Using Multiple Palettes in the Same WAD

When I create a PLAYPAL file, if I click on Generate Palettes it gives me a total of 14 palettes instead of just the 1. However when I import a .png file and convert it to "Doom Gfx Paletted" it only uses the first one. What are these other palettes used for and can I choose which one of them to index for each textures and sprite? For example is it possible to have one texture use palette[3] and another use palette[7] in the same WAD?
