yakfak Posted April 8, 2022 (edited) every time I finish a bloody level I immediately put it on idgames and wipe my memory of it! the last time I put out a multi-level pack (either doggy or theresa? or tivauri, the most unloved of all giggle) I did that so spontaneously they didn't really get played or remembered. it's time I had an anti-hype thread :)))))))))) concentrating on doom 1 cos I'm not really designing for heavy weapons gameplay. I like shooting shotgun guys in the dark, never seeing the sky, doom.exe sidedefs and visplanes limits, not being able to save the game, etc. there are a lot of really good slaughter mappers using the new dsda-doom parameters and whose work I value and I'm going in the precise opposite direction from that. so we're aiming at chocolate doom. so these'll work in your retro port of choice and will have been tested in chocorenderlimits. some of these maps are rescues or fully-formed maps from almost a decade ago. some of them I finished yesterday, most of them are yet to be made! will also be making midis, or repurposing old midis I've made for the project. we'll have custom props and floors. also wanna kick out the zombieman and the spiderdemon in favour of some simple turret enemies ala Mapgame. (that'll be tight; i'm used to BEX, dunno how many vanilla pointers I have to work with...) i don't want to say "no custom textures" cos I wanna practise my drawing? but I won't be making traditional doom-y wall textures as much as pictures to be inset into them. one last thing: some of the old wads I've recovered have insane approaches to difficulty levels. I'll be placing those in the secret slots, inaccessible from normal gameplay, cos being on HNTR and visiting one of them would result in more cyberdemons than you might expect. stuff we have (to be arranged into two full Doom episodes): "One Magpie" (no midi yet): umgd.zip "Needle and Thread" (needs some enemies replaced and a different midi): zerty1.zip basic layout and progression idea: EPISODE ONE: 01: "A New Way of Drinking" (unfinished) music: SO DAMN SOAKED - sodamnso.mid (finished! this is one of the coolest midis i have ever made) doomguy post-furry awakening getting demoted to the engineer corps and fucking up a reactor theme, everything under construction - short but unfair berserking map you can exit any time by drowning, projected to be next-to-impossible to uv max even when you know what everything does and where everything is. wanna front-load something hideous and user-unfriendly so that twitch streamers don't think it's amenable to being bullshitted through, this is for messed-up people only lol 02: (mash some abandoned stuff around One Magpie and call it something like) "Dreadful Realization" (base map done, extras unfinished) music: INSANE CLOUDBURST - icb.mid (finished!) doomguy finding that acquiring new levels of consciousness reveals new levels of mental pressure - uncomfortable fights, darkness 03: "Ruled By Men Who Think They're Clint Eastwood" (insanely unfinished - needs connecting, exits, rebalancing, the sky blacking out etc.) music: demin.mid (finished! I wonder if I ever named it?) doomguy discovering tivauri is alive, finding a secret outpost inside the UAC building that was her old operating theatre - bizarre rules, cybies, this is easily expansive and confusing enough to hide a secret exit inside 04: (a new map to introduce possible new demoness enemy, has no title because I really want to call it "I Hate England") (not yet started) music: whatever suits it (undecided/unstarted - possibly gasping.mid (unfinished)) i don't know how to tie the map 3 "a demon has been watching me since I killed the icon" theme with map 5's "i really need to leave the UK" theme yet 05: "Sunbarque" (base map finished, needs Doom 1 texturing and placement and 100% less mancubi) music: PEACE POT MICROYACHT - ppmy.mid (finished!) medium-sized map with lots of secrets including a reverse route through the areas - mowing down bazillions of shotgunners, see the sky for the first time, try to make it look like you're getting on a boat and leaving the UK at the end 06: "We Just Came to Get the Facts" (based on one of my old spiderx.wads, insanely unfinished) music: needs new music and this one has to kick ass because it's bookended by orchestral, slow, often drumless pieces) doomguy gets impounded by some naval commission and his/her pstd past resurfaces. you're taken to a big undergound interrogation facility and you get asked about the old you over and over and over and over and over and over. of course tivauri is the demon queen of spies so she finds out you're here as soon as you bust out 07: "Needle and Thread" (too beautiful to edit, mostly. gotta rebalance the enemies and get rid of the alt difficulty) music: NOV. TO FEB. - etrio001.mid (finished!) tivauri grabs all the information streams that hold reality together and tugs on 'em - a sprawling toxic ordeal with a central speedrunning idea: a mandatory nukage gauntlet and the skippable red key which gives you access to a pair of radsuits which allow you to play it safe. also full of ridiculous secrets and unnecessary places to go like any real MAP 07 should be 08: "Get Out of the Tower" (unstarted) music: DAILY HAZARDOUS MATERIAL INCIDENT - hazmati.wad (finished!) second new enemy "Aspect of Tivauri" (which I've actually been working on and drawing, wow) appears en masse as the only enemy. imagining semi-concentric arenas that don't trap you in, but rather makes you wait for all the demons to file in from outside before you can get around them secret: (untitled thing, base is PSAMF.wad which is an ungodly collection of places and I've forgotten which order yr meant to tackle zem) music: who knows theme: chalk outline of the queen EPISODE TWO: not convinced this will ever exist lol obviously don't speedrun these or put them on dsda since they're not finalized. but i'd be happy for you to download these, test 'em, suggest names or stuff which could be streamlined (within reason, don't wanna make these too gameplay-positive, they are by me lol) more to come (i found so many abandoned pieces of junk from 2015 in an old subfolder I could just put out an episode now but everything needs tinkering with!) thank you for reading so many parenthesized sentences! yakfak Posted April 15, 2022 (edited) necessary PSA i think One Berserk Pack is a fulfilling selection of weapons (this is a map I'm working on for this pack called "A New Way of Drinking", blood everywhere, no merciful range combat. it's currently a lot easier and a lot bigger than I made it seem here but that's cos I'm using the mouse in bed lol also dug up an old scrap for a map which was called, I think, "Ruled by Men Who Think They're Clint Eastwood" it's vanilla-shaped but includes some hacked-together new textures which need to be taken out back n shot very puzzly and obscure plus it features running across scalding nukage. uh, as usual if you played Needle and Thread, it's _kinda_ like that except it's packed with barons plus it has red lines across the floor which if crossed lower elevators which give some Cybies a chance to hear you make noise it is in an unplayable state and i doubt it has an exit more of a big idea pad that needs connecting - you'll need to IDSPISPOPD and traipse around to see stuff hopetest.zip don't question the zzzv editing processes lol and good luck working out how the puzzle works runs fine in doom.exe) Edited April 15, 2022 by yakfak 5 Quote Share this post Link to post
