Guess the Map! [31st Secret edition] (New hints!)

Recommended Posts

Previous editions: 15 (click on it to find the rest)

Congratulations, you've found the secret edition! Looks like it's been built by a lazy ass procrastinator, rather than demons. You wonder what the theme of this corner of maps will be.... well here is the preamble, now to the point! The 31st edition is a special treat as per last minute decision, this time the maps belong to secret and/or bonus slots, with some to be considered additional or extra -- not included in the main wad. Now because it's a special restriction from my part, the number of maps will be limited to 16, so as to not overdo things. The rules are the following:

- Answers MUST be hidden in spoilers, no exceptions. If you don't use the spoiler option, your guesses won't count.

- Assistance is fine if you aren't completely sure about your guess, we're only strict about the first rule.

New hints: March 23rd

Answers: March 26th

Spoiler

3. SION

JoGRb2G.png

Spoiler

1. After a congested BFG trial against archviles in the northern room, you can either choose the normal exit or an alternative neon purple sign saying "Thanks for playing"

2. It's really tempting to use the former archvile to send you to the health spheres on the corners

Spoiler

3. TARD

15

Spoiler

1. The core concept is about revisiting parts of the previous two episodes, now with a hellish/corrupted twist

Spoiler

03 - Umbreion Nils from Tangerine Nightmare. I still haven't survived that C-shaped area for myself, it's an absolutely horrific fight.

04 - Ossuarium Exoterre from Ancient Aliens. I'll admit it, the hint gave it away... it's been too long since I played AA.

09 - RevoltloveR from Thomas van der Velden's Revolution! - or more specifically, the bonus map he made for the MIDI Pack many years later. That skull is instantly recognizable, but so is the map's name in the top-right... Oops...

14 - Hyperspace from Stardate 20X6. Saw decino play this crazy thing a while back, would love to try it myself some day.

Pretty fun to try to figure this out again, knowing it was secret or bonus maps only definitely helped a lot when it came to narrowing it down. All of these guesses were with hints as I'm apparently awful at identifying automaps!

I spotted half a dozen then deduced all the others by various methods that my conscience will not allow me to claim are guesses. Detective work is too much fun.

Spoiler

01 Immediately recognised, I know this map really well, I remember being extremely annoyed by the idea of making the secret exit inaccessible unless in co-op and then discovering the window jump that allows clearing the whole map, even if you only get one chance at it.
02 Immediately recognised, another map I've played repeatedly over the years, very memorable lighting and shadow casting.
05 Immediately recognised the layout as being one of the various Plutonia sequels' recreation of MAP31 Cyberden. The first one I looked through was Plutonia 2, which turned out to be correct, it was either that or PRCP.
06 I realised what this was after about 10 minutes of staring at it. I did think the middle square with four ledges was more like TNT28 Heck, but after a few more glances my brain threw up d2twid as an alternative to the various TNT remakes.
10 I immediately thought "Switcheroom" and from there it was a trivial matter to find the slot.
14 Another one where I realised what it was after 10 minutes staring, somehow I had missed there was a map31 in this wad when it was released and didn't play the map until summer 2020.

03 The author signature and date narrows it down to one or two wads, which the clues confirm. Since it is allowed to check guesses, I looked through the wad to find the right map.
07 I made an educated guess of Eternal Doom as an old wad with a credits map that is technically in a separate file. Since it is allowed to check guesses, I looked through the wad to find the right map.
08 "MIDI pack" implies a number of things, one of which is TVR. But I know TVR very well and am certain this map layout is not in it. However a few more moments thought recalled that TV himself had endorsed the midi pack by making a map for it. Since it is allowed to check guesses, I looked through the wad to find the right map.

11 Lucky search for maps with "basement" in the title.
12 This is probably from a TC since Doomguy does not have specific evil enemies that escape from him. I guessed Batman and it turned out to be right.

