An idea I thought I'd throw out.

Recommended Posts

I've been sitting at my desk for the past two hours, reading my own personal copy of "The Black Book of Doom" and listening to some midi tunes (as you do), and I had recently been thinking about older megawads, specifically because in my midi mix-tape (aka my playlist on shuffle), a song from Memento Mori showed up. I was vibing along, just thinking about "Hey, what should I do to continue my mapping career?" since I was fresh outta ideas.

And then it hit me - What if we made a megawad like back then?
i.e. vanilla (or possibly limit-removing, just kinda depends), mus lumps, a tex.wad, the whole nine yards.

I'm not on dw that often so that's probably already been a thing, but if not - I thought I'd throw the idea out there and see if people would be semi-interested in that whatsoever, either for contributing a map, or just playing something in that style.

i'd absolutely love to make a few maps for something like that!! i've actually wanted to make an episode for a while now using memento mori 2 textures...i adore the aesthetic that they give, and am a huge fan of anything made by the möller brothers. in fact, in all the scrapped solo works i've made, i pretty much always use at least a few textures from tic wads. they just go so well with stock doom 2 textures

if you're serious about it tho, i highly suggest not making it be a sequel. idk if you saw what happened with hell revealed 3, but the name didn't go over well here

Something in the vein of Memento Mori or Perdition's Gate could be nice. In other words, fairly small, classic looking maps, that don't overstay their welcome, while offering a fair challenge with a clear progression - easy at the start and hard by the end, without turning into a boring slaughter fest with 43234 monsters per map, like so many modern wads do.

alot of people here want a seaqual to something but we'd have to stick to a certain style and thatd be kinda dull for multiple people to contribute we should make something new

yeah we should make something that's new and our own, I wouldn't be able to use custom stuff (textures, decor, etc.) though, I can make only vanilla

idk when the last time you played memento mori was, but some of its maps are pretty big, and there's absolutely a bit of proto-slaughter in some of the later maps

the thing is tho, that's already been done countless times with megawads like reverie, akeldama, and and the rowdy rudy series. op is saying we should style it after something specific (at least, i think that's what they're saying)

besides, we'd already have to style it after older wads; this'd just be adding custom stuff to the mix

I agree with this, I think this concept also applies to "continuation" wads of official iwads due to their release date, like Plutonia 2/Revisited, DTWID1/2, TNTR/D, SIGIL, you name it.

Looking at what unofficial sequels some people are recommending, I don't think we need more sequels, I assume the OP was talking about making a wad inspired by older wads (like the 1994-2000 wads) and not sequels of old wads.

this is exactly what I was thinking in all honesty. just a fun blast-through vanilla mapset.

oh yeah no fuck that lmao, wanted to try and make our own Memento Mori basically.

if we did do weapons, the only thing I'd personally change is making the pistol perfectly accurate and the chaingun never accurate, and even then, I doubt it.

if people actually do wanna do an idea like this, I can start throwing together a texture wad, with y'alls help since idk what to add exactly. was thinking some from Plutonia, the best from TNT, the two MM, a bit of PD, and some other vanilla wads.

i have a personal texture pack that you could use as a starter! memento mori is pretty over-represented in it, but there's also other stuff in there as well. maybe check this out and see if it'd be a good base for you or not?

I've done it before, just not sure if I should/would.

I'll check it out when I get home (in class atm lmao)

yall got any textures you guys want in particular? I wanna grab the Plut textures (brick, wood, that stuff) and I wanna try having the TNT cave textures in there, think it would be interesting.

The reason why classic megawads had all of those qualities was a product of limitations.  So I would check maps for vanilla compatibility.

you'll need more than that; a strict visplane limit would also be required in order to emulate the lack of detail. i typically set my hard limit to 80 or so, with a soft limit of 60

I was gonna say vanilla but maybe a soft limit of 80 since I do wanna allow some bigger plains areas and encourage outside areas as opposed to corridor shooting throughout.

I could do a map or two. I think limit removing would be best, and I could do some cool ass custom demons on a .bex or .deh patch with @gwain

I'd also love to see a new texture wad in the style of cc4-tex.wad. It's been more than ten years, and I think the community would love some new stuff :^)

I just suggested it because I loved the original and lots of other WADs have sequels.

But most of them had original members agree to a sequel.  I guess you could ask Anders johnsen but I wouldn't, I wouldn't want to live in the shadow of a project such as AV, doubly so when AV pushed the limits of the exe, while others are talking about limiting visplanes to a limit of 60-80.  AV's best maps (Probably) push 100 at least.

Can't we like make it a tribute rather than a direct sequel. There are something like tnt revilution you know.

to build off of this, the only name I could up with for this idea was "Memento Vivere", which is the opposite of Memento Mori.

main issue is I do legitimately want to keep it vanilla and really only make small with a dehacked patch (fixing the SSG flash, fixing the whoosh archvile sound, MAYBE make the pistol always accurate/chaingun never accurate, small things like that).
