Thelokk Posted April 2, 2022 (edited) CHANGELOG: - The rfhelltx respack's alignment and switch issues have been fixed, courtesy of @Jark and @Shawn. You can download the new respack in this post. - A config file with instructions, to keep your rfhelltx nice and orderly, courtesy of @PeceMan. - If you signed and you're here for the juicy info, here is the post. - Discord invite link Fancy seeing you here! If you walked past this door, either you are a fan of Swift; or you are, like me, an insatiable hound for all that is horrific bloody, frigthening and so on. The debate whether Doom is a horror game has been raging for decades - why don't we settle it once and for all the best way we know... by mapping! Why are you doing this? Been told 'if you want a community project so badly, make your own' one time too many. The basics: It's all very simple, really - make the bloodiest, scariest, most frightening map you can muster, and share it for all the Doom world to shake in terror at it. 'That's awfully broad' you say? that's exactly the point! 'Horror' means something different to each fan of the genre, and to each Doom player. Maybe you shivered in fear at the Alien-inclined solitude of Death's Dichotomy's 'LV-31'; maybe you just like to see the blood flow, be it from a (non-damaging) wellspring, be it from an Icon of Sin's exposed head; maybe you find the tongue-in-cheek, House of 1000 Corpses- like over the top chaos of Bludgeonator to be the height of Doom gore. Whichever your inclination, there is only one rule: make it scary, make it gory, make it horror. The rules: Ok, I lied, there are rules. But they're simple, really. Easy stuff. - until April 16 I'll be taking signups. How do you signup, you say? simple: "@Thelokk I'm in". That's all that's required. No other banter, comment, DM, 'oh sounds like fun' will get you a spot. Only that single, magic, four words phrase. I will then put you down in this OP, and you'll count as having claimed a spot. There is no limit to the number of spots available, whether it's 32 or one person and me, the project will happen. However, after April 16, the only way to get into the project will be by claiming a relinquished spot. If needed (probably not) I will make a waitlist of all those who asked to join after April 16, and progressively @them if and when a spot is left vacant. No proof of work of any kind is to be shown between now and April 16, or even right after. Shortly after April 16 I will put down a submission template and a date for a first draft of the map to be submitted, certainly well into June or even July. No point in hurrying. SIGNUPS: 1- @Origamyde 2- @Pistoolkip 3- @PasokonDeacon 4- @Solmyr 5- @Engired 6- @Thelokk / @Jark 7- @Bri 8- @Scypek2 9- “Lalliix “Silvirat” Colden” 10- @SCF 11- @Shawn 12- @RiviTheWarlock 13- @Helm 14- @Salmon 15- @Large Cat 16- @tib_ 17- @Parkolnaught 18- @Maxwellk421 19- @RastaManGames 20- @whybmonotacrab 21- @MFG38 22- @Death Bear 23- @Misty 24- @CblBOPOTKA 25- @Pechudin 26- @PinkFlamingo 27- @Mancubussy 28- @muumi 29- @SilverMiner 30- @SirPootis 31- @Snaxalotl 32- @CittyKat112 33- @PeceMan 34- @epicyolomaster420 35- @PrismaticFrog 36- @kwc 37- @Snikle 38- @Dubium Waitlist Theme / genre / map specifics Format: MBF21, Doom 2, targeting DSDA-Doom and all other ports that support the format and UMAPINFO. As mentioned above, the theme of the CP is the whole bloody galaxy that revolves around the greasy axis of 'horror', 'gore', 'scare' and so on. I'm leaving it very open ended by design - give it your own spin! Equally, there is not set mapping genre: run n' gun, adventure, tricks and traps, slaughter, all is fair game. No minimum or maximum size, no mandatory monster count. Given the theme, I'll even accept nomonster maps - provided you can make it interesting and exciting. Note that this is not meant to be a speedmapping project. Take your time, once you signed up you'll have more than plenty, trust me. Also, I'll put no hard limit on the number of maps, but I suggest one strong offering to many lesser ones. Open to all mapping levels - new mappers extra welcome. The resources: Aside from the good old workhorses that are Doom 2's stock textures, I have selected @Fletcher`'s rfhelltx as our other resource pack: it's woefully underutilized, and you'll find it provides plenty of... ahem, meat for all your gross out mapping needs. No other textures allowed except for skies - we'll worry about streamlining that later on. MIDI: as you please. 90s games, your own, your Doom buddy's. Aaaand... This should be all for now! Let's see if there is any interest and, whether so or otherwise, looking forward to seeing you around! But - but... you're a board newbie! how do I know you can handle this? I could tell you I have lead many a non-Doom community project both online and in real-life (I was an art gallery coordinator); I could tell you lots of reasons that would not convince you a iota. So I will give you the one, single, irrefutable proof that - occasional hiccups notwithstanding - I can definitely handle this, and get people to deliver whether they like it or not. I used to be a middle school teacher. Enuff said. Edited April 25, 2022 by Thelokk 39 Quote Share this post Link to post

