I'm working on a Doom manga. (First reveal)

Eh, probably not.

There's already an entire genre of animu and manga that serve a similar purpose. Something like that probably wouldn't fit Doom at all and would just be the non-horrific kind of jarring, which is part of the joke in the 1st place.

In all seriousness though, as this is a project that's specifically designed to tackle mental health on top of being a Doom story, something is being worked on to incorporate positive things for mental health, from inquiries about self-care ("Have you been getting enough sleep?") to positive affirmations ("You are not the sum of your failures."). Granted, no two people are exactly the same, but it's a start.

Something like this would already be considered important or progressive like say in the United States where mental health has only recently begun to really enter the public consciousness. In a country like Japan, something like this is almost unheard-of especially given that work (and one's professional career) there seems to take precedence above many other things... to put it lightly, from what I've heard.

I'm not sure that a project like this would be the first to seriously tackle something like mental health, but I do hope the impact this project leaves is as lasting as it can get.

Yeah, and you saw the abomination in your head and the words would have to be taken out of your mouth, else they'd be describable. :P

I still don't know how you'd be able to adequately communicate specific demons that Doomguy isn't capable of attacking to a Japanese artist.

Like I mentioned, this would be handled on a case-by-case basis. One abomination could be like a mass of alien-looking geometries, a writhing mass of bodies, or a floating mass of screaming heads (and none or all of that could be its true form). Or maybe it's not even its full form is ever shown.

And that's assuming the abomination is even shown at all. For all we know, there's only the sounds it makes or the claw marks it might leave behind in some arcane library somewhere in Hell.

The closest trope I feel would accomplish this would be called "Ultimate/Unseen Evil" or possibly even "You Cannot Grasp the True Form".

Either way, this is all to pretty much illustrate that not only is Hell a place of unspeakable evil, but also a place beyond all understanding (and especially of human comprehension).

Well, update time (sort of).

That, and a couple of things I want to get off my chest.

First, the update(s):
I may have potentially found the artist I would like to do the art for this manga; I've already gotten something done with them and it looks like they've already done their homework in regards to the Doom franchise so that's definitely a good thing. The only thing now would be to actually drop the big question, and all I can say is that unless they explicitly say "yes" (especially considering how busy they tend to be), nothing's really guaranteed at the moment.
The other big update is that after overcoming a spot of writer's block, I've been working on the actual story (from the synopsis and plot beats to characters) and all I can really say so far is this: It's most definitely going to be a hell of a Doom story.

Now, for the big thing I want to get off my chest: Namely, the matter of potential licensing and legal stuff.

This isn't some grand revelation I've made in the heat of the moment; if anything, this has been something I've been thinking of for the longest time ever since the idea of doing a Doom manga came to fruition.
I know that traditionally, fan-made works aren't really too much of an issue in general but there have been some... unique cases (case in point, the roguelike that will be known only as DRL). Plus, I don't think the guys at id themselves would have an issue with a project like this and it would be better to reach out to ZeniMax or even Microsoft, but it'd be best to not assume at all especially when dealing with something like this.

I know that as long as money doesn't get involved for the final product, I won't have to worry as much about having to seek out the license (at least in theory).

"But Man of Doom", you may ask, "why not just leave out all the Doom stuff and just make something original instead? It worked with what's now Jupiter Hell."
All I can really say is that the past couple of years have caused me to have... very complicated feelings towards the Doom franchise (as expounded upon earlier), and I feel the only real way to at least assess those feelings (and the past few years of my personal life) is to work on a Doom story of sorts. There's just too many personal feelings involved for me to just... not make a new Doom story.
That, and I feel that the franchise has been kind of missing something for the longest time and I feel this particular thing has been missing from the franchise since the 90s; I'm not even sure if I'll be able to finally capture this thing but I'm sure as hell going to see it through.
Also (like I said in the past), the Doom franchise has always had a cult following in Japan ever since the original game came out (and has only been majorly bolstered with the release of Doom 2016/Eternal), and I feel that doing this project could possibly capitalize on something really big. Combine that and the mission to create a work that looks to at least bring awareness to mental health, and I think there's a winning combo here.

And as for the decision as to whether to get money involved in this: I don't think having to make this decision could have possibly come at a worse time.

