sandwedge Posted April 18, 2022 (edited) Hey buddy! Made an unlisted video for this, was gonna release publicly but a few minutes in I was not feeling commentary. Partly me being tired, but honestly partly not feeling the first map. As I explain in the video, it has a lot to do with me not liking Doom 1 as much. With everything it's missing I think it's pretty hard to make it engaging. There are some classic E1 wads I like but they are usually very tightly designed, while this one was rather sprawling and had lots of gobs of enemies. The second map was immediately refreshing with the SSG and more mid-tier enemies to play with. So while you might get better feedback from someone who's into Doom 1 more, I would say a lot of people are gonna prefer Doom 2 like me. Hope my comments and video are helpful though, I see you put work into such a large map. PS just saw you did the skybox, I really like it! Kuro_mahoh Posted April 18, 2022 @sandwedge I blame myself for the gameplay for the most part, honestly I made the map because someone said I should but I still wanted to put effort into it even if the gameplay wasn't gonna be that great (mainly because I don't usually make maps for doom 1 and less enemies is hard to work with), making maps for doom 1 is harder for me which is why I don't really like making them and with the less enemies it is hard to make it engaging and I end up repeating myself in terms of gameplay which is why I prefer doom II mapping, looking back and watching your video there are stuff that I really feel that I should've done things differently to make it more fun. I'm glad you played it though and shared your thoughts! Next time if I ever make a doom 1 map I'm gonna try some new things but for the meantime I'm still mainly sticking to DOOM II. Also the 1024 map was actually an older map I made like 2 or 3 months ago but I wanted to release it, Originally I was gonna make a mapset were all maps are in a 1024x1024 space... Maybe one day? DOOM II is a lot more fun to map with, more enemies + ssg = more fun 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
sandwedge Posted April 18, 2022 (edited) @Kuro_mahoh yeah I'm not a mapper but I think it could be interesting doing Doom 1 stuff as an exercise just because it does limit you, and sometimes limitations can breed creativity. However I will say I usually like the shorter Doom 1 maps because they tend to get weary after a little while. edit: was watching some of this back and I think the rocket launcher would do wonders for enjoyment, would make it easier but those gobs of squishy guys would be fun to blow up. Also Castlevania music is freakin epic, then again I'm starting to use video game music as my WADs music lol. Also thanks for acknowledging my love for shotgunners!
