My first proper map. The Arena.

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone! I have recently started making my first map and am making this post to see how many people will be interested in it. It is a large, open box arena full of little shrines full of enemies and weapons. The map should be fun single player but i have made sure of multiplayer compatibility. When you spawn in you are given every powerup in the game, along with a shotgun and backpack. Every "shrine" has a different type of enemy guarding the loot. After battling through The Arena, you make it to the opposite corner to where you started. Where you use the gate of sacrifice (romero's head on a pike) to escape. recommended difficulty: hurt me plenty... if enough people are interested i will upload the map when it is done. :)

Hey! congrats on your mapping endeavor, it's always exciting to see new mappers take the leap! I think if you want to pique peoples interest around your map, you may want to post a few screen shots so they can see what you are up to, and if its the sort of thing they want to play. you may also want to give this thread a read before going forward with posting the map.

Best of luck,

Womp.

Okay, I'm blunt about these things so don't take it personally.

-First, there's little purpose in creating a thread about your first map if it isn't even done yet.

-Try not to take pics in the editor. It's kind of lazy. It doesn't require much effort to get actual screenshots in-game.

-That map looks incredibly simplistic and under detailed. In all honesty, it looks more like an experiment in editing than a "proper map".

-Having clumps of items/enemies like that is a common rookie mistake, try not to do that. That's not intelligent placement of things, it doesn't work well in terms of gameplay and it looks very cheap.

-Don't do the whole "if enough people are interested, I'll upload it" thing. Just upload it when you want, for whatever reason you want.

The concept of the map seems inspired and interesting, but personally I think it could use more time in the oven, judging by the screenshots.

I don't really understand the point of this thread. If you want to generate interest for your map you can post screenshots of it in the Doom Pictures thread or in this thread. There's no need to create a separate thread just to show screenshots, if you're not going to upload the wad. Also, you can edit your first post ( the OP) and upload screenshots there, rather than having someone scroll through the thread. It's just more convenient for people that way. Read through this thread on how to take screenshots. You don't have to take screenshots like this, I just think they look better than screenshots in the editor.

From the screenshots, I see a lot of repetitive texture usage ( I'm still trying to kick that habit, so take this critique with a pinch of salt) and no height variation.

Doom maps need at least some height variation to make the layout interesting to look at. There's also way too many powerups given to the player. There's no way they'd need six invulnerability spheres or five megaspheres. I'm going to link a video that really helped me when I released my (ill-fated) first map.

I really hope this critique and my advice helps you and I hope it can help give you an idea of what you need to do.

I'll agree with @TheMagicMushroomMan, and I'll add that placement of powerups and items is extremely important for making gameplay interesting. Clumping all powerups in one corner is not at all interesting.

Invisibility spheres are pretty useless to most doom players when it comes to fighting projectile-shooting enemies, although they are good for high-hitscanner dense encounters. Invulnerability spheres are very powerful, and require an equally challenging encounter to be balanced against. Light amp goggles tend to ruin the atmosphere of a level (if on the default full-bright setting), so are also only really useful sparingly to deal with specific areas that are extra dark.

There is also too much open space for the amount of enemies seen.