Without getting into too much detail, I've been placed back in one of those transitory phases of my life where I'm not sure my adult life will take me next. All that I know is that I can't keep relying on others to bail me out when things go pear-shaped as I know that I can't keep doing it forever. I know one day I'm going to have to start taking care of myself, and for now, as for when the next phase of said adult life finally comes is very nearly out of my control.

So for now, all I can do is to just keep working on the story (and possibly reach out to at least the guys at id, or even higher if necessary to make sure that this project is officially good to go).

I know there are tons of different words in different languages for the same thing, but my point is that if you're creating it in English, then there is no reason not to use the English word.

As many others has pointed out, this is just pure condescending. Manga/anime is an art style, and the artist doesn't have to be a Japanese - take my profile picture for example. I made that, and I am not even a Japanese.

This is also appropriate.

The Fragile but Doom and Manga  Sorry im too addicted to NIN

I cant wait to see what comes of this. Some of the most powerful things come from the inside, it seems like a interesting way of expressing yourself.

(im adding on via edit because I just thought more about this)

Am I the only one here that thinks that Doom would be an interesting setting for this kind of story? If this is meant to be the Doomguy from NuDoom, that means that he has spent eons fighting hell. Imagine the ways that could destroy a person, not just physically but emotionally and mentally, hell spiritually if you want to go for that.

This is a idea that the new games completely forget, or at least just barely acknowledge Doomguy's damaged self. I get the point that Doom 2016 and Eternal are more gameplay focused games, but I think that idea could make those games much more interesting from a story perspective. From what I remember the only thing that could show this idea is the hallucinations of Daisy.

So what im saying is, this is a really interesting idea for a story and I hope this happens.

…kept you waiting, huh?

So yeah, I’ve actually been making steady progress so far.

I already have an outline just about finished for at least the first major story arc, I’m just finishing up with elements like various characters as well as various “game” elements to show up in the story (think the various “pickups” from ammo to bonuses to keys to powerups from the classic games), and I’m already working on really fleshing out the first chapter.

And lastly, the big announcement.

Namely, I’ve officially found the artist who is going to tackle this project.

All I can really say now is that I positively cannot wait to see what she’s going to show all of us.

(That, and I’m actually going to see if I can have her join these forums so she can show you what she has cooked up for this manga so far; I should also mention her English is actually really good.)

Heh, you’re actually not that far off; it is indeed bits and pieces of The Fragile with just a hint of The Downward Spiral. ;)

Well, without really giving away the story for now, all I can really say is that we are about to step into the journey of a Doom Marine who has positively been through it and then some (thanks to not only Hell but also the UAC).

Hallucinations with disturbing images and all.

And seriously guys, I can’t thank you enough for your words of encouragement.

It really means the world to me, especially as this is the one Doom project I especially want to see through to the end.

Double post (I know), but not only do I have an update to share with you all, namely that I also need some input on your part.

Well, the artist and I have been trying to think of a name for the manga that isn’t just “Doom” while we continue to make significant progress (and we hopefully get to show you some real teasers).

While we have come up with some names, we’re still trying to decide what the final name of the Doom manga might be.

And that’s where you come in.

As a result, I’ve made a poll that not only consists of a few names that came up, but also a sneak peek of the manga’s story to help you inform your decision:

https://strawpoll.com/polls/e2navY95AgB

As for the artist, please allow me to introduce you to @Saki, who made an account here not too long ago.

If you be so kind as to give her a warm welcome to the Doom community for real, it would be deeply appreciated.

While she herself is new to the Doom franchise, she’s more than willing to get more knowledge about it.

Obviously, please be extra-nice to her, especially if she needs some extra help with getting more knowledge on the Doom franchise.

In the meantime, why doesn’t she show you a bit of her work here on this very thread?

It was a topic I already addressed some time ago (or rather, a few posts up).

Besides, unless something like money gets involved, I doubt id or ZeniMax might get involved for a fan-work. (Yes, I know about DRL.)

And I’ve also mentioned possibly reaching out to at least id Software themselves to make sure a project like this is good to go (as well as discuss what exactly can be done with the Doom IP based on what can be done as a fan-work or otherwise). It’s something that will definitely get addressed a little bit later down the line.

Well, expect a little bit of everything from not just Doom 3, but also nuDoom (2016/Eternal), classic Doom, and quite a bit of Doom 64!

Anyway, we’ve got lots more to show you on the way so expect updates sooner rather than later!

