I would highly recommend trying out Skillsaw's wads such as Vanguard, Lunatic, Valiant, Ancient Aliens and Heartland.

This thread should also be of help if you want to see which wads are popular

I would also recommend to check out MtPain27's youtube channel where he reviews various classic Doom wads

no end in sight! 4 whole episodes for the ultimate doom. one of the best if you like your doom feeling like a bunch of sprawling dungeons with loads of switches and secrets.

- Rowdy Rudy revenge and Rowdy Rudy ii: Powertrip ( technically a mapset and a megawad, but both are excellent)

I have played many good MegaWADs. I would recommend you to try Alien Vendetta, Scythe, Hellbound, Eviternity, Going Down and Japanese Community Project. They contain challenging, fantastic and fun maps to play :)

That's a really open-ended question, yo.

I'll limit myself to Epic 2, Community Chest 4, and Avactor for Boom-compatible sets and Alfonzone and Pirate Doom for those that require GZDoom or an equivalent port.

Epic 2 has well-implemented difficulty settings leaving it accessible to a wide range of skill levels.  Avactor may be only 11 maps but the size of them will result in a total completion time similar to a megaWAD.  CC4 is overall solid with some standout maps.

As for the other two, Alfonzone has a lot of content with a wide variety of themes.  And Pirate Doom has that spirit of fun with many pirate themed locations to visit and explore.

You should definitely check out DBP37: AUGER;ZENITH! It is THE cyberpunk megawad, celebrating the late '80s/early '90s neon-soaked cyberpunk lore, so there are a tons of references as well (japanese games, Blade Runner etc.). A clear labour of love by men of culture. Not particularly hard, but the atmosphere level is over 9000. It's limit-removing only, which is borderline mind-boggling. There are maps with actual RAIN. -complevel 2

Do you know Akeldama? Completely vanilla stuff, with very strong '90s vibe, but without the '90s clunkiness. It's SO handsome. -complevel 2

Have you heard about Japanese Community Project (JPCP in short)? A very moody mapset, with interesting and beautiful designs, fresh ideas and some levels have particulary explosive gameplay (I'm looking at you, burabojunior). The screenshots doesn't really do justice to it. Needs a limit-removing source port. -complevel 2

Did you see skillsaw's Lunatic before? A very pretty megawad which takes place on the Moon. Short, only 5 maps, but the gameplay is worthy of skillsaw. The final map is a mini slaughter fest, and even though I'm not a fan of that genre, this one is really nice! Boom-compatible source port needed. -complevel 9

Like others mentioned, Eviternity is an absolute quality choice as well, and some environments are simply stunning. Well worth the time, I sank 15 hours into the first playthrough. Because some of the advanced features, it needs MBF compatibility. -complevel 11

Meowgi's Practice Hub is a brilliant megawad, aimed at perfecting speedrunning tricks (SR50, rocket jumps, arch-vile jumps, item bumping, zero press, squeeze glide, 2-shotting cyberdemons, platforming and there's a shooting range). Surely Cacoward-worthy work in my book. Boom-compatible source port needed; your best bet is DSDA-Doom or Woof!. -complevel 9

DSDA doom I think. it’s the only source port that I know contains this feature. Doesn’t support UDMF maps tho.

Enable advanced hud in hud options? sorry I don’t have access to my computer right now so you might have to search for it yourself.

As Nefelibeta mentioned, it's DSDA-Doom, but Woof! also has this kind of advanced HUD (default hotkey F5). Even the limit-removing only Crispy Doom has it, but that looks different.

The frame rate, system clock and GPU statistics are via configured RivaTunerStatisticsServer running in the background.
