Metal_Slayer Posted April 9, 2022 (edited) As important as Doom 3, it seems to be the Doom game with less "post release" content (other than 64, which I also am going to talk about), and even if it doesn't match the quality of the other games, it can't be the game gets re-released every once in a while and thats it. Compared to other games in the series in the series it has the most bare bones re-releases, the first console port for Xbox changed some stuff and downgraded the graphics, but it still was the same game, it also added co-op that wasn't in the original release. It also had an expansion and a mobile rail shooter spin-off, and that was all the Doom 3 until 2012. The BFG edition, the first "remaster" that released 8 years later doesn't deserve being called that, it looks almost the same (maybe even worse) and it makes a lot of changes that are not for the best (if you are reading this you probably know), it also has a new episode that is good, but it has some of the same problems of the base game, and it doesn't help that everything on it is an asset recycling. Everything became even worse after the release of DOOM since then it was the slow paced horror game of a series of fast paced action games. The next re-release was just the BFG Edition with less content and after that a VR version of it that for some reason is a PS4 exclusive, and the only thing it has going for is the diegetic UI redesign. Now, what I think this game really deserves is a proper remaster, and more important, it needs options, choose between the game like it originally played or the way BFG plays, with the current port the BFG is the only option without modding the game. Another thing it needs is the add-ons option Doom and Quake have, the Doom 3 modding isn't as open for everyone as classic Doom is, but it exists, and there is quite a lot that could be added, from rebalancing mods to full maps and campaigns. Anyway, I still want to add some things to this topic, but not today. [Part 2] Ok, so the other game I want to talk about is Doom 64, this one was released on Nintendo 64 and then re-released together with Doom Eternal, the port is fine, there are some options, but not as many as someone would expect from a Nightdive Studios remaster, it also has some problems that could be fixed with a patch, like the Baron of Hell dealing less damage than in the original, the jump cheat existing but not working. There are rumors that a patch was coming, but Bethesda said it wasn't necessary because the game only was re-released for the Lost Levels that tie into the plot of DOOM and Doom Eternal. The Lost Levels are kind of like the Lost Mission, there's nothing new, but the levels are well designed, but it really could have had something new, like one of the monsters that were cut. It might be asking too much, but the Quake remaster got add-ons, a new episode, multiplayer with crossplay online, updated graphics and a Horde Mode. Gez Posted April 9, 2022 My pipe-dream Doom 3 remaster would be, as I believe I already said in a previous topic that I can't find back at the moment: All of the official Doom 3 content. That includes the original campaigns without cuts, and the BFG extra campaign. Allow to play in original mode or in BFG mode. Split that option along renderer (the brighter lights of BFG, which apparently were actually a bugfix) and gameplay (extra ammo, armor-mounted flashlight) categories so that it can be fully customized to one's liking. Be compatible with both data formats, the original PK4 and the new, so that mods for both the original Doom 3 and the BFG edition can be loaded. Bring back multiplayer! Adapt the deathmatch bots from Quake 3 Arena if needed to make the deathmatch maps playable, and bring the coop Doomguy from the old Xbox port. To that one could add VR mode, why not (though that's not one thing I personally care about) and add-ons; though honestly the only Doom 3 mods I can think of are Shambler's Castle and Phobos. But they're both good, so let's go with them if possible. Oh, and Terminal DOOM of course! 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

There definitely are more mods than those, of above average quality, if you skip all the bad ones. Not many, true, but several to take you enough time to truly finish the Doom 3 third-party scene. I don't see DOOM3 ever reviving officially. It just feels like id got burned (unfairly, I say) trying to make a "different" game than their usual action-packed style, so, since DOOM2016, they pretended it never happened. They did make a half-hearted BFG Edition remake, but even that got shifted to generic action-packed mode. It's too bad, because I find DOOM2016 too wacky, repetitive and predictable with its combat and secret hunting formula. DOOM3 had a better progression, because you were supposed to survive a hostile environment with your wits, and anything could happen (with imperfect execution; it was mostly teleporting monsters), and it's pretty obviously just as good with DOOM ][. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

The Flashlight was something pretty much everyone when the game was released, are you telling me that the UAC went to mars, they could teleport people, but they can't put a flashlight to a combat armor or they can't put a flashlight to a shotgun..... Doom 3 BFG got so much hate because people went into snob mode, because the flashlight was not mounted to the armor... All the sudden so much people loved that they had to switch to flashlight, because "it was a core part of the game".... or even worst "ohhh my god they did destroy DOOM and DOOM II no red crosses!!". Quake gameplay is more fitting to those add-ons, Doom 3 not so much. Doom 3 is mostly a single player history driven game and they know it. I rather see a Quake 2 remaster with all those add-on rather than a Doom 3. What i would love that ID would do with Doom 3: A release with 4k textures, bug fixed, the add-ons and something that will make everyone happy..... "OG mode" "BFG mode" You want the old armor and the flashlight?? Here go and have fun. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