I’m so glad you’ve already appreciated some of Saki’s work so far, as her future work will absolutely knock it out of the park!

As for what the Doom manga will finally be called, it probably won’t have an official name just yet until around the time we can finally start finishing up at least the first chapter (plus we still need to discuss with id or ZeniMax or possibly even Microsoft on what can be done going forward).

Wow that arts like really good, sometimes I forget Manga can be really dark, like Attack on Titan. The first image in my head was green spiky-haired teen age doomguy when I first read this thread, glad you destroyed my stupid pre-conception. Looking forward to seeing more.

Oh, and doomguy even learned to dual wield, he's never managed that before!

Alrighty, so Saki has currently been working on the various character designs (both the various protagonists and the various demons one can expect to see), and you can definitely expect to see her update this thread with concept art or even previews as time goes on.

And since I'm currently finishing up the first chapter for real, I figured it might as well be time to finally start sharing details for the manga's story proper (and I've spoilered this for those who might want to go in completely blind, plus a mild content warning for mental health stuff):

Spoiler
  • This Doom manga will be a return to the horror-action roots of classic Doom/Doom 64 after all the more action-focused titles of Doom 2016/Eternal. Though instead of just resorting to traditional horror tropes like Doom 3, this will feel a lot closer to Doom 64 tone-wise more than anything (especially with a focus on psychological and surreal horror).
  • Story-wise, the Doom manga is not a reboot, a remake, or even a reimagining. If anything, this story is more of an "alternate timeline" take on the traditional franchise's premise (Hell invades Mars/moons and later Earth).
  • As for the actual story proper, the first two major story arcs will actually be an adaptation of Final Doom. Or more specifically, this first story arc will be adapting TNT: Evilution (with elements of Doom 2016) whereas the second story arc will be adapting The Plutonia Experiment (with elements of the first Quake). As for going further after the second arc, we've already got something planned.
  • Even though the events of the manga take place after its own version of the Outbreak (Doom/Ultimate Doom) and the Incident (Doom II), those will still be heavily referenced. There are even plans to work on a story that goes into more detail about this timeline's version of Hell on Earth, depending on what might happen in the future.
  • Regarding the Doom Marine, there's a reason why they won't be called Doomguy, namely because this timeline's version of the Marine is actually going to be agender/nonbinary (with they/them pronouns) as well as constantly covered in armor or clothing as to not reveal any specific details like ethnicity or even nationality. The reason for this is actually twofold: John Romero once mentioned that the status bar face in classic Doom is actually supposed to represent the player so they're supposed to imagine themselves as Doomguy (and thus became a concept I wanted to run with), and also so that whoever reads the manga can more easily put themselves in the Marine's shoes.
  • (Content warning) Speaking of this timeline's Doom Marine, to say that they would be a deeply troubled and tormented individual would be putting it lightly. Yes, their demon-killing skills and strength could even rival that of the Doom Slayer (especially with a bit of technological experimentation and a supernatural something-something going on), but let's just say that they're in no mental state to regularly interact with human beings; at the start of the manga's story, they're stuck in a sort of psychological "safe mode" as not only do they basically do their job without much passion, they also have to ward off things like hallucinations and even suicidal ideations. In fact, their overarching character arc is basically the Marine relearning how to start being a human being instead of just a killing machine with no agency whatsoever, including relearning how to trust and even open up to other people.
  • (Content warning) Since this Doom story is going to be very focused on mental health and the struggles of dealing with trauma, this story is going to cover topics ranging from depression to disassociation to self-destruction to suicide, plus the many things that are capable of inducing such intense trauma. Plus, this story is very much not going to be one of those "woe is me" stories soaked in self-pity, as the story it will also deal with themes of accountability and learning how to carry on in the face of grief, horror, and tragedy.
  • Not only will there be extreme graphic violence (because how can you have a Doom title without graphic violence), there will also be prolific sexual content throughout the story (including shown genitalia and even... naughty acts) to the point that I even joked that this story might as well be called "I Can't Believe It's Not Hentai!"; in all seriousness, this is to show sexuality as a thoroughly human experience (one that even the Marine will have to undertake on their journey to relearning becoming a human) while making said experience as tasteful as possible.
  • There will be other protagonists other than the Doom Marine (though they're more secondary protagonists if that makes sense), and most of them work for the UAC. Even though most of these protagonists aren't traditionally classed as soldiers, let's just say there's more than meets the eye with them namely in how much demon ass they can kick.
  • Speaking of this timeline's Union Aerospace Corporation, they're very much not the demon-worshiping cult of 2016 or Eternal. If anything, this UAC is very much militantly fighting against the demons, but let's just say that this does not automatically make them the good guys now (especially for reasons that will be later revealed as the story progresses).
  • Considering that this manga's story will technically show Earth after the events of Doom/Doom II, expect to see an unmistakably cyberpunk world where megacorporations have literally replaced actual governments and where one can also expect to see not-so-thinly-veiled jabs at capitalism and all the havoc it wreaks on humanity; it's worth mentioning that we wanted to do a lot more with the cyberpunk theme than just "what if Cyberpunk 2077 had demons lmao". And with the aforementioned secondary protagonists, their stories will portray an unquestionably bleak place where... let's just say that due to their status and position within the UAC, they can possibly be considered "lucky".
  • Last but not least, after taking some more time at the poll results for what the manga would be titled and... yeah, I can definitely see this manga being called "Doom Immortal".

