Bellzemos Posted March 18, 2022 Hello! I would like to play Heretic on Windows 10, as enhanced as possible. What would I need? I would like 3D models, enhanced lighting, HD textures and the Brutal Heretic RPG mod. And any other stuff that would make it even better, if it exists. :) What is the difference between the v2.2 and v5.0 of the Brutal/RPG mod? Can I download a package that already contains everything needed (except for the Heretic WAD) that can be downloaded somewhere (where)? Thank you! :) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted March 18, 2022 I don't think any such package exists. Besides, while I'm not very familiar with the Brutal Thing mods, AFAIK they feature extra frames of animation, and that would not work right with a 3D model mod since the models would not have these animation frames. Plus models tend to be made for the Doomsday port, and Brutal mods for GZDoom, so that's another compatibility issue. My personal opinion in any case is that the old sprites tend to look better than 3D models, at least in these games, due to the limitations of the animation system (the way monsters move only in 45° angles, the way they rotate instantly, etc.) which are "hidden" by the use of sprites. Models are fine for static geometry like trees and lamps, I guess. 7 Quote Share this post Link to post
CoolerDoomeR Posted March 19, 2022 Hi there, you need to buy the legal heretic wad then you can choose some source ports such as GZDoom, then you can play. I think there is not a 3D Model, but there is some other mods that can be cool. You can search around the web, there is tons of wads and mods such as weapons, shaders, new levels. Good luck. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Bellzemos Posted March 20, 2022 I've bought the Heretic CD in the 90s, still have the booklet and everything. :) Yesterday I found a link to a package (under a Youtube Heretic video), it has Brutal Heretic RPG, HD textures and 3D models, it's quite good. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Bellzemos Posted March 21, 2022 The said package includes the Heretic WAD file as well. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Egregor Posted March 23, 2022 (edited) Once you have your Heretic IWAD you'll also want some other programs as well: Rocket Launcher (Compiler) GZDoom (Engine) https://zdoom.org/downloads The Wayfarer's Tome (Mod) A library of community made Heretic (and Hexen) PWADs And here's a plug for a Heretic episode I am currently working on Oh...and don't forget to try the fifth difficulty setting; "Black Plague Possesses Thee" for fast monsters. The enemies do not regenerate in Heretic! Edited March 23, 2022 by Egregor 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Egregor Posted March 23, 2022 Went back and reread your comments @Bellzemos About Brutal Heretic RPG. I didn't realize something like that existed but here it is: https://nzdoom.net/printthread.php?tid=3 I'll have to give this a try! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
UnknDoomer Posted May 9, 2022 (edited) Well. Personally I might recommend 3 things: 1. Latest GZDoom. In case you are looking for modern featuares, lights, etc. / easy to run. 2. Hi-Res textures. Will work with PWAD's as well if they not overloaded by new features and things - https://www.nexusmods.com/hereticshadowoftheserpentriders/mods/1?tab=description 3. In case of mods might recommend Heretical Doom + monsters add-on - https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=43&t=56762. Basically you can count it as vanilla+ experience. Alex S. Posted May 11, 2022 In my opinion all the "modern enhancements" ruin the aesthetic and art style of the original game. You're better off playing it vanilla if you ask me. For a modern game much like Heretic, check out Graven. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Egregor Posted May 12, 2022 "When it comes to Doom, in my opinion all the 'modern enhancements' ruin the game. You're better off playing Doom2.wad vanilla if you ask me. For a modern game much like Doom 2, check out Doom Eternal." That's how you sound right now, and it is dismissive of dozens of community members efforts. Obviously your entitled to your own opinion, but it runs counter to the point of the doomworld community, which is based around the joy of mapping and modding for the original Doom (and Heretic, Hexen, Strife, and even [I can't believe I'm defending this] Chef Quest). It's not that you shouldn't have this opinion, it's fine. But it does make me ask "why is @Alex S. posting negativity here, when he could have just as easily been posting a positive review of Graven on Graven's steam page?" 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

I wasn't posting negativity. It's an opinion, and the way I phrased it made that clear. You aren't forced to agree with me, having differences is the entire point of discussion. Also, I know you're the creator of some of these high-res options, and I respect and value your work - Same goes for all community contributors. I'm just not fond of playing the game that way, but I mean you no offense. Just relax. PS: "For a modern game much like Doom 2, check out Doom Eternal." <-- Not wrong lmao Edited May 12, 2022 by Alex S. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