PasokonDeacon Posted April 2, 2022 @Thelokk, I'm in. With a post as clear and organized as that, I doubt anyone would want or need to see your professional experience! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Pistoolkip Posted April 2, 2022 @Thelokk I'm in Not sure what I'll be making but the horror theme appeals to me. Let's make some weird stuff 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Thelokk Posted April 2, 2022 (edited) The first of hopefully not too many, hopefully not too annoying bumps to get this show properly on the road - signups open, I guarantee showers of gore, fun times, or both (depending on your inclinations). Scypek2 Posted April 2, 2022 That texture pack looks really cool, and I may have some semblance of an idea. @Thelokk I'm in. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Thelokk Posted April 3, 2022 (edited) First few hot days so I feel a bit of piping can be forgiven - don't worry DWers, I won't be bumping the thread as often as the days go by. I actually wanted to take the chance to answer publicly a couple of questions I've been asked in DMs: Why signups? Can't I just drop a map when it's done? Multiple reasons. First of all, research has shown that even a small gesture as 'signing up' in the relatively consequence-free environment of the web does subconsciously create a modicum of commitment. Sneaky psychology, really. Second, I'm not saying that this project should necessarily have a community built around it, but... it kind of irks me when, as I've seen happen in other CPs, someone who hasn't even touched the thread for its whole existence swoops in, drops a map 15 mins before the deadline, and then is never heard from again - no matter how big their name is. Maybe it's just a peeve of mine, but I wouldn't want this to become that kind of project. Side note: later on I will open a Discord server but, for all intents and purposes, this thread will be where all "official" communication will happen. So, make sure to follow the thread. If it doesn't happen here, it didn't happen. Quality threshold? Low, but not null. As I mentioned, no restrictions in mapper experience, size, lenght or gameplay either in an upward or downward direction. Give it your best shot, you'll have plenty of time to have your map thoroughly playtested - I'm sure we can count on other participants, as well as the kindness of the usual playtesting suspects. As a project lead, however, I reserve the right to eventually send maps back to the drawing board (never outright reject) in three borderline cases: - Your map includes questionable material. No, Wolfenstein Nazi textures are not questionable material. We all know what questionable material is, don't we? I know it sounds silly and lectury but, believe it or not, I've seen it happen. Let's not. - Your map is clearly, unmistakably, without a shadow of doubt a single afternoon's rushed job cobbled together to make deadlines. If you really want in and couldn't make for any reason the singup deadline, or any other subsequent deadline, I'd much rather we have a chat and figure something out. - Your map completely and utterly ignores the provided texture pack's exclusive textures. It might not be OTEX, but it's a very good pack: versatile, on spot with out theme, and compact, no useless recolors, just the right stuff in the right places. Thanks as always, and see you soon! Helm Posted April 4, 2022 (edited) @Thelokk I'm in. I want to see if I can make a spookers map too and MBF21 is my jam anyway and you talk a good game <3 Edited April 4, 2022 by Helm 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Large Cat Posted April 4, 2022 @Thelokk I'm in. My few maps up to now have all aimed for 100% lean action. This is the reason I need to try out making a more exploration-focused map. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Salmon Posted April 4, 2022 @Thelokk, I'm in. I like horror quite a bit although gore's not usually my thing. But I have an idea I want to explore and I need more MBF21 practice. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

Thelokk Posted April 6, 2022 (edited) Still a bunch of days remaining to sign up for this! Figured I'd take advantage of this little bump to point out a little thing I forgot in the OP: In the spirit of Gorehounds of Doom being a community effort, collaborative maps are welcome and encouraged. If you have a buddy whom you want to take along for the ride, by all means do! (In fact, as a side note, I would love for my own contribution to be a collaborative effort. I've been focusing lately on things placement and difficulties tuning so, if you're a 'Doom architect' (and I know there are some, I've seen the threads) feel free to sign up for the project, unless you're already in of course, and throw me a DM.)
