What do you think are the cacodemon holes?

Recommended Posts

Just like what Romero said: can't talk about these holes.

Back when the Caco was a head of astral dreadnout... one was a part of breathing system and second of digesting system. Like when you cut someone's head off.

I would say the Caco's body is more like the Beholder's, only the face of the Cacodemon was inspired by the Astral Dreadnout.

He talked about them by not talking about them... does this have a name?

The closest I know of is preterition or apophasis, but that's more "talking about something while asserting you don't"; e.g. "I will not talk about these holes, but they are just for flying around."

Something funny is that I've never actually seen these holes (or noticed) because I can never really get behind a cacodemon mid game without him noticing me

It's a vent for a lighter-than-air gas bladder that allows them to fly. One absorbs air and transforms it into gas, the other ejects gas to propel them through the air.

Damn, you beat me to it. I am also a proponent of the Cacodemon fly bladder theory! I also think that the gurgling noise in the cacodemon's death wail is the sound of that organ deflating

In my head-canon, these are what left of a spine and a throat. It's known that cacodemon sprite is based on astral dreadnought head, so maybe the demon that we see is only the part of the original demon. It would also explain the name, where "caco" means "bad". What if the original demon body was broken or unsuitable for battle (too bad for battle), so the only operational part (the head) was cut off?

Pain Elemental's holes are the same. It would make sense if Pain Elementals were made of cacodemons by stitching other demons' parts onto them, so new parts cause constant pain. This would reflect the pain elemental sprite being created from other demon sprites.

You're the second person I've seen to come to this conclusion, I believe @Megalyth was the first one. He even suggested such weirdly specific anatomic accuracy might be a byproduct of Adrian Carmack's stint at the morgue. Congrats, you reaffirmed this theory in my mind.

One’s for cacapoo and the other is for birthing cacobabies. The fireball is the cacaopee so it pees out of its mouth. The secret alternate projectile that went unused is its cacoseed. So they reproduce by shooting cacoseed into each other’s mouths. Gross.

The two holes at the back of the Cacodemon are where the Cacussy is located.

I don't care what the holes are called or what they are for. I simply love the game of Doom, that's all. No offense is intended towards any fellow Doomers. Thank you.

Body? What body?

I think that big hole is for pooping. They eat space marines, and of course they have to somehow get rid of what their body can't digest.

USB ports for recharging.

You can also use them to configure or move files into or out of the Caco.

The top hole is for refilling its air bladder, so it can float. The bottom hole is for expelling gas. And I may have that wrong, depending on the sphincter pressure of the lower hole, it might be that the lower hole sucks in air, and the upper hole is used for regulating pressure. Like a bleed-off valve. Which makes more sense, use the more constrictive valve to regulate pressure. Either way, I think it's a gas pressure system, not a reproductive tract.

It doesn't eat anything, it's a demon, it doesn't need to eat. It bites you if it can't shoot balls of energy at you. It has no digestive tract, it's a giant floating demon that shoots lightning. It doesn't have to shit, it doesn't have to reproduce, it's born and waits for something to eat or kill. And I would wager the Cacodemon doesn't actually eat anything, it just bites it until its dead. Just like all the other demons, it doesn't need human flesh to survive, it just attacks until the threat is gone.

One Maw to fry them all, One Eye to find them,
One Hole to inflate them and One Hole to propel them,

In the lands of Hell where the Cacos fly.