Now that we've covered some of the story bits, there's also a few more things worth mentioning, especially with some ideas Saki shared so far:

  • The depiction of Hell in this Doom manga is not only going to be just fire and brimstone, but also much stranger than that (also, Saki specifically mentioned being influenced by the works of Beksinski for the overall aesthetic of Hell).
  • As for the classic rogues gallery of demons, you can expect them to be very recognizable as they take aspects of appearances from different Doom games ranging from the classic titles (Cacodemon) to Doom 64 (Pain Elemental) to Doom 3 (Lost Soul) to 2016 (Revenant) to Eternal (Hell Knight); also, some of them will be... quite a bit NSFW and some of them will have quite a few new tricks up their sleeve.
  • As for the inhabitants of Hell who aren't the classic rogues gallery (or even the extended rogues gallery for future story arcs), you can expect to see creature designs specifically influenced by the likes of Bloodborne especially since we're getting all up into cosmic horror when it comes to Hell itself (and yes, this is very much Saki's idea!).
  • An idea for the cybernetically-enhanced demons like the Arachnotron or the Revenant is to actually have "variants" of them in that they have different types of cybernetic weapons.
  • The "civilian zombies" (the equivalent to the Possessed or just Zombies) are going to be referred to as the Unwilling, whereas the "soldier zombies" (AKA the equivalent to the Possessed Soldiers or the classic Zombieman/Shotgun Guy types) will be referred to as the Silent.
  • While the overall art style is currently being finalized (in a more realistic direction), Saki and I did go back and forth on what kind of manga or anime we could draw inspiration from for style and theming; Saki specifically mentioned wanting to at least check out GenoCyber as one possible inspiration since I mentioned that it was probably the closest thing to an anime adaptation of Doom 1993 (even if the story isn't all that great).
  • In the theme of mental health, expect the glitch aesthetic to be very prevalent through just about every aspect of the manga (from promotion to actual in-story imagery with a canonical explanation).
  • You can also expect to see a ton of rabbit imagery and motifs in the story (and yes, this Doom Marine also had a pet bunny named Daisy).
  • Regarding the gore, you can expect it to be on the more realistic side (or at least on the very detailed side of things); don't exactly expect high-pressure blood sprays here.

So yeah, that's the update I have so far. Expect to hear more from Saki in a little bit!

“Kept you waiting, huh?”

So, the first couple of chapters have been finished on the writing stage and I’m already scoping out how the next few chapters are to play out. Even the later chapters are starting to be fleshed out a bit.

As for Saki, she’s currently been dealing with a massive backlog of commissions plus IRL things, so we’ve been going back and forth on what to do next.

And thus, the next big development I’ll need to talk about.

Namely that going forward, this project will officially be receiving the Andrew Hulshult/David Levy treatment (this manga will actually have two artists instead of just one).

As for this other artist, I’ve already been in contact with him and his role in the project has been confirmed.

Say hello to Tatsumimi; here’s a bit of his profile(s) and body of work:

https://www.instagram.com/p/CnWmux1rdo2/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

Lastly, all three of us are going to start working on a bit of a special presentation. Based on how things are going so far, expect this update to actually arrive sooner rather than later.

So in the coming days, I’m gonna be reaching out to various movers and shakers in the Doom community to help out with spreading awareness of the Doom manga as we should finally start having things to show in time for Doom’s 30th anniversary.

