For some people, it really is. And that's fine. PSX Doom is quite near and dear to my heart as well. I don't think I'd call it the best over the PC version, but I'd absolutely call it the best of the console ports when Doom was still commercially relevant. (Doom 64 is the only thing that is better - but Doom 64 is also not a port, so it's disqualified if we're speaking strictly about ports.) Doom Strict and then went over all the options one by one and customized it to my taste (removing bugs, limits etc.). Do be careful, as some of the bugfixing options will completely break old maps if you disable the flag. I've had problems in particular with "buggier stair building" and find shorter texture". The former in particular will break old maps if disabled but will also break some of the ZDoom-specific maps if enabled. 3 hours ago, idbeholdME said: The main point I was trying to make was that a lot of people will just run GZDoom and click New Game, without ever even checking the options. IIRC, the display options also require tuning to make it look like Doom should, which often leads to seeing "filtered" textures in gameplay videos on the internet and such. Thanks for clarifying, I actually agree with you on this. I sort-of understand why some of the modern source ports (both GZDoom and Doomsday, and I think also Legacy) have things like "texture" filtering (it gets applied to everything though, not just textures) on by default, but I wish they didn't. 1 hour ago, blackthorn said: As far as the console ports go, fine, but I’ve definitely seen more than one YouTuber proclaim it to be the best version, including over the PC original (usually with some reasoning based around the soundtrack). I love PSX Doom (and I ended up liking it MUCH more than I thought I would), and I love what Aubrey Hodges did with the soundtrack, but I think I still prefer the PC version over any other. Amusingly, I remember reading something about that "best Doom yet" quote attributed to Romero, and how when he was asked about it much later he disputed the statement and said he still considered the PC version the best. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