04 From sight, this is obviously a Skillsaw map, or someone from the same school of mapping at any rate. Now, galileo has carefully listed all the wads he has ever played in his Doomworld profile so it is a simple matter to Ctrl+F "CIEN". This immediately turns up "Ancient Aliens". Since it is allowed to check guesses, you know how the rest of this sentence goes by now.
09 I was sure I had never played this or I would have remembered the northeast spiral tunnel, but the name clue "ADES" made me reconsider the previous "gray" clue, and I thought "50 shades?" No wonder it seemed familiar, I have not played 50shades, but it seems to come up a lot in these contests, so I have looked through the wad often enough to be gaining familiarity with the layouts nonetheless.
13 I spent ages staring at this as I was sure I had seen it before but no name sprang to mind until the second clue suggested it was a console map. So I have seen it before because I have looked through the console maps several times. (Is there a conversion of this map you can play on a real computer, like d64d2?)
15 Ctrl+F "PRIS" on galileo's wads played list (see #04).
16 Ctrl+F "NATI" on galileo's wads played list (see #04, #15).

Taking a swing finding that I'm not good a recognizing maps by the automap.  Barring unusual stuff like map 8 from JPCP.

All guesses used at least one hint.

Spoiler

1. Memento Mori map 31  Got it after the second hint.

7. Eternal Doom CREDITS map

10. (redacted)  Dammit, Warrens was my wild guess.  I got nothing

14. Stardate 20x6 map 31  Watch me miss this for misspelling the WAD name.

And the answers are...

01. Memento Mori, MAP31 (NuMetalManiak, SiFi270, Naan, SilverMiner, NaZa, finnks13, RjY, Crusader No Regret)

02. Dawn of the Dead, E1M9 (SiFi270, NaZa, NuMetalManiak, RjY)

03. Tangerine Nightmare, MAP10 (Cammy, NuMetalManiak wad guess, Nefelibeta, finnks13, RjY)

04. Ancient Aliens, MAP32 (Cammy, NuMetalManiak, Nefelibeta wad guess though it's "aaliens", finnks13, NaZa totally legal answer, RjY, Shepardus)

05. Plutonia 2, MAP31 (NuMetalManiak, Nefelibeta, SiFi270, SilverMiner, finnks13, RjY)

06. D2TWID, MAP33 (NuMetalManiak, SiFi270, SilverMiner, finnks13, RjY)

07. Eternal Doom, credits map (NuMetalManiak, SiFi270, finnks13, NaZa, RjY, Shepardus, Crusader No Regret)

08. Revolution! or TVR! midi pack, MAP33 (NuMetalManiak, Nefelibeta, SiFi270, Naan, SilverMiner, NaZa, finnks13, RjY, Shepardus)

09. 50 Shades of Graytall, MAP18 (Cammy, NuMetalManiak, finnks13, RjY)

10. Switcheroom, E2M9 (NuMetalManiak wad guess but wrong slot, RjY, Shepardus)

11. Hellevator, MAP31 (NuMetalManiak, finnks13 presumed correctly, RjY)

12. Batman Doom, MAP31 (NuMetalManiak, SiFi270, SilverMiner, NaZa, RjY, Shepardus)

13. PSX Doom, MAP58 The Mansion (NuMetalManiak, SiFi270, NaZa map guess but which console though?, RjY)

14. Stardate20x6, MAP31 (Cammy, NuMetalManiak, Nefelibeta, SiFi270, finnks13, RjY, Crusader No Regret)

15. Uprising, MAP31 (NuMetalManiak wad guess, finnks13, RjY)

16. Doom: Damnation, E3M9 (NuMetalManiak wad guess, RjY)

And so the secret edition concludes with probably one of the best outputs as at least two people guessed everything correctly!

Fun fact, the screenshot from 13 is actually Kaiser's conversion of the PSX map to PC vanilla doom, which can be found here. I simply assumed that most everyone would say it's the PSX one, which wouldn't be far from correct anyways, and I don't have any psx doom editors installed to take a snap of the actual console map.

On another note, I noticed that most people who guessed the Eternal Doom map said it's 34, I thought I was the only one that imported the map on that slot for myself so that I didn't need to load additional wads. RjY's explanation about my personal list made me laugh a bit.

Many thanks. Should have figured that if anyone had made a PC version of a console map it would be Kaiser. Now I see he did the whole set.

FWIW I called the Eternal Doom credits map MAP34 because the wiki has it in that slot. Even though it goes on to say it is supplied as MAP01 in a separate file. I figured there must be a reason for this numbering, so just now I redownloaded the whole wad package. It turns out the full eternal.txt, inside the zip, also lists it as MAP34. So the creators officially denoted it that way. Mystery solved?

Damn, I didn’t even bother answering because all maps looked so foreign… but I should have known #3 and #4, having played both of them recently :(
