10tonclutch Posted February 9, 2022 Hi all, New to the forum and I'm not sure if this is the correct place to ask a question like this so I apologise in advance. Is it at all possible to check the skill the game is set to using a cheat or command from within the game? I know there is a default skill setting, but I just wanted to check after a level warp (IDCLEV). Many thanks, - 10T 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Murdoch Posted February 9, 2022 Bit confused by the question. You select your skill when you start a game. That skill remains set until you end that game. If you save the game and reload it remains whatever you picked when yiu started that save. Or do you have a save whose skill setting you forgot? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
RHhe82 Posted February 9, 2022 I understood the question such that they wish make certain of what skill level is on. For instance, I launch Doom thru a launcher straight to some map, and sometimes I forget whether or not I remembered to adjust the difficulty to the desired one. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post
ImproversGaming Posted February 9, 2022 Not sure how to do this but it would be useful - either using a cheat code to change skill level or to see what it is. I record runs and only noticed later that it was not at the skill level I wanted. Not sure if this was me rushing through a menu in game or having a formatting error on the command line arguments I used to launch. You could check by the number of enemies, the damage rolls, the amount of ammo you pick up, etc. but this is tedious. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

I believe that ZDoom had a cheat, something like IDSKILL or something to that effect that would display the current skill level, just wondered if there was anything like that in PrBoom - 10T 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

There was definitely nothing like it in the original game. Bit of Googling shows no clear evidence of such a thing in PRBoom but the thread below had a useful if cumbersome suggestion. https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/105137-stuck-on-map-07-outer-storage-warehouse/ 1. Save the game. 2. Launch a new game of what you believe is the correct skill and warp to the map in question. 3. Note monster count from the automap. 4. Repeat for other skills. 5. Reload your game. 6. Compare the count and see which one matches. Hopefully whichever map you are on the author implemented skill levels with differing monster counts. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
10tonclutch Posted February 9, 2022 Hi all, Thanks for the replies and useful information. I assume that the 'default skill' setting in PRBoom+ applies when level warping with IDCLEV? Many thanks, - 10T 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

JadingTsunami Posted February 9, 2022 (edited) The latest (development) version of PrBoom+um has a "skill" cheat. Just type "skill" during gameplay. Edited February 9, 2022 by JadingTsunami 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