Big things are officially coming on December 10th.

But in the meantime, please enjoy this teaser image (as a more complete version of it will be posted to social media in the coming days).

And with that out of the way, I would like to announce that more teasers will be shown in the coming weeks, leading up to the first official reveal of the Doom manga on Doom’s 30th anniversary.

While I may not be necessarily spamming the future teasers here, I do ask that these teasers get as much attention and engagement as they possibly can, so that the reveal can be appropriately one hell of an event.

And yes, that means more likes and retweets in the thing there for this teaser as well.

The next teaser has dropped:

https://www.instagram.com/p/C0gETfYsWCk/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

And with this teaser comes bad news, good news, and an open question.

First, the bad news: due to prior commitments by the artists and them not having enough time to get things done by December 10, said reveal on December 10 is going to have to be one final teaser.

Currently, there’s no date for the actual reveal, but I should hopefully have it for you sooner rather than later.

I don’t want to end up rushing Tatsumi and GENU, and I know for sure that their work will be ready when they deem it so.

But yeah, the official date for the full reveal has been moved to When It’s Done (not the actual manga, just the concept art planned for that public reveal).

Second, the good news: after all is said and done, I know for sure that not only do I have more of a plan going forward (on top of nearly being finished with writing the first five chapters), I also know for sure these artists have officially dedicated themselves to the cause. Their commitment has been confirmed.

As for the December 10 teaser itself, let’s just say that it’s going to be one hell of a teaser.

Not only that, I’ve already been starting to see bits and pieces of the concept art that’s going to be shown for the full reveal, and I can safely confirm that you’re going to need extra amounts of ready for that reveal.

But yeah, When It’s Done is indeed likely to come sooner rather than later (I would roughly estimate around March-April at the latest, but it could be much earlier than that).

Lastly, the open question: I would actually like to preface this by letting you know that I did not start working on this project hoping for any kind of financial gain, only to tell a story that’s not only unmistakably Doom but also to tell a story I can call my own.

Does this mean that working on this project full-time is already out of the question?

I honestly can’t answer that now, but I can tell you now that things are already ok with my having a day job.

From the money perspective, I should be ok.

I know things can change in a split-second (and I can tell you that from firsthand experience many times over), but I should be fine in the end.

With that out of the way, how would you guys feel if I was to either open up a Patreon or Discord server subscriptions for the Doom manga (or both)?

Said Patreon or Discord subs would be so that the artists working on this manga can be regularly and consistently paid on a regular basis.
As a result, the revenue from both of those would be split evenly between GENU and Tatsumi, and I would not see a single cent of said revenue.

And in case you were wondering, this was entirely my decision and my decision alone.

The only reason I haven’t already gotten around to this is not only due to lack of time (particularly with life stuff and also trying to get this reveal all wrapped up), but also due to potential copyright concerns.

And as for said copyright concerns (specifically regarding distribution of chapters and volumes), it’s a matter I’ve already discussed with the artists. In the very near future, I also want to discuss with you all as to what our current plans are for distribution.

Lastly, this would all be set up to essentially thank the artists for all of their hard work.

I know for sure that their work is going to make this project into something truly special.

So just to recap with you: while there are plans to setup a Patreon and/or Discord subscriptions, this is only to make sure the manga’s artists are paid as handsomely as possible, and I will not be profiting off of that in any personal capacity.

Before I forget: yes, there is a Discord for this project, and it’s regularly used by all three of us.

And in the near-future, I may reach out for help in not only finishing its setup, but also putting together a team of moderators before this Discord server is to go public.

Finally, a first look into the world of the Doom manga.

And also now that I’m here finally with something to show, I also want to take this time to do a bit of extra promotion on Tatsumi’s behalf (he’s one of the manga’s artists).

Currently, Tatsumi is also working on another ongoing manga ATM, and the premise is pretty simple (specifically the premise of slaying dragons in mech suits).

Recently, the announcement has been made that an Italian translation is being worked on as well.

Here would be the original Japanese preview:

https://comic-walker.com/detail/KC_000313_S?episodeType=first

And of course, here is the preview of the Italian translation:

https://online.flippingbook.com/view/242780050/

Other than that, the Doom manga’s production is flowing at a pretty smooth pace so far.

In the near future (hopefully soon), I can finally get you a date as to when the full public reveal is going to be.
