Why are monsters ungrateful?

Recommended Posts

Well, yes and no!

Obviously, it is funny, although I actually do sometimes feel that while playing - like, dude, I just helped you.

On a more serious note, I wonder how a Doom game would feel if such a mechanic actually existed.

Ha, this is funny. You need to forgive the monsters, it is in their DNA to target and agro you wherever possible.

I had a funny experience like this recently. I was feeling all powerful running through a level and killing everything. I encountered a baron and started shotgunning it and it was fighting me. Then it got hit by a low class monster (like an Imp) and they just turned around and walked off while I was still shooting it. Damn I felt very small and insignificant in that moment. I thought it might turn around and say “oh sorry, were you fighting me?” but it never did. Rude.

we need a mod for this for sure. the more you attack the monster another one is attacking, the more a "friendship" bar fills up. once it maxes out, the monster is on your side and fights all other monsters until you shoot it. get a couple archviles on your team to be unstoppable.

If only you could talk to these creatures, then perhaps you could try and make friends with them, form alliances... Now, that would be interesting.

Makes me think about Pokémon and how funny it would be to reverse this idea in those games. If you nuke a mon's friendship it'll grow vengeful, escape, and come back with a vengeance (and a rocket launcher).

if a monster saves your life killing another monster that was attacking you, would you let it alive, and give up to your uv-max run?

I recently bought the remastered version of Quake. The first mission pack, Scourge of Armagon, has a power-up that spawns a monster to fight by your side. The conjuring process clouds their minds, so they're like a big clumsy dog.

The monster follows you around the level and fights to the death to protect you. Like best buddies. Ranger and Shambler adventures dot com. One hundred years Ranger and Shambler, forever and ever, Ranger and Shambler adventures a hundred years dot com. The outside world is our enemy.

But the game still treats the monster as a baddy internally, so in order to get the full kill count you have to kill your friend at the end of the map. To this day I've only played the first couple of levels of Armagon because I just can't do it.

It's like learning how to butcher a rabbit, but worse because the rabbit is your pal, your partner, your battle buddy. I just can't do it.

I remember when I played Scourge of Armagon I didn't realize the monsters were friendly and immediately killed them like any other monster. I only learned the nature of my sins long afterwards. This is why the monsters are ungrateful.

this brings back memories of a critic's complaint about Doom at the time of release.

I guess sort of like the Shin Megami Tensei games, where you can try to negotiate with demons and get them on your side. But those are RPGs so very different mechanics.

I have to be honest, there was a time I found killing any monsters in Doom difficult. Especially pinkies, because they are clearly done just like big dumb animals who have no special malice towards you but are just hungry.

He sees me as food with the intention of eating me. That's malicious enough as far as I'm concerned! <reloads SSG>
