The Old Bean Factory

Recommended Posts

hey man, great map. I loved the exploration and doomcute. Genuinely made me laugh. I found a ton of secrets on my first playthrough, too.

My only criticisms would be that the map is a little too easy. The only really challenging encounter was at the subway station. I never even used the Plasmagun.

Especially the latter half was easy. Once you get the yellow key and get into the main building, you only encounter low tier enemies (and one baron). I was expecting a big climatic endbattle or a bossbattle, and was surprised to find the exit.

That said, I did have a lot of fun!

Here's the video:

Thank you so much for playing my wad, I had a lot of fun watching :)
I agree, the map is pretty easy, I tried to err on the side of ease rather than making frustrating encounters, more about mowing stuff down and picking up stuff. That said, with your feedback I think I can allow myself to make more challenging encounters without worrying about it being too alienating.
You're also very right about the ending, it really does become a real cinch once you're outta the subway station, just like you said. I'll keep that in mind for the next wad, to keep the ramp going up.

Thank you again for playing and giving me feedback, I'm stoked you had a good time overall. :^)

These beans are delicious! Fantabulous work, kwc! I loved all the texture work (Duke3D sprites and such tickling my nostalgia lobes) and your DoomCute skills are razor-sharp! Some fun combat scenarios to overcome while our man Lee Jackson rocks out in the background and it's just an overall terrific little map that feels like a direct spiritual successor to good ol' Doom City; it walked so The Old Bean Factory could run! Great stuff, fam. :^)

I had tons of fun with this map, and the details here and there were really good and tasteful, like the melted candle.

I found 6 secrets and missed 20 monsters when I was at the very end, used IDDT to find 2 more secrets, and glad I did

because the "Armory" secret is epic.

Thanks for this map, loved every inch of it.

If you can't tell I friggin love this map.  Reminds me of Ashes: 2063 which is my favourite mod.  So much nice detail, combat isn't too difficult but the flow is fun, fun secrets.  And this is your second level?!  I gotta try out your other one and keep my eye on anything your release in the future!  Thanks!  Also,

Spoiler

is there a way to get the last 4 monsters in that Seinfeld secret?  I love it lol but I could only get in through noclip.  I would like to UV max the level but maybe leaving 4 monsters is a UV max?  Also,1856700116_Screenshot(91).png.56a9bc6f8d49dd6f86289f396fd56a96.png

What in the heck is going on out here?? 😆

edit: oops got your name wrong at first in the video title, I think I played something by YMB earlier 🤣

Regarding that one unmarked secret

Spoiler

check out beyond those other broken windows, you might find your shot there.

Just finished playing on UV.  Great map!  Lots of fun.  I loved the baron exiting the toilet with the flushing sound :-)  Brought back some good Duke Nukem memories.

My only question is whether some of the secrets are supposed to be super obscure?

Spoiler

The armory room for example, I think I just stumbled onto that one by pushing the phones like 10 times or something? I'm not even really sure what it was that finally opened the door.

In the end, I did IDDT but never did figure out how to open some of the secret areas.  Made it impossible to UV-max, but no big deal.  Looking forward to your next map!

@CrueCut I remember having an internal debate as to how to handle telegraphing that secret. There is a clue in the map, in fact, although in hindsight maybe it too was too subtle. I erred on the side of making that secret neigh-impossible because, as I thought at the time, the rewards from that secret trivialize pretty much the rest of the map's combat further than it already is.
There were a number of missteps in hindsight, although I've been really happy with all of your feedback and I've felt really humbled by all the nice things people have said. Thank you so much for checking it out :D

Just UV maxed it with a nice walkthrough, I actually think the gunshop secret may be hard blind but you don't even need to see the hint.  You can just brute force it, though in my next video I actually discover it while playing lol.  I love it, maybe you could make the text pop a liiiil more??  I definitely agree that it trivializes a lot later... but it's such an awesome secret!!

OK... Fine... I'll.... "Come Get Some".... Beans... from an Old Bean Factory because ... I'm all out of beans.

Tune in later when I enter an edit update.... Brought to you by Sardine Helper, Casserole isn't just for tuna.

Follow up:

Okay! I didnt beat it, cuz I usually do Hardcore style runs on HMP even if they arent geared for it, and made it a decent ways I think. I had a lot of fun and had no idea how to open the gun store. =DD

This was a fun map I enjoyed it. I like maps that take place in towns and cities we don't see enough of those it's always tech bases. A little glitchy with the mods i used but still fun.

Very cool map. 20 minutes flew by like it was 7 minutes which is a good thing. I should have played without mods though because I noticed some dehacked stuff broke after watching bios video. I still hope it helps :)

whoa, I didn't know about the windows opening. So that's the true way of getting into that secret nice. My mods broke the map a bit but it was still lots of fun. I thought the zombie apocalypse would fit well with the theme of breaking into a factory for beans.

I liked the map a lot. Great visuals and some nice ambushes!

In the last room I had expected something like a Cyberdemon coming out of a crumbling bean silo or so. Would be some nice climax that currently didn't happen.

But still: a very enjoyable map.

This map was very cool. Discovvering the secrets was easy for someone who was remotely observant. I found it especially hilarious that once you see "Hey there" on the director's desk, the toilet flushes and he bursts out, after he was alerted. That, and all the other little details and posters of other games and other stuff that couldn't be seen with Doom's low-res were just so cool!

Hey folks! Thank you all so much :) Sorry for being late to respond, had an Anthropology Essay to complete D:

Everyone has been so kind and the feedback in both text and video form has been both generous and helpful, it's been very validating to watch folks pouring over the details I left.

Cheers again to you all :)

Dude, I loved the map from start to finish!

It's one of those to lose track of time playing: great battles and delicious easter eggs.

Nevertheless, I didn't like the happy song so much (sorry, Lee Jackson), as it seems out of place with the somewhat depressing color palette.

(but of course that's just like, you know, my depressive opinion, man).

It's already in my favorite maps folder.

Thank you!
