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

With most of them hovering around +-1%. Huge performance issues indeed (read: no it's not, marginal at best). I... literally said that myself. In the specific paragraph you quoted. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

act Posted February 13, 2022 Alright, I switched to Linux back in 2020 after I messed up my computer bigtime. I switched to Ubuntu GNU/Linux since I had a live USB - freshly made for this occasion - on hand. I installed Ubuntu and I realised that there was no going back after this; no more Windows, none of that. I had to force myself to learn the different ways of GNU/Linux. The first two days were the only period of time where I could say I was mad at the differences; why packages instead of installers? Why doesn't WINE work with this? How do I get Steam on this? Etc. etc. But after that point, everything kind of clicked in my monkey-tier brain, and I finally understood exactly what I was doing. Overall, I'd recommend installing Linux. It'll likely run faster on your computer than Windows; saving you time with several things such as booting the machine up, updating, refusing updates, installing new software, running games, etc. The learning curve - as I said before - is rather short compared to what you'd expect. If you decide to install Linux on your machine; I'd recommend installing Ubuntu (which you can download at https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop) thanks to it's ease-of-use compared to other distros. If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'll see if I can answer them. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Raspbian and occasionally Puppy in a pinch. I didn't mean to imply that there was anything especially unhelpful or disorganized about Slade in particular. I think I was on a Raspberry Pi and there was something weird with the UI dependencies. I think I couldn't track down the correct versions of WxWidgets? It was a few years ago. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Don't worry, I'm not reading this thread to chastise or "um actually", I just wanted to make a note that compiling from source for Slade in particular has alternatives. :) UDB is the biggest pain out of the popular Doom tools for Linux, I believe... just because it's definitely more crash prone + has to be built from source (to my knowledge). 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Slade and UDB work perfectly with WINE for me. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I have a Microsoft account, I need it for Visual Studio - but I haven't used it for my computer because I have no interest in cloud services and other shit. All data I store in the cloud is either backups of non-private data or encrypted. I wonder where this will lead. If Windows loses its power users it might run into problems long term. But then, maybe it's all a ruse to terminate Windows for good and move on to Linux for everything... >D 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

If they face enough backlash over it (and I can bet you they will), they'll have to revert back to making a MS Account optional. On the other hand, if it's just temporary, then we're all good. ;-) (...Or are we?) Otherwise... well, you've made your point. Edited February 19, 2022 by HavoX 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
