The Doom Master Wadazine #17 - Feat. the Wadazine Awards 2021, interview with Xenaero, Eight Megabytes or Bust, 3DO and Saturn Chronicles, Arrowhead's DM Reviews, the Wadazine Podcast

Shout out to the Secret City Exchange for letting me bring in my Doom 64 cartridge, and opening it up for me, so I could get a picture of its circuit board for "Eight Megabytes or Bust!" And indeed that is a legit picture of a Doom 64 circuit board.

Here's a bonus thing that wasn't mentioned in the article. The circuit board in my Doom 64 cart has copyright text for 1996. Likely Nintendo manufactured a lot of the cartridge circuit boards to get ready for its release in 1996. Doom 64 was supposed to be a launch title for the system, so likely Midway bought a bunch of the circuit boards to get ready. But Doom 64 was delayed until 1997 so it had to wait a bit for its ROM chips to get added. Here's a higher resolution image for anyone wanting a good look: https://farm1.staticflickr.com/441/31005003233_9a40362b67_h.jpg

The circuit boards also have pieces that were cut off along the edges. I think they might be peg slots to keep the boards from moving out of place on the assembly line. Then they had to be cut off to fit into Nintendo's design of the outer cartridge casings. Or perhaps Nintendo had a different design of the outer cartridge case previously?

This is a top tier journalism, not just talking, but actually doing something!

Congrats on the new release!

However, I would like to ask: What map(set) was used in this photo for the article on Angelic Aviary? It looks nice.

Spoiler

When I tried to read it using the wadazine site it still says 16 is the latest issue. Am I the only one with that problem?

Oh and I like the idea of a podcast! When I was listening to the "Doom is Dead" podcast, I was really wanting a podcast to also cover the Doom single-player playing, mapping, and modding (not just multiplayer). You know I would be down to join in on any of the podcasts which cover Doom 64 stuff. Would be cool to talk about Doom engine games as well.

I think 3-person podcasts tend to work the most optimal (two hosts and a guest); like the Quakecast! Having two hosts helps keep the conversation going with interesting questions. I know sometimes places like to live stream their podcasts as well, which does bring the benefit of live chat questions. But Ty from "In The Keep" told me that he prefers not to do it live, so the guest feels more comfortable in speaking and that anything said could be deleted from the final show if needed.

I think avoiding live shows outside of special dates/releases makes the most sense for the international crew that the Wadazine attracts/is composed of. The old Evolution of the WAD series on Twitch definitely benefited from the spontaneity that a live video podcast format can bring, but that also burned out quite quickly because of the livestreaming/unscripted duress and scheduling woes that come with. We could find a middle ground between the entirely scripted nature of a Dean of Doom episode and the entirely off-the-cuff flow of a classic Evolution of the WAD stream.

For my part, I think pre-recorded video podcasts probing/dissecting various maps, sets, map tropes, and general topics of interest could be the way to go. There's a big gap left behind by Evolution of the WAD which sorely needs filling, particularly with "real-time" critical playthroughs of WADs old and new accompanied by deep dives via map/WAD editors. Coordinating these video podcasts with what's covered in adjacently-released Wadazine issues could be the way to go.

Offline recording seems to be the best course of action, considering how diverse and continental distanced most of the Wadazine crew is lol

Btw, I don't think I've heard about the Evolution of the WAD series before, is there any VOD or file to hear?

I like the approach. I've always had interest in discussing anything related to the history of WADs, map making and the relations with Doom.

Taking notes of all the advice. Thanks a lot!

You might notice a few luminaries in the cast, too! The later episodes get into some really nitty-gritty topics like how classic maps utilized Boom features, as well as creator interviews for projects like Double Impact.

I was sort of wishing we might get a few more 'mapping newcomer' awards. But production time was limited, and it's hard to know how much space gets used unless you're a graphic designer.

Excellent wadazine. Read all of them now. They’ve been a very good read.

For the next one could a history of the very first Doom wads be featured?
For issue 19 a feature on wad compilations including the Dwango series maybe.

That's a good and interesting idea I could tackle someday!

Another great issue, was checking almost daily during February, bit worried you'd had to stop or something but so glad to see your carrying on. Keep up the great work, PC gamer aside this is pretty much the best game magazine since the 90s.

PC Gamer is a personal favorite of mine from back in the day, and a big influence on me! Here's an awesome article about Doom that I always love to re-read.

Thanks a lot for the kind words :)

When is the next edition of the magazine coming out ? I can’t wait !

Wish I could give you an exact deadline! Unfortunately, the graphical design department has been quite tight for a while now, and while there's plenty of written material, it takes a while for it to be processed. After 17 free issues of this size and quality, it's a miracle we're still going!

I do recommend you to check out our website: https://wadazine.com/

You'll find some good reading material there in the meantime. And thanks for the kind words!
