DavitW Posted February 26, 2022 I saw the xbox ports of Doom 3 and Resurrection of Evil in an EB games shortly after they came out. They had the first two games and even the master levels on them as well. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

DSC Posted February 26, 2022 I still remember the moment very clearly funnily enough. Many years ago, I was watching a documentary about the history of video-games, and that particular episode was about either FPSs or violent games in general. They talked first about Wolf3D, first time I have ever heard of it too. Then, of course, they couldn't gloss over id's next game... Anyone here might know what documentary it was? 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
cannonball Posted February 26, 2022 It would probably be around the early 00s, my best friend at the time had a load of old 90s games which also included the commander keen games. We went through the three episodes of doom and that was that for a while. I would have played them earlier but when I got my first PC Quake was still riding high and I never as a child got the opportunity to play the earlier ID games. It was when I was at university from 2008 onwards that I really got into the game. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

brick Posted February 26, 2022 Reading some of these replies makes me feel old XD We had the registered Wolf3D release that included the Nocturnal Missions, and I guess my parents thought my brother and I were old enough to handle the pixel violence, so when shareware Doom came out they got it for us. We must've played it to death in the next months, and when we asked for the registered version they got it too. I haven't played the game non-stop since but it sits along a handful of other games (including Civilization I and Heroes of Might and Magic III) that I always go back to. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
FEZ_GG Posted February 26, 2022 I first heard of Doom back in the Angry Video Game Nerd's Sega 32X video, but I wouldn't touch the game until 2021. I use my Switch to play games during my lunch break at work, and Doom was one of the titles I had bought in earlier sales.(it was $1.50 and I had gold coins for it) I was amazed at how well Doom had aged and how fun it was, but I didn't get hooked until June when I decided to look into source ports. As previously mentioned, decino's videos helped increase my interest. With all the Youtube content that's been gaining traction over the last couple of years and the ease of access with the console ports, it feels like there's never been a better time to get into Doom. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
heliumlamb Posted February 26, 2022 i was first exposed to first person games through halo and half-life, but i kept hearing and reading about this fabled "doom", not really knowing much about it other than "you explode demons". at one point, i remember trying to download many dubious "doom.exe" files off of limewire, and i still wonder what those executables did to that poor installation of windows xp to this day. i dont remember seeing any retail releases out on the shelves, and steam was limited to just valve's games at that time. i eventually found the doom 1 shareware and a copy of the GBA port of doom 2. it wasn't until i had an xbox and a copy of the doom 3 collector's edition with those ports of the first 2 that i had a chance to play the dooms. ultimate quake was on shelves though, and i think i played through quake 1 before i had a chance to play all of doom 1 and 2 on the pc. eventually a neighbor's stepdad or something like that let me borrow their doom 2 floppies to install, and from that point my subconscious had been permanently altered. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Lime Posted February 27, 2022 I found a website running the shareware version about a decade ago when I was a kid but I didn't play any more until 2021 when I bought all 4 iwads on steam during a sale. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

archiemk5 Posted February 28, 2022 i got into doom just last year. before i wasn't so interested in it. my pc was a potato one, so i sought to play retro games. and i suddenly found doom classic. best decision i've ever made, it's my favorite game now. my first experience was on dosbox, a very unconventional option, but it was fun nonetheless, i got the wads for free from the internet lmao. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
dyshoria Posted February 28, 2022 i discorvered it from avgn. A few years later i got into game emulation and i played knee deep in the dead. After that i got doom eternal for the ps4 on my birthday and later bought the original with steam 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
