What's a good MIDI editing software that's compatible with Ubuntu 20.04?

Question

I'm interested in creating my own WADs, and I want to be able to sequence my own MIDIs to companion them. The only problem is that I have a laptop running Ubuntu 20.04 and for whatever reason, I can't seem to get a software synthesizer to work with any editing software, and I don't know if this is a hardware issue, a system issue, or something wrong with the software I'm using. I'm more than willing to provide more information, but I'm rather uneducated on this subject and I'm not sure what would be helpful or not.

Any chance XMMS would work?

For playing the output from the editor? If you can route midi output into it, then probably. I'd have to take a look at it tomorrow.

LMMS is an option you might want to look into, however - make sure your Ubuntu version supports a version of LMMS higher than 1.1.3! Any version at or lower than 1.1.3 can import midis, but can't export them.

That *might* be the problem. I tried exporting from LMMS, but it exported all the tracks as "001 - Grand Piano". If my system can't support LMMS, that's a real shame, but I've been meaning to set up a dual boot with Windows on it, multimedia production on Linux can be a real hassle.

So your version of LMMS can export midis, but doesn't assign the correct instruments? You might either want to ask the LMMS community for support, they probably have a forum. Or maybe you could use another program to fix the instrument assignment, like use LMMS for composing and TuxGuitar for instrument correction?

Update: Don't use TuxGuitar for fixing the instruments - while it seems to save the instruments correctly on my end, it loses some of the midi data from the original file. I think your best bet is to try and solve your issues with LMMS.

Sorry that I can't be much help

I'm using MusE (4.0) for midi editing. It works fine, although you must set the instruments manually with the List editor at the beginning of each track, and also set an "end marker" manually in your tracks otherwise your track will not be looped correctly. (I use Debian 11, but it's very close to Ubuntu 20.04 technically).

(PS: see also this post in another thread for a more general overview of Linux midi editors I used)

As a synth soundfont I use the Timidity GM font (TimGM6mb.sf2) which you can download from the repos (in Debian it's the timgm6mb-soundfont package); the only problem is that it's of better quality than the often-used Windows GM/GS font and thus you may have to adjust instruments to ensure all Doomers have a good experience. In Muse you'll have to load it with the Fluidsynth plugin in the "Midi Ports/Soft Synths" menu. If you're willing to use Muse and have more questions I can help - maybe also with some other Midi editors like Rosegarden or MuseScore although I have less experience with them.

PS: reading the problem with all tracks exported as Grand Piano the issue may simply be that you need to set all MIDI instruments with the List editor, not with the interface your sequencer provides. I don't know if there's a Linux Midi editor which does this automatically.
