Imitating volumetric lights

Pebble

Question

Hello all, I have been playing Doom on and off for many years and dabbled in Doom Builder for a couple days several years back.  Having recently jumped back into said dabbling I've been learning a lot, but there is something escaping me on the topic of lighting.

In Tormentor667's various maps among others I have noticed what I assume is a mid texture imitating a light shaft, and was wondering how this is achieved.  Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

You actually already said the answer:

You assumed correctly. That's all it is, a mid texture pegged/offset to the ceiling. The texture itself is just a solid colour with a gradient alpha. Absolutely nothing special about it at all.

This only works in ports that support a texture alpha channel, of course.

Thanks for the response friend, I had a hunch it related to alpha channels and will do some experimenting.
