Gez Posted April 22, 2022 You can toss it upon the pile with Bathory's "Total Destruction", Blackmayne's "Twilight Of Lear", D.R.I.'s "Hooked", King Diamond's "The Family Ghost", Metallica's "Master of Puppets" and "No Remorse", Slayer's "Behind the Crooked Cross" and "Read Between The Lies", and even Ария's "Это рок" because why not? I believe at this point it has been conclusively demonstrated that E1M1 sounds exactly like every metal song ever. There isn't any metal song out there that doesn't sound like E1M1. In fact, the entire metal genre should be renamed to be called "E1M1 music" from now on. 25 Quote Share this post Link to post
DavitW Posted April 22, 2022 Pedal Point Blues by Charles Mingus is the originator of that riff, unless somebody else knows an earlier example. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

Xaser Posted April 24, 2022 Pfft. Everyone knows that E1M1's music is actually a blatant ripoff of Bobby Prince's "At Doom's Gate." 6 Quote Share this post Link to post

QuaketallicA Posted April 24, 2022 It's not. As a guitarist, I can tell you the way you play this riff is quite different. But I can see the reason why you might think they're similar. Regardless, it's nice to bring some attention to Cryptic Writings. Whenever Megadeth comes up, it's always Rust in Peace or Peace Sells, maybe Countdown to Extinction. (and those are rightfully brilliant) Cryptic Writings though is one of my personal favorites that I feel may be a bit underrated compared to their other records. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Behind the Crooked Cross riff is actually in the game though as E3M3/E4M3 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

7Mahonin Posted April 24, 2022 (edited) IIRC, it has been confirmed that Metallica’s No Remorse was the actual song used for inspiration by Bobby Prince, despite this riff being very common in several songs. Honestly, I have never understood when people say it sounds like Master of Puppets… I don’t hear it at all there. There’s tons of other songs like one from Aria but I highly doubt anyone at Id was listening to bands that are fairly obscure in the US, especially obscure in the 90s. This is an old debate, and it sounds close to both, but I think to me it sounds closer to the intro riff of Master of Puppets. Doom's Gate just stops midway, whereas MoP goes all the way down the chromatic scale. This is what most people think of since it's the beginning of the song, and it's closer to MoP. The part that sounds like the No Remorse chorus riff happens later in At Doom's Gate, around 1:10 or so into the song. After it's looped through once, the second time it does a harmony version of the riff, and that harmonized part sounds more like No Remorse. Really, both are correct in sounding like E1M1...just one sounds more like it at different parts of the song. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

No it was not. Bobby Prince himself has explained that E1M1 was not inspired by any specific song. He came up with the riff while "goofing around on the guitar" (source). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
