unerxai Posted February 15, 2022 Quake 3 just because how good it was and the fun memories, but I wouldn't go back to playing it again. Doom is a close second and I always return to it eventually. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Wavy Posted February 15, 2022 I don't like picking favourites, but I think I'll go with the console versions of PowerSlave. The level progression is the main point as to why I love it, with its sprawly non-linear levels that you get return, which lends it a Metroidvania feel. One other thing that it has unlike other shooters is that you feel as if you're evolving as a character by getting new items which allow you to progress though the game (like higher jumps so you could go into areas that would be unreachable otherwise). Other shooters just give you more bigger and better weapons, and that's about it. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

hybridial Posted March 21, 2022 At the time it was Goldeneye/Perfect Dark. Now, eh, it's hard. Duke 3D, Blood, Quake and Doom 1/2 are legit hard to pick from. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Goat-Avenger Posted March 22, 2022 Of any console shooter, Goldeneye got the most playtime from me. Though looking back, Turok and to a slightly lesser extent Turok 2 were absolutely amazing games. Half-life probably got the most play time from me on the PC. IMO, the half-life engine, was really quite amazing; it would be nice if they'd release the source under the GPL.. Soldier of fortune, I always thought, was quite amazing as well; but, it didn't really get a lot of playtime from me, despite me being quite impressed with it. Another PC shooter that got a decent amount of playtime from me was Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six. Looking back, it wasn't anything to write home about, in many ways. Largely it was probably a brand sale, more than anything; but, it brought a certain element of strategy/realism to a shooter, that you couldn't find elsewhere; and it was insanely difficult. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Grazza Posted March 22, 2022 Hard to choose between Unreal, Blood and Half-Life. They all had unique strong points. Unreal was gorgeous throughout in visuals and sounds. Blood had twisted dark humour in enemies, weapons, one-liners and, well, let's say "damage". Half-Life had a strong storyline and added a mass of gameplay elements that altered the whole FPS genre. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Rifleman Posted March 22, 2022 Tough one, but I'll go with Unreal Tournament. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
staticsquidd Posted March 22, 2022 I'd honestly say either Quake 1, Quake 3, UT99, or Half-Life. If I had to choose between any, HL would be my pick. Game never gets old (except for like one or two chapters). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

And, of course, DooM. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

In Taw Tu'lki's defence I'd say the first 2 years of the 2000's were kind of an extended version of the 90's anyway. Many trends were continued in the same way atleast until 9/11 significantly altered the general cultural landscape and mentalities. Also most of the conceptualization and development of that game probably took place in the 90's aswell. Edited March 22, 2022 by OniriA 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Fluuschoen Posted March 22, 2022 Quake III Arena, without question. Sank ~8k hours in the franchise (mostly Q3/DeFRaG and QL, but played every last iteration for at least a good ~2-300 hours). It's not just a game, it's an art, a RELIGION. QuakeWorld and Doom comes in second, but I also love Build engine games, because they tend to be very atmospheric while being fast-paced. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Yeah, Solder of Fortune was (and still is) really nice! Brutally chaffing enemies while juggling the weapon in your hands never gets old. Scoped throwing knives were especially sick. 18 hours ago, Goat-Avenger said: Another PC shooter that got a decent amount of playtime from me was Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six. Nah, the original Rainbow Six and Rogue Spear are indeed nice, even in multiplayer. The fact that you could complete a mission by making up a plan for the AI to execute is also really cool. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
OniriA Posted March 23, 2022 Duke Nukem: Total Meltdown for the PSX. Still the version with the best soundtrack (which I still listen to this day). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Antroid Posted March 23, 2022 Turoks (2 mainly), Dooms, Duke 3d, Quake 1 and Half-Life. I guess a tiny bit of Unreal even though I've never actually finished it. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
